Yeah... first it's the catnip for "recreational purposes", a quick roll in it, no probs... "I can give it up whenever I want" you say... but one day, the commercial stuff just doesn't cut it... you want fresher, stronger, greener.

Then, before you know it, you've got a 10pack of Whiskas Crunchies a day habit and a bald spot on your forehead. Soon you'll be into the pennyroyal and that's some bad shit man... Don't do it.. Just Say Meo!

Just caught up with this thread... love and hugs Lynne, Ted, Shady and Richard. Not being recognised by Bubblyrat on another thread must be a blow, too...

No, honestly I hope things get better for you soon. You've been working with / in (?) cows for so long that it must be really painful to give up.

Love

Well the cat seems to be getting better, which is the good news. On the other hand, Ted's car went in for MOT today and they can't get the emissions down so it looks as though we are going to be faced with a massive bill for getting it right. Just what you want to hear when you've just been told your job is finishing.

{{{{Lynne}}}} keep your spirits up, laugh at adversity, look at your family and count your blessings. Good things will come, you just need to keep a long breath till they do.

A silly idea, but have you thought of selling shares in your herbs business? It could bring in capital to tide you over, if that's what you need. On the other hand, with more time in your hands now, could you not speed up the herbs business to reap its benefits earlier?

Whatever you do though, our thoughts and best wishes with you!

Thanks again guys. So much caring among Mudcatters....

George You really put into words what I've been thinking. Every time something else hits and I say to myself "How much worse can it get?" I look at my healthy, intelligent kids and my solid family unit and realize that I am really very lucky and that it could be MUCH worse.

I've already started planning how I can put the extra time I will have to good use in the herb business. An amusing note on that....Ted and I went to the bank yesterday to see the business Manager and open a business account. (We'd been using my personal account up till then). We came away not only having opened the account, but having sold the business manager £22 worth of herb stuff!!!

A large dose of RedEx and a blast along a stretch of open road is supposed to work wonders in clearing some of the poop out of an engine. Do make sure they're testing it when it's thoroughly warmed up, and remember you don't have to take it back to the same place for another test.

I have very close friends who have been going through a roller coaster of redundancies over the last few years. I have witnessed the stresses and pressure they have suffered, seemingly from all sides: every time it seemed they were just pulling back and poking their heads above the parapet again, some b*stard shot them down.
However,I've seen them never give up hope, even with rent to find and a 16 year old teenage lad to support in school. They are in their mid fifties, and happily at the moment the husband has just got a good job which my daughter quite accidentally found for him with the company she works for, and he seems to be doing well.

I've been a bit wound up in my own little world this last couple of weeks, and today decided to be less selfish and offer my support to you. It sounds to me like you have the drive and determination to really give this your best shot, and I would like to wish you all the success you deserve. Life's a bitch and really can kick you where it hurts. Time to give life a good kicking back, my girl!!!

Hi Lynne, Ted, Richard and Shady
Sorry to hear your news. Only came upon it by chance today.
Not a lot I can say except that I was made redundant in my 40's, went to college and learned to be an Osteopath.
Things can be done!
Regarding the herbs, I wish you well with whatever marketing strategy you undertake.
I have one idea but need to talk to you direct.
PM me with your phone number and I can call you.
Love, Colyn (and woofs from a couple of dogs)

Hey Lynne; I'm 'sort of' sorry to hear your news, but only 'sort of'. I've been through this particular mill a number of times, and I know how tough it can feel, especially in the immediate aftermath. The 'sort of' comes from my own experience; every time this has happened to me, I learned something, usually good, either about the world or about myself. That learning has usually taken me to places and jobs that were better, not worse than before, although the transition has been painful sometimes. As an example, you are learning right now how many people care about you and your family enough to at least contribute to this thread, and in some cases more besides I guess. I've met you a few times; you strike me as a confident, resourceful, multi-talented and highly intelligent woman. People like you are in very short supply, and I don't think it will be long before the local employers/customers wake up to that fact, and opportunities will start to come along. Don't be tempted to take the first offer if it isn't right; be aware of your own value, and make sure that it's recognised in whatever field you move into.
I hope this helps a bit. By the way, I've done a lot of careers guidance work with adults in my time; pm me if you want a chat at 'mates rates' (i.e. nowt).
Tim

Thanks again everyone. It is almost humbling to see how many people are concerned.

The cat seems to be better so that's one good thing.

Though I am still heartbroken at losing my cows and the loss of the money will come hard, I can see that those extra hours put into the herb buisness will probably give it the boost it needs. I think we are on a winner, we just need to get by until we can start earning decent money at it. Ted's new job, though only 18 hours a week, he's really enjoying, so that's a benefit too.

Colyn, I'll pm you later, I have to go and milk cows in a minute, while they are still there! My boss is continuing until she's told she has to stop, and given the speed at which beauracracy works, it may be some time!

Lynne..... Went through all this at age 60, Mine was only a boring office job though, Cows is people!
Curiously, the last five years of my working career were the most fun I ever had. Get onto an agency and landed various 'trouble shooter' assignements. This meant I could go in somewhere, tell the management what a crap job they had been doing, and they couldn't sack me because they needed me to help sort it out. I really enjoyed myself!
Can't see how you could apply the principal to cows, but maybe you could get yourself seconded to DEFRA. ( MR Milliband, do you actually know what a cow is?)
Hang in there, girl

I can't believe this! Our bad run continues. Last night I got a 'phone call to say my Uncle had died and then today our other cat...not the one we've already spent heaps of vets bills on but her brother, has been hit by a car. He's shattered his jaw which will have to be wired. The rough estimate of the bill so far is over £250.

I just hope when all this ends we get a corresponding run of good luck!

Oh Lynne.... you sure you didn't break a mirror or cross any old crones recently?

On no account must you say 'things can't get worse' because, invariably in the films, that's when the car blows up or the house falls down.

Still, it could be raining!

Take care dear, the offer of a bed here is always open unless it's already occupied by someone else, in which case, you get the sofa!

Liz, I AM the old crone!! And if the bed is occupied, I could always share, depending on who it's occupied by?!

Once again, thanks guys. With family and friends to be thankful for we are still blessed.

The cat was operated on today and had his shattered jaw wired. When we last heard he was not out from under the anaesthetic but the jaw wiring had gone very well and he seemed to be ok. We did keep telling him not to go across the road! We have nothing out the back but fields but the other side of the road has always been more interesting to him. Maybe this will make him think twice in future! I've had two cats before that have been hit by cars and survived, (one of them with the same injuries as this) and both ended up being VERY wary of cars and lived well into their teens

Opened the door to the post lady this morning and received a parcel containing a beautiful, delicate, brown shawl from Maine...a Mudcat hug. It made me cry but made me feel oh so much better. Thank you Jacqui....you are a pearl. These things have magic in them and I believe this will be the turning point in our fortunes.

How glad I am that one of the pivotal points in my life was going to a local folk club which had just started up. From that beginning I have made the best friends of my life

From: GUEST,Texas Guest

MBSLynne: well, I cannot be there to sing it for you but here are some of the lyrics to a tune called "One More Ride," that is on my first CD. A few years back a lady came up to me in tears after my set
and told a story of trying to open her own store and after years of
trying and trying and not giving up despite the obstacles she faced - she now had her own business. Keep your chin and your faith up and hang in there. The whole song's a bit longer, but here's a verse, the chorus and the bridge -

Well our train's pulled out of the station
Now we're rollin down the track
We may be bound for heaven or hell
But there ain't no turnin back
This ain't no young and wide-eyed innocent ride
This here's an old familiar rail
Though the names and the faces of our stories are different
It's still the same old tale /

We're takin one more ride / givin it one more try
You leave your baggage with the pullman and follow your heart
We're gonna make this damned train fly
We're takin one more ride / givin it all we got
We got a signal to roll from the gandydancer
Keepin the engine hot / we're takin one more ride

Some people abandon their dreams when they fail
"Settle for less, before it's too late"
"But if it's in your heart" said a wise old man,
"You fall seven time - you gotta get up eight"

We're takin one more ride, etc.

Hang in there, friend. Cheers.

On Wednesday the first three cows went off to a sale. Bluebell went into another herd, Freddie (whose real name is Elly-May) also went into a herd to up the butterfat. Bella, who was one of my favourites, a lovely quiet, placid cow, went to a smallholding where she will be suckling calves and hand milked for the house. I was really glad about that cos she will be loved. Even better, the man who bought her was so pleased with her temperament, he has rung to ask if there are any others, so with any luck one or two of the remaining ones may go there too.

Well I'm still milking the cows, so that's a good thing. However today we had a double sadness. Carillion, who had just calved, died this afternoon, and Blossom, who was old and suffering from abscesses in her udder, went to the big cowshed in the sky. Carillion was one of the two who were going to be kept. She was a lovely cow. The good side of this is that they are now probably going to keep Molly instead and she is my favourite.

Otherwise, things aren't so bad. Our trays of herbs are in a farm shop, a village shop and a greengrocers and all sorts of possibilities are turning up. Both the cats are fine, well and happy. Hopefully we are now on the way up!

Sorry to hear about Carillion and Blossom, though. Puir things...good though they will keep Molly. Lovely things, aren't they? The place where I grew up ahd an old milking shed. The cows' names were still above each station, written in hand on cardboard. I used to love going in there and reading the names.

Other farms I've worked on, the cows had numbers, though some would obtain a name due to being some sort of character. Because these are show cows and such a small herd, they all have names. Each year's calves have names starting with a different letter and I have helped name some of them. As well as the three mentioned, we also still have Sister Dominique, Amy, Delilah, Ceanothus and Gloria. There are also three years worth of heifers, the oldest in calf but not yet calved.

The web site is http://www.witchsgarden.co.uk It's not totally complete yet but I hope worth a look. We've just done our first two mail orders of herbs. Kind of experimenting as both were to friends and relations. The postage cost was quite steep as we did next day delivery...£10 for 14 herb plants. Of course we can only post them within England though. And thanks for the continued good wishes and thoughts everyone

Hmmm...the problem there though, is you seem to have to take the parcel to their depot which for us would be Manchester or Leeds. It would cost us as much in petrol as anything we saved or more.

Btw...pressed a wrong key. Postage was £20 for 14 plants, not £10

I thought that those of you who have supported and sympathized might like to know that I am no longer losing my job! My boss has decided after all to go ahead and is now building the herd up again. We are milking five at the moment but we have three heifers to calve in the next couple of months and instead of being sold they will come into the herd. So my job is safe and so are the rest of my lovely cows!
