If anyone's interested you can hear Garrison Keeler on BBC7 on Saturdays at 5.00 pm, 11.00pm as well as on Sunday morning at 6.00 am. In my opinion it's a great mixture of humour & interesting music.

Garrison Keilor is a gasbag. On Prarie Home Companion you have to suffer through an hour of crud to hear two or three songs. If you are unlucky, Keilor will even attempt to sing (cringe). At the very worst, he will insist on singing with a tallented guest, adding insult to injury.

In defense of GK he does present some of the best talent in the country. I heard everyone from Renee Fleming to Ry Cooder on his show. He was smart enough not to sing with Renee Fleming.

Andy Stein is one of the top jazz fiddlers in the country. Pat Donahue is a genius on that guitar (though I wish he wouldn't use a pickup on his acoustic). Howard Levy has played on his show and he is the end-all diatonic harp virtuoso. Butch Thompson is a fine pianist.

GK I think got a lot of his performance persona from Lee Hays. Maybe Will Rogers too.

His humor is funny. I agree that his enthusiasm for singing is carried a little too far.

But I can think of all the wonderful talent that he has presented and I don't know any show on NPR that had such an array.

Frank

Any time something happens that might threaten to get me feeling anti-American I know that a few minutes listening to, or reading, Garrison Keillor (note spelling), and the feeling will go away.

He's been on BBC7 for ages now... he used to be on Saturdays at 12.00midday, repeated on Sundays at 6.00am. They recently jiggered about with the schedules so I'm not sure when he'll be repeated now.

Crud is in the eye of the beholder.
