Sorry Growler, I missed the thread going up, I didn't get to check the web with waves of visitors staying over the weekend on the way to our National Folk Festival here over Easter. One lot had their mobile home dumped on my front lawn by a tow-truck.

We are seriously funny, and the idea is for everyone to have a bloody good sing, and get thirsty. Til falling over, as you say, we will no doubt get through chunks of our non-Shiny Bum folk repertoire as well, and every one else's. We want to hear you too.

Can't wait,
Chris

Sorry, finger slipped. Just to add some detail, it will be a singaround, hosted by the shirt murderer and myself, otherwise known as the oldest, up and coming boy band in Kent, (Rough and Ready ), anything goes, with an extended floor spot for The Shiny Bums, ( for as long as they want ), plenty of real ale on sale and food thrown in. Should be a bloody good session

My imagination is running riot on TDL.

We have learnt to be afraid here too after some encounters at our National Folk Festival over Easter, including John Thompson of Cloudstreet in a nun's habit hitting a falsetto high C on Climb Every Mountain.

hi jo-jo, from the look of your message, you'll be belting out the choruses like a good'un - look forward to seeing you there!

John Thompson's a mate of mine so I'm not surprised regarding the High C - but a nun's habit?? A nun with that beard - the mind boggles. What did Nicole have to say? Come to think of it she would have joined in. They're wonderful people and such great singers and musicians. You're lucky people over there that's sure.

Richard - Good grief, is this a record for requests to come in six weeks before the gig? Happy to oblige when we get past the Shiny Bum stuff. Any others? Tell us, and we'll come prepared.

Cloudstreet and the Shiny Bum touring party were on at our Old Canberra Inn on Wednesday night, at the 'Who still has a voice two days after the Festival?' show. Unfortunately we didn't get a reprise of Climb Every Mountain from John - for which for the record Nicole was pointedly absent. He must have dropped the habit. (No! That's an even more appaliing prospect - don't anyone dare suggest it to him, he'd be desperate enough to do it).

Also for the record, the Sound of Music competition was won by Canberra's very own and brilliant John Shortis and Moya Simpson, with how the movie and script might have changed if Marlene Dietrich had got the lead role. After Maria had seduced half the cast, the compere did ask the children in the audience of 2000 whether they had understood any of it. I think the accent probably saved us.

We have to share Shortis & Simpson with you sometime too - start a whip-round.

Chris

It occurs to me to threaten that I have now rehearsed "Reynardine" (the short, Fairport, version) mentioned here by MGAS

and I am looking forward to this session.

My floors are now full for this event (after discussions with Growler earlier tonight) so random fly-bys are out of luck (unless female, slim, randy, and well-spoken, with a penchant for fat old men, in which case my bed is five feet wide).

IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND GROWLER IS TO BE CONGRATULATED ON HAVING PULLED A GROUP OF THIS CALIBRE.

The North Kent mob must really b there or b square, put up or shut up, etc etc.

WE ARE YOUNG AT HEART!!!!

Fat is relative. I am not as fat as some, but I am fatter than most. And whatever Hamish Imlach may have said, fat is not beautiful!

I am definitely old, grey hair, grey beard.

I would agree that many of us never grow up, but we do grow old, as our eyes and teeth and other bits try to tell us.

Hearts? We may still have fun, but look at some of the prats of under 25 and the way they act, the jealousy, the spite, the preening, the fashion trends. Happily not all the young are like that, but a depressing number are. To have outgrown at least some of that is not bad, but good.

Even at heart, we are older than we were. In some ways we are worse, but in some better. One of the ways we may be better would be in not trying to pretend to be what we are not.

Thought for the day. Amen.

Bog off Richard, we are grey and fatter than we used to be, but we havn't grown up yet, so we have the wisdom of our years and the spirit of youth,( and we know more songs than they do ),so were's the downside,

I wholeheartedly agree Growler. He's feeling low at the moment. Cheer up Richard, and get practicing your finger picking for Knockers.

Wisdom of our years!   Where is Ricky Tomlinson when you need him?

The collective wisdom of a bunch of folkies is inversely proportional to the number of empties, probably on some sort of log scale. Fun yes: sense, my oath!

What we do have is more memories of enjoyable foolishness, because we've done more of them, on average.

Even if a folkie practices finger picking, who is going to fancy any old plucking? This is not an offer open to acceptance by all, by the way.

It is Pete's funeral and wake on Tuesday. That's another thing wrong with getting old. Dead friends. Youth is wasted on the young, so much of the time.

Thank you so much, Shiny Bums, you were brilliant. Quite unlike anything I've seen/heard before. As Growler said, the Morris dance using keyboards was unforgettable; definitely one of the funniest things I've ever seen. And I wasn't the only one crying with laughter at it.

I'm sorry I missed you at the end and didn't get the chance to say goodbye in person. Enjoy the rest of your time in Britain and I hope our paths will cross again.

Fisheye was not at the Bums. He is talking of different video (or videeeo, I wonder if it will play on a video player).

The Bums aver that Sir Les is blamed for a lot of misconceptions about Australians... I think they take him off on purpose.

Dead Horse, I have seen a sheaf of undoubtedly genuine letters from increasingly senior Australian civil servants, and politicians, testifying to the worth of the Bums work.

No, Kitty disappointment doesn't happen when the bums are about!
WOW just recovering from Bude Festival. Thank you so much Chris, David, Arminel, Pat and Kerry for your company on Friday night, It was an unforgettable experience. Keyboard Morris, mobile phones, ID cards, Lift tai chi, I am still pinching myself to think how lucky we were to have you at our first festival. Thank you so very much. Photos of the Bude Bums are available HERE
I hope the photos I took on Kerry's camera came out OK.
I do hope we will meet again, and Arminel i'll let you have the viagra song if you think you dare sing it! LOL
Much love and thanks to you ALL.
Lucy x

A huge thanks to Chris, Kerry, Pat, Arminel and Dave for brightening my day today - and for presenting me with an autographed copy of the 2007 tour book and a CD.

I owe them all a large drink (at the least) - they can explain why, and it's all my fault.

I hope to get an opportunity some time to see them in a folk club or festival setting rather than at my place of work!

Kitty

Here Here to all the comments above. As an organiser of a small town folk club, ( albeit, voted the best venue on Mudcat), I thank the Bums for a special afternoon, that will long be remembered

Thanks again to everyone, certainly including Richard Bridge - scholar and gentleman - for putting up the unkempt Bums overnight. Growler - the curry was great, and most welcome! We did scandalously overlook to present Richard with a songbook and CD between our varying departures, but they are awaiting him at the Good Intent with our apologies.

Melodeonboy, we ain't seen or heard nothing like you either! Attempts by the Bums to describe your person and performance to others are foundering on the rocks. I think I referred to your voice as being pitched in the key of minus 20 degrees Centigrade, or was that Growler? My last dying word will probably be 'Torremolinos'.

I will reconnect if I can before departure.

Cheers,
Chris
