Subject: Lyr Req: Reusing an old shirt

Hello friends.

Many years ago (30?) I recall hearing a song about a shirt that starts out as a shirt, but in each verse it gets reused for something else. Needing a song for Earth Day, and woke up thinking about this song, but have no more details. Can anyone help jog my memory?

Thanks,
Flannelshirt

Hi, Flannelshirt - I'm wondering if it's the old Yiddish song, I Had a Little Overcoat. I sing it as I Had an Old Coat.

Mary-Chapin Carpenter wrote a lovely song called "This Shirt", which speaks of using a shirt for many things.

Thank you Joe. It was that very nice Paul Kaplan song that I remembered. The lyrics are After a little more research, the following links were helpful for the music.

Peter and Ellen

Sharon Lois & Bram (Requires Rhapsody Player)

Many thanks. Now I can have a full night's sleep. :)

Reuse an old shirt by making it into a tatter coat.

There is also a childrens book on this theme....something about a red shirt...I can't for the life of me remember the title of the book, but a man keeps patching and patching his red shirt. Help?

Hi, Sorcha - I wonder if you're thinking of Joshep Had a Little Overcoat, a Caldecott Medal winning book by Simms Tabak. Whether it's the right book or not, I'd highly recommend the Tabak book.

Sorry Joe, but that isn't it. The one I'm remembering had no religious overtones at all. The man was just a man in a red shirt. Really bugs me I can't remember.
