I only discovered Tim O'brien this year and the more I listen to him , the more I think he's one of the best around - his musicianship , song-writing and wonderful voice are superb. Whatever style he's playing
it's always superbly arranged . In fact i wish I was him!!

Larkin

Your point is unclear. Maybe it's a Brit thing. It sounds to me as though you don't like him very much. I'm not sure why not. The man is tremendous as a picker, singer, arranger and writer. But each to his own.

Peter.

Glad I checked. If anyone called me the "dog's b*ll*x" I would have thought it would call for sabers at dawn.

Peter.

Must be sort of like the current US slang expression "the shit". To say something is "the shit" is extremeley complimentary, but to say it's "shit" without the "the" is a different matter.

Of course if you said his songs were a load of bollocks it'd be entirely different.

You get the same kind of ambiguity with "bomb", according to exactly how its phrased. And to say you were "chuffed" about something is competely confusing, because it can equally mean you like it a lot or you dislike it a lot, even when phrased identically.

To make a dogs boll**** out of something here in Ireland means , you really fuc*** up , made a bags of the job , but then again the word wicket now means great, and not like before when it ment wild-dog

I'm surprised to hear that, McGrath. Although I'm English, I only knew the meaning of "chuffed" as "pleased" or similar. I've heard and used "dischuffed" to mean the opposite. Is it a regional thing, this difference in meaning?

two of hismost recent c.d.'s were Fiddler's Green and Cornbread Nation

i see he is appearing with a group which gtoes by the name of Corn
bread Nation now.

thehot rize group is a hoot....(that is a good advjective, too)
they take on a whole new personality and wear different clothes
and sing a different style (western/swing/cowboy)

i am glad that the term was defined, because I, too, thought
that this was a criticism of him.

i can[t find any web sites right now, but he is not to be confused with another by that same name who is an author. Tim and his sister
Molly are great musicians and they have both toured internationally and his collection of songs celebrating his Irish roots, The Crossing
is a great c.d.. I featured it on my st. Pat's radio show.

try to google Tim O'Brien (capitol O and capitol B) or The Crossing
or look here www.timobrien.net

'The Dog's Bollocks' is something to be proud of, and dogs are supposed to be very fond of them. They do lick them tenderly.

I've never heard 'chuffed' to mean anything but pleased. A chuff is slang for a ventral orifice. "Up your chuff, matey!"

There's an Irish-style pub here in Auckland called the Dog's Bollix. It hosts a lot of folk music.
