Subject: Levellers From: GUEST,Teachers Pest Date: 05 Apr 07 - 01:54 PM After watching all the discussions about,"What is Folk," and who is deemed to be folk artists.Do the Levellers fall in to The Folk scene or not ?After all they play all,the right instruments/write their own/use everyday topics/lived the life and comply with all the other demands needed bt the folk scene. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: Peace Date: 05 Apr 07 - 02:08 PM Maybe yes and maybe no. It will depend on who you ask. IMO, a populist political movement from hundreds of years ago is a strange thing to be popping into The Folk scene, but, hey, go for it. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: Mrs.Duck Date: 05 Apr 07 - 03:51 PM I hate the way we have to compartmentalise music. The Levellers are definitely strongly influenced by folk and traditional music. What they have become may not comform to a traditionalists view of folk but if what they do is good does it matter? I think they're great and also enjoy Green Day who I think have a lot in common but are perhaps moving further from the folk scene. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: katlaughing Date: 05 Apr 07 - 03:56 PM It is good to remember this is an international site and to put in a link to whatever is being discussed for those who may not be familiar with the subject: The Levellers. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: Leadfingers Date: 05 Apr 07 - 07:00 PM Folk as we know it , from whereever . is a VERY broad church - IF You are a Traditionalist , there are a lot of people who DONT fall into waht YOU think of as folk , but are perfectly acceptable to others on the folk scene ! I still Never Heard a Horse sing it !! |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: shepherdlass Date: 06 Apr 07 - 05:12 PM Does it matter? Probably not to the guys who wrote [sing along, everyone]... There's only one way of life and that's your own. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: Folkiedave Date: 07 Apr 07 - 03:54 AM The Levellers are appearing at Wychwood Festival 1-3 June on Cheltenham Racecourse. Also Afro-Celts and Eliza Carthy. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: GUEST,racksman Date: 07 Apr 07 - 04:11 AM Peace, I think they named themselves after a green space in Brighton known as the Levels. With the historical reference as well it made sense to them, given their folk pretensions. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: GUEST,ian Date: 07 Apr 07 - 08:55 AM I guess it does not matter if they are classed as folk or not,but i do understand Teachers Pest.I agree that the die hard folkists will not think of The Levellers as Folk.If you have ever managed to catch them in their Drunk In Pubic mode, then there is no better folk outfit around. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: the lemonade lady Date: 08 Apr 07 - 07:25 AM They also drink a lot and are abusive to festival organisers on stage. Not a bunch of gentlemen. Don't converse with any other artists and have a rider that will stagger you |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: Geoff the Duck Date: 08 Apr 07 - 09:22 AM As far as I was aware, the name - The Levellers is a reference to a grouping from the time of Cromwell and the English Civil War. They were a different grouping from the Diggers, known as the True Levellers. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: Levellers From: GUEST,Teachers Pest Date: 08 Apr 07 - 03:11 PM The Levellers organise their own festival in Devon called Beautiful Days and the event is sold out well in advance always.Maybe the people don't know their 1st appearance money at Glastonbury was given to the nearest CND at the time.Maybe they saw fit to organise their own as festivals are now one big commercial rip off.Free festivals in Europe are more their thing and always was Ms Lemon. |
