my sister said my father used to sing this all the time..something about a goat. Any more verses..she gave me one..holes in his britches as big as new york..I swear I never heard him sing anything other than McNamara's Band and Jim O'Shea was cast away, although he said his father was a great singer. mg

I had this sudden flash:

Oh, do you remember sweet Paddy from Cork,
Who crossed the wide prairie with his cousin Mork . . .

It's been a long day.

Not having any luck so far, either. I may be in the Traditional Music Archive in Dublin over the next week or so and will try there.

WorldCat lists a song called PADDY FROM CORK (THE BLARNEY SONG) by Cora B Ahrens, from 1911.

All these lovely letters about the song 'Paddy from Cork'were written in 2007 and here it is 2011 and I am looking for the words to that very song. My Dad used to sing it at Easter when we children were hunting for eggs and if we got close to a hidden one he would sing the song very loud and if we were not close to finding one he would sing it very softly...it went like this: "Paddy from Cork had never been...a railroad car he'd never seen, " ..... BUT BEYOND THAT I CAN'T REMEMBER .......DOES ANYONE KNOW IT????

Here's a bit for you:

Paddy from Cork has never been
Never a railway train has seen
Never has seen the great machine
That runs on the iron railway.
(Alice Kane: Songs and Sayings of an Ulster Childhood page74 - edited by Edith Fowke)

Other bits are in Lady Gomme's book about Children's Games (vol. 2 p. 36); David Holbrook's Children's Games p. 117 and elsewhere. Edith Fowke only knew of one North American report, collected by Leonora Pauls from Arthur Rowe of Edmonton in 1981 but I have no idea where that version ended up.
