Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: ET Date: 22 May 06 - 04:39 AM The Sun is a good pub but seems jinxed for real music. Tuesday night is a good do in Monks but again occasionally in competition with the junkbox. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: stallion Date: 22 May 06 - 12:06 PM I recall a story told by Martin, the Wilsons were at Cleethorpes festival and looking for a pub to sing in, they picked the roughset fishermans pub and parked the biggest one of them on the juke box, no one put money in it! |

Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 24 May 06 - 11:15 AM No problems with background music on a Sunday - there would be a riot as the pub is full of sessioneers and the audience. This Sunday in the sun is hosted by Mississippi John R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: ossonflags Date: 24 May 06 - 02:05 PM Can I come? |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 24 May 06 - 03:13 PM Yes, as long as you tell me where we are playing on Saturday!! R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Graham and Jo Date: 26 May 06 - 02:16 PM It looks like the Sun is moving towards heavy metal but says the folk is welcome and hope the two can co exist. It's not working well some Fridays as Black Sabbath isn't getting the kind of atmosphere that's comfortable at the start of sessions. There have been evenings when a good session gets going and the music is turned down, but there is a clash and the folk isn't winning. The Sun is the best place for a session and snap decisions are a mistake so we are hanging on with Fridays for the time being. We're going to lend them a moving hearts CD which appeals to heavier tastes but won't clash. The session needs planty of support. Lets stay lively on a Friday night and persuade them to leave Thin Lizzy on the shelf. Lovers of songs can enjoy the odd stretch of tunes and musicians can enjoy occasional songs and we can get what's most important which is a good folkkey thing on a Friday night in Beverley. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: GUEST,Guest Date: 27 May 06 - 02:44 AM How did the session go last night? Did Thin Lizzy get left on the shelf? Do you think the people that go in there do so to listen to the music, I know I did. The landlady ( i think she is the landlady ) was of the opinion people who went in on a Friday did so because they had picked up the reputation of the pub!!! some reputation I say, A meeting of Hells Angels no doubt will lift beer sales and eh the pub has been saved by these fantastic sellers of ales. I really do hope the musos win the battle of the bands and I hope it happens soon. If the session went well please post which personnel stood behind the bar. If it went well I assume the blonde "landlady" was in attendance, are the four people some sort of syndicate or just family ? Chalk and cheese I say. I will not return out of principle and will drink where I feel wanted which at the minute is at the monks with the delightful taste of the wold top brewery although I do miss Timmy Taylors when I do so |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 27 May 06 - 05:11 AM There is a poster in the window at the moment describing the pub as the only Rock venue in Beverley. We could do with some posters up advertising the acoustic sessions too R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Carol Date: 28 May 06 - 03:55 PM Just got back from a really great session - only complaint was that the regulars were getting a bit loud, stil what can you do about that? C'est La Vie - well Maggie sang a french song go I'm having a go! |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Graham and Jo Date: 31 May 06 - 07:43 PM Last Friday's session was good but started late. There was music at the bar but once going it didn't bother us. Only one barstaff there and she didn't know how to operate the cd system which was left on a loop. We understand there is a holding company looking after the Sun and they have employed managers, but the main lady isn't blonde. This Friday should be a lively one, Stevie is over from Leeds. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: ossonflags Date: 01 Jun 06 - 01:52 AM Did not have a problem with the piped music this Sunday in fact I was asked by the bar staff when we wanted it turned of.Can't do much about noisy regulars I am afraid Carol, after all they are the regulars we the visitors. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 01 Jun 06 - 11:39 AM Bank holiday Sundays are often a bit more noisey than usual. R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: ossonflags Date: 02 Jun 06 - 02:40 AM They are Rog but I thought this week was ok especially when the Beverley Beauty Cabal arrived. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Graham and Jo Date: 03 Jun 06 - 11:02 AM Excellent session last night despite loud unfriendly music from the bar. Nice mix of tunes and songs. Everyone in the pub except one grumpy kid said they'd prefer to hear the session and the worst thing is listening to two things at once. If background noise gets to you the trick is to come early and sit in the snug away from the door. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 04 Jun 06 - 03:45 AM Barring a miracle I won't make it to the Monk's today - tore a muscle in my back on Friday and am struggling to stand or sit with any comfort. I'm in a bad way as I was due to see the rheumatology specialist at Hull Royal about my arthritic hand next Tuesday - the hospital has now cancelled the gig, with no date for a re-booking. R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Graham and Jo Date: 04 Jun 06 - 04:38 PM Sorry to hear you are poorly Roger. Get well soon. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: ossonflags Date: 05 Jun 06 - 03:39 AM You was sorely missed Rog, hope to see you well very soon. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: GUEST,ET Date: 05 Jun 06 - 07:03 AM Hi Roger Sorry to hear of your woes. You may not make it to Monks Tuesday night? If you can and you want a lift let me know via mudcat or e-mail. WIll be a bit thin on the ground anyway I fear as Graham (whistle) is away. Tom is back I think though. Get well soon. Cheers ET |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 05 Jun 06 - 07:39 AM Still suffering today (although at work). I'm hoping to make the Tuesday session but may not be up to carrying the instruments down there - ET a lift would be much appreciated. R |

Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 08 Jun 06 - 03:33 PM In our local free paper tonight (Thursday) The sun has an ad that mentions "folk nights every other Sunday". No listing for Fridays! R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Graham and Jo Date: 08 Jun 06 - 05:14 PM Last week's was good despite the problem. Session on this Friday anyway. We'll see what happens. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: warpy Date: 08 Jun 06 - 08:09 PM Haven't been for ages sorry to hear you are having problems the answer is to arrange a big session night and play mainly tunes and drown out the juke box. Will drag out some of the Hessle mummys and talented kids and mob the place for you Jo. School holidays are the best time. The black boy session has gone so well with the punters that the pub is often full.Prior to the session starting Alan usually only had a few regulars in.He has also just decided to take out the juke box. The man is a hero. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: GUEST Date: 09 Jun 06 - 11:52 AM It isn't the juke box. It's a loop of CDs that they deliberately play behind the bar. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 12 Jun 06 - 03:46 AM Great atmosphere yesterday at the Sunday session with very positive comments from the landlady. R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: danensis Date: 12 Jun 06 - 04:38 PM I'm under the impression that piped music in pubs is for the benefit of the staff, who might get bored serving drinks and talking to customers. The punters go there to talk to each other, play music or listen to it, and the musak doesn't help any of those. Perhaps they should put the speakers under the bar so only the bar staff can hear them? Unfortunately Tim has his school play on Friday night, so we won't get to Beverley until Saturday. Where's the best place to meet up with 'catters? |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Les from Hull Date: 12 Jun 06 - 05:56 PM Monk's Walk, the Sun, or the Tiger. The Tiger is a tune session, the other two will be singing (mainly). They're all quite close to each other so you could easily do all three! |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: ossonflags Date: 13 Jun 06 - 11:34 AM It is "Hodgesons! on the Friday hosted by the fragrent Maggie and the windswept and intresting Les Fromull. |

Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 23 Jun 06 - 11:25 AM For those who are not all folked out after the festival, our regular Sunday session/singaround this week is in The Sun and is hosted by Mississippi John from 4pm (not by me as erroneously posted in another thread) R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Graham and Jo Date: 24 Jun 06 - 07:47 AM Good session last night (Friday). Plenty of tunes at the start, good songs we hadn't heard before at the end including punk rock. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 24 Jun 06 - 11:03 AM I've done bit of that myself - well, The clash anyway! R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: oombanjo Date: 25 Jun 06 - 03:31 AM it a bit late to put this up , but up it goes anyway . Diane the landlady has requested that we have a meeting with her Sunday 25/6/06 will all interested parties come along, this is not only the Sunday sessions but all combined. 3.30 ish. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Les from Hull Date: 25 Jun 06 - 08:41 AM Sorry, but won't be there. Maggie is away on a course and I understand there is some sort of fottballing contest on. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Graham and Jo Date: 25 Jun 06 - 03:59 PM Sorry John couldn't make it. Too much work on the allotment etc. (See that they won 1-0). See you soon. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Carol Date: 25 Jun 06 - 04:07 PM Sorry John Only just got back form 4 Fools this evening |

Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: GUEST Date: 27 Jun 06 - 01:11 PM Did anyone attend said meeting at the Sun? |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 27 Jun 06 - 01:32 PM Yes, but the landlady asked to respect confidentiality on what she had to say - sorry R |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Graham and Jo Date: 28 Jun 06 - 06:42 PM We went to the Sun today and there is nothing to affect the Friday sessions. Session on as usual Friday. |
Subject: RE: Beverley Sessions 2006 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 29 Jun 06 - 10:31 AM Did anyone find my pub prop still attached to the table after I had gone last Sunday? Can't find it anywhere and that is the only place I can think left to look - perhaps I'll head down there now and ask in the pub just in case it was picked up by the cleaners. Oh, and I might have a pint of Landlord whilst I'm there! R |
