Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Sean MacRuaraidh Date: 04 Mar 99 - 07:02 AM Helge, I am not Norwegian but used to have a few friend in Bergen and visited several years ago. I was impressed to find 3 spanking new Irish bars and a reasonable atmosphere in them though you know the prices are higher than in the UK. Unfortunately I have lost touch with my friend. I was also surprised to find two girls speaking with strong Northern Ireland accents though it turns out they were Norwegian and had been au-pairs in N.Ireland for a year. It is amazing how well they picked the accent up. I also play guitar, though poorly, and sing Irish/Scottish folk songs. I am a fan of Pentangle but am not fond of listening to John Renbourn/Bert Jansch on their own. I am living in Scotland at the moment though hopefully not for long as I plan to move to Wales. I come from N.Ireland originally. It would be nice if you could write a bit about what music Norwegians and play and the instruments that they use. My friend used to sing me a Norwegian fishing song and it was really sweet but I don't know the words or music ! Sorry for not being Norwegian. See you, Sean MacRuaraidh |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Date: 04 Mar 99 - 08:21 AM Hi Helge I'm Norwegian and currently living in Bergen (would South-West of Norway be Stavanger btw?). I've been interested in Celtic folk music for almost a decade (I'm 27 now), and lived in Scotland for one year while studying my MSc. Have also travelled a bit around the UK and Ireland, so my English accent is quite a mess. H†vard |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: hank Date: 04 Mar 99 - 08:38 AM I'm German (well, my ancesters came from Germany, now that land belongs to Poland, aren't Wars fun?) but I come from Minnesota, which has the distenction of many small towns settled half Swedish, half Norwegian. If you can imangine the resutls of turning 18 before cars in a town where the only Guy (or girl for guys) is the other nationality. The only thin Sweeds and norwegians around here agree on is that we should build a fench around Iowa and open a zoo. Otherwise they disagree out of habbit no matter how reasonable the other position is. At least it is a peaceful arguement, but even still these fights have defined the Minnesota culture. I know there is Norwegian music, learn some and try it. Irish/Scottish music is beatiful, but it also the fad now. Fad music no matter how good tends to get over exposed, and leaves the danger that we can lose some tarditional music that isn't fad. |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Helge Date: 04 Mar 99 - 12:53 PM Yes, south-west is near Stavanger, approx. 8km north.Your navigations is quiet good H†vard. Hi Sean! I feel the time is very pop. listening to folkmusic, as it used to be 30 yrs ago. Nowadays musicans use a lot more instruments like acoustic bass, mandolin, bozouki, banjo and guitars. I`ve heard there is going to be a gathering conserning the 30th anniversity of the Stavanger Vise og Lyrikklubb. I was a member there in younger days. Three yrs. ago me and two friends played in a club in Stavanger and I called us Triangel ( just for joke) since most of the music came from the Pentangel. Have a nice day !!! Helge |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: H†vard Date: 05 Mar 99 - 03:03 AM Hi Helge Do you by any chance know a folk singer named Johnny Silvo, who (I believe) still lives and performes in Stavanger. He's probably Afro-American by origin, and is justly described as brass-lunged H†vard |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Helge Date: 05 Mar 99 - 06:48 PM Hi H†vard 1 I`ve heard him on a few sets some years ago and I know he is still performing. The last thing I heard about him was him playing in "Maria Logen" I believe his wife is a member/sister there. Helge |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Asle (inactive) Date: 10 Mar 99 - 06:33 AM Another Norwegian here. 25 years old, play the guitar though not well. Currently living in Bergen. |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Camilla Date: 25 Apr 99 - 10:20 PM I'm Norwegian as well. I'm 21 years old, come from Haugesund, but currently living in Bergen. I like Irish traditional music (have been to Ireland a couple of times) and I sing a bit. |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Frank of Toledo Date: 25 Apr 99 - 10:34 PM I'm English & Irish. I spent some time in Tromso back in the late 50's. Just recently received a new Tom Russell CD called 'THE MAN FROM GOD KNOWS WHERE', there is a lot of Norwegian Hardanger fiddle and key harp music by Annbjorg Lien and some marvelous singing by Sondre Bratland and Kari Bremmes. I wonder if this album is being played in your country? It is sub-titled An Immigrant Song Cycle, all written by Tom Russell and following his ancestors' travels from Norway and Ireland to this country. Also includes Irish Uilleann Pipes by Eoin O'Riabhaigh. as well as some great vocals by Dolores Keane and Iris Dement. Quite a Cd. et me know if you've heard it. Good to know you. |

Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Håvard Date: 26 Apr 99 - 11:01 AM Hei
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Philippa Date: 26 Apr 99 - 11:55 AM I could understand most of the Norwegian, but probably not if I HEARD rather than read it. I spent two summers in Norway, mostly harvesting jordbaeren (karotten and blumenkohl too). What a beautiful country! Norwegians I met either loved jazz but didn't like folk music or were folk enthusiasts, esp. for the hardangerfele. I was fortunate enough to attend some kappeleichen (spelling??) but otherwise didn't hear much music. Sean MacRuaraidh - I usually live in Derry but I'm currently at the Gaelic college in Skye, so we're neighbours till you go to Wales and I go back to Ireland. |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Rick Fielding Date: 26 Apr 99 - 12:18 PM Hi There Helge. Rick Fielding in Toronto. Wecome aboard the Mudcat. You'll have fun here. Wait til Sandy starts asking you to collect all the Norwegian kid's songs you've ever heard. You'll find quite a few Jansch, and Renbourne fans here. rick |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Lyle Date: 26 Apr 99 - 11:00 PM Helge: Good to have you join! I'm not Norwegian, but my wife is; her dad was born near where you live. He was born in Kvitsoy and raised in Rennesoy, and emegrated to US as a teenager. We went to Norway a few years ago, but didn't have time to hunt up his birthplace; always planned on doing that when we retired. Her dad also played the hardingfele (is that right?) or Hardanger Fiddle, and used to play folk songs from that area that he learned as a boy. Sure wish I had recorded some of them before he died! Again, welcome abord! |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians who know Horpa? From: Philippa Date: 27 Apr 99 - 07:37 AM So can you help me out with 'Horpa', Norwegian version of the two sisters' story?, |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Twilight Date: 27 Apr 99 - 09:58 PM Hei :) Another Norwegian here. Been away for awhile, but I saw this post had come up again so I thought I'd add my name to the list :). I'm 27 and live in Stavanger, (often seen at the Irishman). Er du der på torsdagene, Helge :)??. My family are part English/Scottish/Irish so I've always loved folk music and celtic music, unfortunately I know very few little Norwegian folk, but hopefully living here will remedy that :). I'd love to be part of a Norwegian "Mudstock", that would be fun :)! I'm learning to play the guitar (oh no, not one of them.. :)), so as such I don't have much to contribute with, but like Camilla I love singing. It seems like most of you are in Bergen, so that might be the logical place to get together, but if you need any help Håvard, just send me a message :) Vibeke :) |
Subject: RE: Any Norwegians From: Helge Date: 30 Apr 99 - 01:21 PM Hei Vibeke ! Helge |

Why not pop in if your in the neighbourhood (Rådhus gate 28) There is also a Tuesday session, same place ,in the back room .And another one at Connelly's (formerly O'Mally's) on Monday evenings.
