Playford's 'Dancing Master' is all tunes, no songs. Maggot's were instrumental pieces, not written for songs. On very rare occasions songs were written to the tune of a maggot. (Poor Robins' Maggot). There are about 40 maggots listed in the file CNTYDAN1 of country dances earlier than 1730 on my website. www.erols.com/olsonw

Thank you Bruce. Forgive my ignorance but what does the term 'maggot' refer too? I was posting this request on behalf of someone else and after searching the DT found Robin's Maggot and assumed it meant the insect!!! Have you an ABC for this tune ? I note from your site the refs : DMA11, CDM1 269,CDM5 67 but cannot find any files that relate. Many thaks again. Bev Lawton

To tell the truth, I don't really know. It does appear that they were mostly (or all?) dance tunes. The subject popped up on the Scots-L list a few months ago, but my recollection is that nothing very informative came out of that.
