Subject: Catters Still With Us From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 01 Apr 07 - 09:24 PM Give them the roses, while they live. It's great to remember those who've passed on, as another thread is doing... how come nobody has done Rick Fielding, yet. That said, Mudcat is blessed with some legendary, wonderful people who are still with us. Two who immediately come to mind because I have such great respect for them as people, first, and then as pivotal performers and preservers of traditional American folk music are my dear friend Art Thieme and a woman I had the great pleasure of booking in the concert series I ran for many years, Jean Ritchie. Anyone who has known them, or even heard them, know what a national treasure they are. And they are still with us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not meant to be a popularity thread, as someone is always quick to say. I'ts just to give credit where credit is due to people who are still keeping on, and have been a critical part of the folk community for many years. And are fellow Catters.. (can women be fellows?) Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: Dave'sWife Date: 01 Apr 07 - 09:29 PM All hail Jean Ritchie, I agree. She was somebody I admired as a teen (1970s) running around with a notebook trrying to catch legendary alternate verses to songs from my great Uncles and such. I was rather annoying. ( Art Thieme seems swell too!) |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: Susanne (skw) Date: 06 Apr 07 - 03:59 PM I've never met or even heard them, but I'm always grateful to read a contribution by Frank Hamilton and by Sandy and Caroline Paton. It's good to know they - like Jean Ritchie, Art Thieme and as yet unnamed others (like Jerry himself) - are always ready to share their knowledge and experience with us. Don't let this thread die! |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: katlaughing Date: 06 Apr 07 - 04:42 PM I'll see ya those two, of course! and raise ya one Sandy and one Caroline Paton! Along with a host of others! Great idea for a thread! |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 06 Apr 07 - 04:58 PM I thought that I was very gracious, Kat, not mentioning Sandy & Caroline. They certainly are in the Select Few. Across the pond, I think of Roy Harris, and over this way, Bob Coltman would get my vote. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: kendall Date: 06 Apr 07 - 05:00 PM Thanks to Sandy and Caroline.Without them, many of us would never have been recorded at all. They top my list of great ones. |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Apr 07 - 06:36 PM Ya' know......You could well mention yourself there Kendall. I mean why not? 'Course you could wait for someone else like me to do it but then again, hell, what's the chances of that happening? Yeah, better you just go it on your own and ....... HEY JERRY......Kendall would like to nominate himself. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: katlaughing Date: 06 Apr 07 - 07:11 PM Pedant alert!!! Thanks to Sandy and Caroline, many of us would never have been recorded at all. Might want to rephrase that? Or, repunctuate? I KNOW what you meant. **BG** |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: Fortunato Date: 07 Apr 07 - 07:55 PM Kendall, I respectfully disagree with your statement about self-promotion and New Englanders. I assume you still have politicians up your way? Next you'll be saying lying is unknown up your way as well, eh? I'm glad you're still around, nonetheless. cheers chance |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Apr 07 - 09:00 PM Jerry, one of the things people like about you, is that you don't realize what a legend you are. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Catters Still With Us From: Menno Date: 08 Apr 07 - 08:17 AM Well, in that case we must also give a special mention to Mr. Ronnie Drew, who was prematurely declared dead on his Wikipedia entry. Apparently they called Sean Cannon about it, and he said "Well I'm sure he'd have told me." |
