Now that the "Little known 1960's Folk Singers" seems to have wound down, let's move ahead to the next decade.

Some Canadian names I remember from the 1970's in Canada: Jesse Winchester, Stan Rogers, Stringband, Raffi (before he became a star in kids music), Original Sloth Band, Pied Pumkin, Valdy, Stan Rogers, Ryan's Fancy, John Allen Cameron, Paul Hann, Doug McArthur, Willie P. Bennett, David Essig, Friends of Fiddler's Green, David Wiffen, Murray McLauchlan.

I love Paul Geremia.

We've got a record by a guy named Bob White (self-released, I think, or very nearly) that's a really good record, but I can't find anything else about him. Too bad, really. My parents saw him in Ann Arbor in the mid-late 1970's but apparently he didn't stay in the music business.

Bob White was playing in the Boston area in 1969/70. I vaguely remember having heard of him once or twice since, but can't recall any details. Fine trad singer, though -- Tom

are you really sure, that Don (Partridge) has been a little known 1970's folk singer? He made rank # 4 (!!) in british charts (Rosie) in 1968 (!!) and has had a smaller follow-up hit.

Perhaps he became lesser known in the 70's. But he was once well-known/ famous in Europe.

There was a folk singer in 'the '70s in Toronto who just went by the name of Kathlen. She was married for a while to the guy who ran Bacca, the science fiction bookstore on Queen Street.

Anybody remember her? Anybody know what became of her?

Don spent most of the seventies in Sweden and up and down the busking trail throughout Europe. Without wanting to get into another of those "hat is folk?" debates, I would say that he became very much the epitome of the true folk singer at that time. I know of his follow ups to "Rosie" ("Blue Eyes" and "Breakfast on Pluto"). However, if you talk to Don about that, he only regards it as a very small part of his life. As far as he (and I as it happens) see it, his really important work was done as a street entertainer. He was truly a master of that, although relatively few people are aware of how very good he was.

Hi,
I really don't want to moan about this interesting thread.
But wouldn't it be more concrete to separate this thread to a british and to an american one? Some folk singers have been well-known in the UK on the one hand but little known in the US on the other (and vv). Because there's not always transparency as to find out where 'Catters do come from this separation would help to avoid misunderstandings.

Rubbish to make this proposal???

The unfinished Stetson my mother got at the 1965 Girl Scout jamboree-thing is surely folk. Started out as a respectable hat and now looks like the Confederate that lost the war. It's definitely not what Stagolee was fighting about.

but in case an interested 'Catter doesn't know from which country mentions of personally unknown artists do come from there's little informative content.(little known = most people didn't/don't know this person).
Would be a help when corresponding info is added.

I'm still mulling over the concept of singers such as Stan Rogers and Gordon Bok being considered "little known." Little known compared to whom?

Anyway I nominate Joel Mabus and Sally Rogers who were both based in Michigan in the 1970's. The Lost World String Band, Stan Werbin and other denizens of Elderly Instruments, deserves honorable mention. Kitty Donohue, perhaps best known for her song "Farmers in Florida." Lady of the Lake with my old friend Karrie Potter which recorded "Shafted in Shaftsburg." Second Opinion, Sally Potter's fine trio. Cathy Fink and Marcie Marxer were also based in Michigan at this time. And all the members of the Pretty Shaky Stringband.

Eclectricity from Bloomington, Indiana, put out two great recordings including the track "Country Music Sucks."

Cathy Fink and Marcie Marxer were also based in Michigan at this time.

Cathy and Marcy only met each other in 1980. They began working together in 1984.

In the 1970s, Cathy lived in Canada. First in Montreal and then in Winnipeg.

Marcy Marxer is FROM Michigan so she probably was around in the 70s. Don't know about Cathy's whereabouts. Have you noticed that a lot of our Little-known folk singers of the 1970s also made the Little-known folks singers of the 1960s list. I think if you're little-known in two decades then maybe you're not so little-known. Several of these folks would qualify as little-known folk singers of the 2000s, too. In my book, that makes them famous.

As I recall Marcy Marxer may have met Cathy Fink when she was playing with Karrie Potter in another great group called the Bosum Buddies. That group also included master old-time fiddler Sue Hammond and unless I'm wrong I'm thinking that Cathy Fink was the 4th member of that band. I'll have to access some old files!

Nope, Cathy Fink wasn't a member of Bosom Buddies. Melonie, a banjo player, was the 4th member. However, when the Buddies were performing one summer at Owen Sound Folk Festival they did meet up with Cathy Fink who was also performing there, according to the pictures I took that year.

Owen Sound/Toronto, 1980 would have been about right. I left Michigan to return to Maine in August of 1982.
