I have spoken to his wife and Ronnie's finished his chaemotherapy. He was in hospital after a fall but he's recovering from that as well.

As I have stated before - BE BOLD and fix these things. Wikipedia is better than nothing and can be a very good resource. it's not perfect but recent articles in major newspapers have documented the communities ability to stay more current than major news networks.

Trust *nothing* on Wikipedia unless you can verify it. *Nothing.* You'd be surprised at the number of "people" who think it's a riot to mess with the articles. Though they do their best, those who monitor the problem have a very hard time correcting the work of the vandals.

Sad but true.

Vandals do put crap like this on wikipedia, but it is just as easy to take it down. If you see an unsourced announcement of death - fix it. Yiyu can also semi-protect a page to make sure that accounts not older than 3 days cannot edit it.

The story I read somewhere about W.C.Fields (a life long Atheist) was that a friend found him leafing through the Bible.
When asked what he was doing, he replied, "I'm looking for a loophole."
Now you've got to imagine just how he would have said that to get the full picture!

Just checked Wikipedia again. The page has been modified as of this afternoon and no longer reports Mr.Drew's passing. We, in this household, are clinging to the possibilities that it was a total error and are fervant in sending all positive thoughts and energies to himself and his family.

There is a similar type story about WC Fields on his death bed. He was looking back on his life and saying how sorry he was about his dislike of children and dogs. He said he felt terrible for having spoken badly of them in the course of his life. He asked for forgiveness, and then his head slumped back and his eyes closed. As his friend (Barrymore) was leaving the room, Fields is said to have raised himself to his elbows and exclaimed, "On second thought, fuck 'em!" THEN he died.

Rumours of Ronnie's demise are grossly exaggerated, there is life in the ould dog yet.

Then Micky Maloney ducked his head
When a bottle of whiskey flew at him,
It missed, and landed on the bed
And the whiskey scattered all over Tim!
Bedad! he revives! See how he raises!
Tim Finnigan rising in the bed,
Says,"Whirl your whiskey 'round like blazes
Be the tundering jasus! Do you thunk I'm dead?"

Whack fol de da, now dance with your partner
Round the floor your trotters shake
Isn't it the truth I told ye,
Lots of fun at Finnegan's wake.

Good on ye Ronnie boy.

You could well be right meself. Most of these sayings tend to be attributed to Wilde. It was a Wilde guess on my part.

I think I was confusing it with Wilde's statement that he had nothing to declare but his genius.

Wikipedia can be unreliable, yes. What tends to keep it in the main reliable is that not only can anyone add anything to a page, but also anyone can remove or correct something. Overall that tends to keep the information correct, but it can't ever really be taken as truth unless there are external articles cited within that support it.

I am relieved to hear that there's been nothing in the Irish news, though. I wouldn't expect it to be big news here in the US because he's not nearly as well known here, but I would expect it to be big news across the pond. And I figured that if anyone might be likely to know, it'd be the Mudcatters. That it hasn't been in the news there makes me think that it's a lot less likely to be true. I'd think not at all true except for the above-suggested possibility that it is being kept quiet until after the funeral, but if that's the case it'll be out after.

[and I have to say, what a wonderful and refreshing thought that is - that the media would consent to putting the family's interests above their own even for a short period of time. I cannot imagine the US media doing the same, no matter how beloved or respected the person involved. The US media can pretty well be counted upon to make a circus out of anything and everything that has to do with any public figure, unfortunately.]

Whatever Ronnie's wishes Dublin is too small a place to keep something like this a secret for long.

I imagine that if Ronnie is in good enough health (and I hope he is) that he will get enormous enjoyment out of the fact that as Oscar Wilde once said "the reports of his death have been greatly exagerated".

Just went to the shops and none of the papers have anything, nor has anything been on the news, like Declan mentioned. The only other possibility I can think of is that Mr.Drew, himself, requested that there not be a "circus" in the event of his passing.

Yes, that's why I was curious. Considering that he has been battling cancer it's certainly plausible, but because anyone can post to Wikipedia without any sort of verification, it can't be relied on. And it seems odd that no news service has picked up the story, seems like they would've had enough time to have published it (even if only online) by now.

I was randomly surfing around Wikipedia today, and found myself on Ronnie Drew's page - and I was rather shocked to find that it had just been updated today, to say that he had passed away yesterday.

Link to Wikipedia page

Of course, being Wikipedia, it could very well be wrong too. I can't seem to find any other mentions anywhere else online of his passing though - surely that would at least be newsworthy in the UK if not in the US?

I hope it's not true... :(
