Foursome Scooch have won the contest to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in May, and they are simply fantastic. Many feel we will have it in the bag.

The group's airline themed tune Flying The Flag (For You) beat five other contenders vying for the chance to represent the UK at Eurovision.

This year's Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Helsinki on 12 May.

The UK has is one of the biggest financial contributors to the contest.

Once again the general public has voted and put the crappest entry up against the best that Eurovision can do.
Why do they EVER expect to win?
Blowed if I know.
What a surprise!

Makes no difference because:-

(a) They were all crap songs
(b) Every other European country is so jealous of us, or hates us so much, they wouldn't vote for our song no matter what.

Waste of time and money entering. They should put the fortune they squander on this circus into something worthwhile - like raising the profile of Folk Music in the UK.

Good grief. Here is the video of the "winning entry" on YouTube.

There've been some pretty terrible entries, but this time I think they've bottomed out. Nul points would be generous.

For contrast here's some more entertaining eurocrap - last year's Finnish winner.

....................................
Every other European country is so jealous of us, or hates us so much, they wouldn't vote for our song no matter what.

So you think the British put in a song that deserves to have no votes as a matter of principle? You may be right. The only reason I can imagine anyone would vote for that Scooch effort would be as a way of registering contempt for the UK.

If that's actually so it'll be good news for anyone who hates the UK.

But I think a song actually needs to be terrible in some memorable kind of way to get the so-bad-it's-good votes. This one fails even on achieving that.

Here's the Eurovision website, with a link to vids of all the songs. I've skimmed through a bunch of them. Some real lemons in there - but the British entry looks like most cringeworthy and seedy of all. If Terry Wogan said this was the best UK entry in years that might be what he was meaning.

The Irish entry is a bit cutesy, but tuneful in its way. There are a few more fiddles and squeezeboxes around among the other entries, as well as a few vampires and such like.

I always think it's a hoot.

Do you people seriously not realize? The British public think that Eurovision is a joke. This is literally. They (and I include myself) just vote for the silliest, entry. I don't think winning the thing has been a serious objective in years.

Of course it's a joke, and that's recognised by a lot of entries.   And It's perfectly possible to be funny and musically and visually interesting at the same time.

But jokes that aren't funny are just a drag, and the British entry is a case in point. Even aside from the lack of any mind of musical or visual interest.

It"s about what you"d expect from a third-rate country that houses its armed forces in broken-down barracks & shabby married-quarters with no heating or hot water, whilst actively trying to PREVENT the cleverest children in its schools from going to university !! Thirty years ago, "Scooch" would have been pelted with eggs and booed off the stage, but alas !! --the rot has well and truly set in !! Bring back songs like " Diggy Loo, Diggy Lay " , that"s what I say !!

And there's some good stuff in there among the rubbish. The winner should be the Bulgarian entry - but it won't be. I was rather surprised to see it made it through the semi-final.

Pity the UK entry didn't have to enter the semi-final, because it would never have made it through, and whatever replaced it, however dire, could hardly fail to be an improvement.

I had thaught we (UK) stood a good chance. On the night we were bad..... but not as bad as the scores indicate!
What was obvious is that the voting bears little resemblance to the song and that Wogan doesn't want to do the show any more, but will as long as he is paid the kind of money he is for it!
All in all an embarasing episode for all!

God, it was a good 'un! The ESC once again did not fail me. The quality of the performers/songs was of an order so low that none would pass the audition for a floorspot at the average folk-club. However the comedy factor of the voting saved the day, Mrs. Fenswoman and I rolled around our sofa with tears of laughter streaming down our faces, sides splitting with mirth, at the hysterically-funny 'political' voting. I think the voting part of the show was so strong comedically that, in future, they should just do away with the time-wasting and, frankly, embarrassing 'songs' part, and just let each country vote for its mates (which is what they do now), and rename the show The European 'Who's Johnny No-Mates?' Contest. We would win that one hands-down every year.

Can't say as I'm surprised... the voting has been more political than a Donuel/Divis Sweeney thread since we allowed any country west of Luxembourg to play.

Oh, and we had Chinese food delivered.. yum!

Well we watched it with awe and horror again. It seems more of a contest to find out who can be the freakiest and most unsettling; nothing to do with good songs, good singing or presentation. Mind you...I DID like last years' winners and they would have taken some living up to.

Not at all surprised that UK got nearly no points...our contribution was dreadful.

BTW...despite the low quality, shouldn't this be in the music section? It is a song competition after all

The winner was actually a pretty good song, in its style, by a very good singer. Give it a listen, preferably a version without the Eurovision night razzamatazz - Here (And here are the lyrics, in Serbian, English and French.)

The UK entry got 19 votes. That was 19 votes too many.

Everyone knows that if Britain wanted to win it, they could every year, we would just get Noel Gallagher, Sting, Elvis Costello, Morrisey, George Micheal, Gary Barlow, Elton John, Eric Clapton etc etc the list is endless etc, to do it for us. i think its best that we allow other countries to be in the running, otherwise it would just be the anglo irish song contest. which would be much better musically, but no where near as naff and laugahble as our european counterparts attempts at credible pop music,,, to prove my theory, the last time Britain put a credible artist in, we won by the highest margin ever.... BS indeed!
And what the hell was Irelands entry? It was billed as traditional but was disappointigly awful.
This is no longer a representation of music, but like has already been said, a freak show and political pals appreciation society. The winners were the ones not taking part!
The best bit of the show is Terry Wogans satirical comments, which for me make it worth watching!

First time I've watched it since Abba won and it didn't fail me, I haven't laughed so hard in years. From the sea of fake tan and spangles, to the consisent and complete lack of musical ability to the genius of Sir Terry's commentary... not to mention the sheer comic poetry of the voting, I was enchanted.

Most of the songs were total crap - the winner this year was an exception; the thing is, the UK isn't the only country that clearly believes in putting forward absolute rubbish, it's just been doing it pretty consistently for longer than most countries, so it even lacks the over-the-top enthusiasm that the Eastern European countries bring to it.

The vote-for-your-neighbours thing is interesting - in the context of the former Yugoslavia it is quite impressive, given recent history in that part of the world. It doesn't always work that way between neighbouring countries with a history of conflict. Not many Polish votes for Germany, for example.

I knew there was some reason that when it comes to current pop music I'd rather go with Alternative Indie instead. Top of my list is Wolf Parade Then again, I've rarely been a fan of mainstream anything.

Watching crap like Scooch and then Wolf Parade is sort of like the difference between seeing the Poppy Family and then the Stones in years gone by.

Yeh, fair play, Katrina was American, but in her own words, the music scene was far more cutting edge in Britain than it was in America, so she defected during the Reagan administration, i believe she escaped in a hot air baloon.

And really, does anyone here truly believe that if Britain took the Eurovision seriously, anyone else would stand a chance????. the best thing about the eurovision is listening to Terry Wogan, anyone remember when he got barred from the host country, he started emulating theyre rhyming commentary with cockney rhyming slang, it was hilarious.
Britain maybe shit at most things, but great inspirational music isnt one of them.

And why did Terry Wogan, an Irishman, keep referring to the UK as 'us'?

"Interessting that our only votes came from Ireland (our neighbour) and Malta which we used to occupy and probably own (Not very clear on the politics here!)"

Strangely Lynne, the voting by Ireland is probably political. If you look back, it has been almost a tradition for the UK to give points to Irish entries, but for no points to be awarded by the Irish to UK entries. The change of mood in Northern Ireland has altered the position vis-a-vis Anglo/Eire relationships.

Malta was not, and is not a British possession, but was of such strategic importance during WWII that britain pulled out all the stops to defend it from invasion.

Initially the RAF force on the island was three obsolete biplanes (Gloster Gladiators i believe), call signed faith, hope, and charity.

These held off the Italian airforce attacks until a squadron or two of Spitfires could fly in.

Malta took a hell of a pounding from enemy bombers which resulted in the whole island being awarded the George Cross, but still seem to be Anglophiles.

Paddy, I think that Terry has lived and worked so long in England that he regards it as home. He may even have accepted naturalisation when it was offered some years back. Certainly the English government who added his name to the honours list, resulting in his knighthood, seem to accept him as "one of ours" .

I think the votes for the UK entry from the Irish viewers might actually not have been that friendly. The only reason I can imagine voting for it would have been as an act ridicule.

"Malta was not, and is not a British possession" It was a British Crown Colony from 1814 until it became independent in 1964, and a republic in 1974. (And of course several of Cyril Tawney' songs are set in Malta.)

Looked like Bud Abbott, but she could sing all right. And she seems to have the right idea of what this contest ought to be about: "'I listen to music - I don't want to watch it, I want to listen to it."

I found that in a story headlined "The worst show in living memory" by a bloke who has written what sounds like a dreadful book about the song contest called Nul Points. (Since he opens by saying "I actually thought Flying the Flag by Scooch was a fine song in the true tradition of Eurovision" you can tell it must be a pretty dreadful book. And he clearly hates the idea that songs as such should have any significance in the event. So he says:

"What depressed me about it was encapsulated quite neatly by the Serbian girl who won. When she said, 'I listen to music - I don't want to watch it, I want to listen to it,' then I thought she'd completely missed the entire point of the Eurovision Song Contest."

What I think is:- the reason Wogan refers to the UK entry as 'us' because he's being paid to do the commentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Britain is 'us' as far as the BBC is concerned, and that's who he's representing.

I didn't see the ESC, but I've seen the Scooch thing. Woefully embarrassing, I thought it was. They ended the song by displaying a couple of Union Flags - I can't believe that anyone would think that triumphantly displaying your own country's flag is a good way to get people from other countries to vote for you, but there you are.

It's just occurred to me why that Scooch song presentatiion looked familiar, with the uniforms and the flags. It looked like an out-take from a Briticised version of "Springtime with Hitler".

Anyone else remember a dire UK sitcom called 'The High Life'? The pilot aired in 1994 and 6 episodes finally escaped in early 1995. It's set on an aeroplane, focuses on the lives of 4 staff members, one of whom is Alan Cumming. I remember it as being as camp as a row of pink tents and whenever I see/hear the Scooch thing, I can't help but think of that programme... the fact it only survived 6 episodes has to be a bit of a giveaway as to how it was recieved - from what I remember, the dialogue was the only good thing about it, but you had to have some understanding of polari and a certain amount of verbal dexterity to get the jokes. The theme song was perhaps the best remembered thing about the programme - with a dance routine that looks not a great deal unlike that of Scooch and his fellow stewards...

Hi Liz. 'Polari'? Didn't the beatniks do away with them by dressing up in those funny duffle coats and yomping around the country? And, I may be wrong here but, didn't they also sing 'polari, oh oh, cantari ho ho ho ho' and go on about some horsey type called Nell Blue de Pinto de Blue? Or am I confusing that with an Italian ESC entry?

The great Wogan has dual nationality because he was born before 1949. He was therefore able to accept a 'proper' knighthood when it was offered whereas Bob Geldof, born after 1949, has an honorary one. 1949 was the year when Ireland left the Commonwealth and became a Republic. Wogan was born a British citizen and apparently has the right to retain this.

Flag: v.i. Hang down, flap loosly; droop, fade, become limp; lag, lose vigour, grow languid; become uninteresting. (Concise Oxford Dictionary.)

Yes, all sounds very much in keeping with that song.

Guest, Paddy says Ireland fought for its independence and Wogan shit on that for a nighthood.

Is the constitution of the Republic really that shaky that it can be upset by a light entertainer accepting a meaningless title from a monarch that you no longer have anything to do with?

Or do have you spelt 'nighthood' that way on purpose? Meaning perhaps that Wogan is a sleeper for the IRA cell used to infiltrate the Royals and 'shit on' is his wake up phrase?

Wow! I knew that the Eurovision was the signal for the start of a revolution in Portugal but I didn't know it still had such deep and hidden significance...

:D

Wogan isn't that light.. have you seen him recently? He's no longer the sleek, lithe, racing snake that he once was... or maybe he's a racing snake that's just eaten an entire goat.
