Here's a wee challenge to all of you fine folk artists.
There are many, many Mudcatters who will never get to hear you play live. You'll never meet them and they will not find your music in any retail outlet where they live.
There are a few on-line audio sites which allow free down-loads.
You know where I'm going with this, right?
Why not make your music available for 5 days. Post a thread in Your name and take the site down after the 5 day period.
I promise; You will be blown away by the response and will make a lot of people happy.
Just a wee thought.

Well here I go , I will not be able to take my site down after 5 days.
Here are a few songs I recorded on my home computer in 2001.
I use them on my site to give visitors a feel for how the song goes .
I play all the music myself so dont expect too much .
1 Red Is The Rose
2Luke Kelly's Land
3Come By The Hills

Not at all what I had in mind, Shaneo but an enjoyable experience none the less. I think there's already a "You Tube" thread where you can submit that.
I'm really inviting those with product to make it available to us for a very short time. That would probably involve letting go of everything you've learned about marketing, for just a few days.

Hi Kids!: For anybody interested in the ongoing saga of "Little Known 60's Folksingers" and what they do now, you can check out these songs: "The Soul Eater" and "The Ghost of Elvis". And, yes yes, I know. I still play the acoustic guitar. And these are LIKE folksongs, but just a teensie bit different...

Jim: I'm a bit new with computers, so if the idea is to create threads, I'll have to read the manual on that one. I just had to read the book to figure out "cut and paste" on my new machine. But your idea is a great one. And in it's own way, "SHARE YOUR MUSIC" is a great title that provides a focal point for everybody to contribute to. Think of it like the Wright Brothers, it's taking off, but in it's own special way. And, remember, it's Easter time, a time of PEACE. bob

This is a song which I wrote as a deliberate parody of the stereotyped Irish neo-folk song.
You can hear the song and read the story of how I came to write it on the page.
Fields of the West
And before anyone points out that you don't have lambs at the same time as apples- that is the point- it's a fantasy, false nostalgia.

Still learning.

Shaneo
Fabulous music! I may look into doing a version of Shanagolden and Come by the Hills, differently than yours, of course! They're beautiful, and I'd never heard them before. Seeing the photos of Ireland made me miss it even more - it's been, ummm, 16 years since I was there for a semester.
On the thread, I'm not sure how to do what you're suggesting, but I do have a few tunes up on my my space site, Pioden's myspace page.
Just a word about the music, there're different types, b/cause I wanted to show versatility to those that might hire me (gasp) to play for them. The songs range from trad Celtic, through blues-ish, and the last one is even a rap song, but it's fairly mild and unoffensive.
Hope you enjoy!
Pioden

Jim Lad, I truly share your frustration. In the thread asking for Easter songs, I told about my husband George Pickow's putting a few of my songs on Youtube as videos, one an Easter song. Not one person looked at them, nor made a single acknowledgment of my post about it. So,as you do, I also give up. From now on I become a lurker. JR

Pioden: I work with a very talented artist/engineer by the name of Gideon"Moses Child" Cohen, who owns Sonic Tonic Recording in Montreal. I originally brought him "The Ghost of Elvis" for Re-mixing from my project studio. I then upgraded everything to 48 tracks and we collaborated on "The Soul Eater". I tell all of you this to inspire you to embrace the new technology to keep Folk Music alive. If the kids out there are only hearing rappers and hip-hop, what do you think they'll end up with? To my mind, Folk Music was always about self-expression. The Yellow Door in Montreal always allowed the performer to do whatever they chose, comedy, magic, voice, etc. with little restriction. All sorts of artists performed there and it made "Folk Music" a viable force that would get played on the radio. The music will evolve. I see nothing wrong in respecting the tradition that we all know, but then too I feel it's important to try new things. I might have done those two songs with an acoustic guitar in the 60's, and I would have been called a "Folkie". Now, using multiple DAW's, 4 Synthes, and imported loops what am I really doing? I'm STILL telling stories, but in a new way...If you want Folk Music to live, let it breathe. Show it to your kids. Start Folk Clubs in church basements. Do whatever it takes to get airplay, and maybe you will hear Folk on mainstream radio. But it might not sound like the past. This thread could develop into an online HOOT. You sign up with your songs, just like the old days, and then the whole thing is streamed and Podcasted so it gets into new ears. Time to sign off. bob
p.s. Peace: I think, "the jack and ace, they embrace this place," and sometime, I'll have to "come across to you" just after Che Guevarra claims his crown...

Kytrad: Yer a wee siren! That was absolutely lovely and quite nostalgic in the sound. Brenda came home from her group practice just as it was ending so we played it all over again. Couldn't take our eyes off the art as it played. Your my Berkley Woman now!
For those on dial up: It's a very long piece and will take a long time to load so you probably won't. Not to worry. It's just the voice of an Angel singing about the passion, death & resurrection to the sounds of a dulcimer, nylon string guitar I think, recorder & a wee bit of 5 string in there too. All with a real Sixties quality to it and just a bit Appalachian sounding at the end. Oh! and some drawings.
Did I miss anything?

kytrad, I hope you will reconsider "just lurking". And I hope all of you will run over to Youtube and type "Ritchie" into the search engine. What you will see is our most beloved folk performer playing the music that we all love. Jean Ritchie (kytrad) is a giving performer who shares a lifetime of singing with us so freely. And if you want a real treat, type "Ritchie Seeger" into the search engine. You will see Pete and Jean singing "Jenny Jenkins". That video is a priceless gift. To watch these two dear friends, two of the greatest and most accomplished performers of all time, just enjoying singing together...it just leaves me astounded that this gift is given to us.

All the best,

Mick

Well now: I was going to open a thread at some point, asking where I could find good Appalachian music. I've been interested in it for a couple of years now and thought, maybe I'd learn a song or two. Trouble is, I didn't know what to ask for. I can hear it rattling around in my skull but probably couldn't put it into words. Then, last night kytrad showed up in here and I checked out one of her songs. I listened to some more tonight and I must say that this is exactly what I've been looking for although the vocals are much sweeter than any Appalachian music I've heard in the past.
I can be forgiven for not knowing who Jeany Ritchie is. There wasn't a lot of Kentucky (I love that word).. Kentucky music where I was raised and vandalizing. So go easy on me.
But this is exactly what I was looking for when I started this thread.
Professional musicians, willing to ignore the rules by making some of their music available. That is a "Win, win situation" by my standards.
Thank You kytrad. Oh! I know what that means now. Neat!
http://www.jeanritchie.com/
Check it out.
To the rest of you. I am enjoying your contributions. Please keep them coming. I'll get through them all sooner or later.
Thank Yous
Jim

Jim, may I recommend to you her books? In addition to being one of the great singers of all time, she is also an accomplished author. She and George are also known in the folk community as collectors of the first order. She was awarded a Fulbright grant to study the links between the mountain music she was raised with, and the music in the back country of Ireland, Scotland and England. During this time she "discovered" Elizabeth Cronin, and was delighted that they knew songs in common.

Her whole life is a wonderful story with much yet to be written. And the best part ........ Jean, George, and son Jon are some of the nicest folks you will meet anywhere.

Get to know her music. You won't be sorry.

All the best,

Mick

Jim......She is more than just an Appalachian singer, she is the Mother of the Appalachian Dulcimer AND the carrier of the "Ritchie Voice."   A large family that made serious music my friend and all blessed with that pure clarity you've just found. One of her sisters, Edna, did a recording for Folk Legacy that is a must have. Edna seemed to use her Dulcimer not so much for accompaniment but more for accent. Anytime anyone has mentioned that theydon't like the Appalachian Dulcimer for whatever reason, I force them to listen to Edna Ritchie.   She had a wonderful "take" on the instrument....I have no idea why.

Jean IS a treasure and I too would will her back to posting......Dang Jean, I wasn't even around much in the weeks surrounding Easter!!! Now c'mon back here!!!
