WYSIWYG - thanks for the info. I was hoping for some late night coverage of the Red Wings down here but it looks like we might not get it since the Stars are also playing out west. Hopefully they'll schedule the games in a fashion to allow for the viewing of both.
Next year it's going to be a "Center Ice" year in this house.
BTW - for anyone who reads this - do you have any experience with Center Ice broadcasts either on tv or over the internet? I've heard that the internet broadcasts are not of very high quality.

I think the NHL game times they posted so quickly may be wrong, since Versus has said they will have 7PM and 10PM coverage.... I'm going to check the Versus schedule again to be sure. In any case we have enjoyed NHL Radio, and often that coverage is stored and will re-stream up-- until they get ready for that team's next game.

In case anyone doesn't know the following, or knows better than I do:

If your PC has Total Recorder you can set it for start/end times, like a VCR... the problem with NHL Radio I had, though, was that I have not yet been able to determine that I can turn it on early, leave, and count on it to start sound when the coverage begins. What you CAN do, though, for sure, is find out what radio station the NHL Radio feed is FROM (usually the regular radio partner for your team's regular season play), and get that streaming early in the day. You let that run, with Total Recorder programmed to start recording just before the start of whatever pregame show you might like.

LOCAL TV OPTION: I know this is true for the Pens games; I am not sure it applies to all teams. But I undertand that in the US, Versus doesn't have an exclusive deal. The local (in our case cable) broadcast will still happen, in realtime-- and that means a cheap VCR is in order if you lack recording capability. (NBC's deal IS exclusive as far as I know.)

PC PKGS: We don't do this so I don't have details, but I DO know that a lot of hockey fans have cable by demand, some via their PCs, and record to DVD from that. Now, I can't imagine getting set for that if you aren't already familiar/equipped, in the next 2-3 days-- but you might know someone in your area who MIGHT be set up for it, and who might be "bought"! :~)

It's a good time to find your favorite sports bar and see what they plan. Maybe they can tape, and replay for a crowd at a later time, though that would be illegal and WRONG! :~)

Thank God I am semi-retired and don't have to use up sick days for the playoffs! :~)

Last year I watched every gfame, every team, that I could. When it was over I was massively in withdrawal. This year I will do a lot of taping and Total Recording, but save a lot of them for the summer.

And yes I do love hockey-- one reason is because it's so energizing to watch it that I spend a lot of the game-break time running around to do the chores I hate. My house and my laundry benefit, and so does my metabolism. Also our dog is addicted-- he gets a chew-treat at each goal scored by the good guys, so he plays close attention to the commentators and crowd noises to anticipate these. And I don't mind seeing a game twice-- once live and once again in the next day or two with Hardi if his schedule has made him miss the live coverage.

It's all good! (Except the excessive number of bookmarks I have accumulated.)

I'll watch but I won't like it...My Flyers just stunk up the joint!!! The worst record in the league!!! And to make matters worse, my saviors, the Phillies, the Beast of the East, the TEAM TO BEAT.....is 1 and 6. And oh yeah, Spring is a total no show! It's after Easter and I'm still wearing a winter coat to work!!!!!

On the up side, the Flyers have possibly solved their goaltending woes with Biron! Of course that's next year...... :(

Well, we've watched the video of Game 1, and here's our take:

The Pens didn't go down quite as badly as the naysaying commentary in the press might indicate. In the third period, they finally got the butterflies out and their unique, signature game on, and scored two goals before time ran out. I think they have a good chance of coming out strong in Game 2.

Now, on to the hopefully-extralong Stars/Canucks game for the evening. Hope the tape is long enough! :~)

The schedule you posted is missing some games--the word I heard today is that game 2 Pittsburgh-Ottawa is 3 pm Saturday, (considered a pretty weird time, as if something is wrong with playing a game on Saturday afternoon.)

I don't watch NHL hardly at all, but I'd like to see Crosbie play. I was annoyed that he wasn't on Canada's Olympic team last year--yet that thug Bertuzzi was. Real Olympic ideals in practice--not! Gretzky was a far better player than he is a manager.

None of them like early games, cuz their day is geared to night games. I think they have trouble knowing what time to poop and it throws off their whole day. :~)

Leftydee - I'd love to buy my tickets now but the Stars are not scoring goals - Turco's playing heads up but Modano and Morrow and company are not giving him any support, so the Stars, down 2-1 and headed to Vancouver may not make it.

I was also thinking last night that the Wings usually play Dallas in the conference finals and the Wings will have to get by the Ducks (and I think they can)to get that opportunity. Either way, though, between NBC and Versus, why it looks like every Red Wings game will be on television and that is an acceptable situation when you live thirteen-hundred miles from home ice.

But, let's keep this thread running through the playoffs - it's a great way for hockey fans of all teams to communicate and ride each other for fun.

Oh, man does it hurt today. I caught a few hours of WXYT over the net yesterday and the question of the day was whether or not to start Bertuzzi if he is ready to go - the problem was that the WINGS are on a roll, do you want to break up the lines and and mess with the momentum they have going?

Well, as usual, they didn't listen to me. My thought was - leave it alone, let Bertuzzi sit, don't mess with the chemistry. Well it's a sad day in Hockeytown South; hell, even the Stars lost their game so there's no emotional refuge to be found there. Fortunately the WINGS
are still up 2-1 in the series (Stars are now down 3-1 and headed back out to Vancouver)and they'll get to return to "The Joe" again. GO RED WINGS!

It's sad to see the media ganging up on the Pens, who were never even expected to make the playoffs. The talk about the second-period slump, especially. I bet there's a physiological cause having to do with maturing bodies of young men-- it's not so different from what we see in road cycling, where it isn't until the mid-20's to later 20's that muscle, bone, and testosterone production combine for explosive power and sustainable power over the length of a stage race (such as 3 weeks in the Tour de France), not to mention overnight recovery to do it all again the next day, not to mention the much-hyped "experience" factor. You can only jerk the chain of adrenaline so many times before other body systems have to take over, and all the heart in the world won't make a body mature quicker. We'll see how much last night's adrenaline surge to look better in the second period hurt the Pens when they try not to get eliminated in Ottawa tomorrow night. I only hope the media disappointment doesn;t interfgere with the team, coachiung staff, and management learning the strategic lessons inherent in ANY Cup experience, and take the positives from this post-season that they have all earned.

RE GAME COVERAGE:
I think I have said this before, but in case anyone doesn't know it, NHL Radio streams are available to hear (and record if you have Total Recorder or similar gizmos) the day after the game and sometimes longer, until the link for the team's next game goes up. Since TR can only record one game at a time, I'm getting some of last night's action now, that was blocked from TV for our area (DAMN Versus!).I'll use the games to keep me fired up while I aquajog in the coming weeks, and for recliner entertainment with Hardi over the summer hockey break.

This week we tried a new recliner-hockey thing, it was helpful as well as fun. I printed off the Devils and Lightning rosters. I took the Lightning, Hardi took the Devils. Roster in hand, I sat in the recliner at MY goalie's end of the ice, and Hardi the Devils end. "Here we come to get you," I'd say as the radio announcer gave us the call. It sounds silly, but we did actually learn who was playing for whom so well, and visualize the ice so well by putting ourselves in relative ends of the ice, that it made the game a lot easier to follow just in practical terms. And it was fun! (I beat him of course, but he got even last night.) Now, the recliners were actually side by side, but it really helped me keep track of what direction the paly was moving and therefore wich side was right and left from that view as the announcer called it. If we listen to the games in our camper this summer we'll sit across from each other and wave mini-sticks at a checker on the table! :~) Pong-style hockey!

Just thinkin about last nights game and it looks like my beloved Wings are back on track for a repeat of their usual early round playoff bow-out. The loss last night turns this thing into a "best of three" series and the momentum surely in the Flames camp. There is some solace, however, the Stars won their game despite Mike Modano and that keeps hockey alive on the sports pages and the radio talk shows in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

A very happy night in Hockeytown and Hockeytown South. I can only hope that the distasteful actions of the Calgary Flames near the end of the game will be the impetus to spur the Wings on to put this puppy to bed tomorrow afternoon.

And, to top it off - the Stars win too! The same for them - the distateful actions of the Canucks near and at the end of their game should spur the Stars on to kick their collective asses on Monday. The sport is rough enough - we don't need cheap shots designed to do nothing but take people out of the game. I have to say I am really impressed with the Senators, and it's getting harder to stay mad at them for kicking us out. I said at the end of Round 1 that this may be their year. They certainly look that way from their ability to deal with Brodeur. I hate him-- so I wish them well. :~)

I think, after seeing the videos again briefly, that what they did to the Pens was to play them man-to-man when the Pens had worked hard all year to learn and incorporate a positional system. Last year, you could jerk them off their game by scaring them into chasing pucks, and people. Therrien broke them of that and that's good. No doubt he will continue to teach them new approaches as they mature as a team.

I would have liked to see the Pens assistant coaches come up with some better special-teams approaches to address what the Sens threw at them. I hope they come up with some honest, denial-avoiding answers on that over the summer.

I am not yet a Malkin fan. I think the NHL was bigger, faster, tougher, meaner, and more skilled than he bargained for and that he got rattlesd. Not only in the playoffs, but all year he was inconsistent in things large and small. The small things bother me-- being able to pass and receive passes for instance, and being able to read plays better. It will not surpise me if he decides, after playing for Russia this summer, if he decides he'd rather be a huge fish in a small pond than come back to the NHL. Of course this WAS his rookie year-- and not all rookies do as well as Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal in maturing their skills.

The Sens also are fulfilling another prediction I made after last year's Cup and since then, and that is that the winning team has to be able to play every round differently and be able to adjust not only strategy but skills, depending on what's being shown to them by their opponents. I see the Sens doing that so far; that takes not only players with a variety of skills to apply but a coach who can see and explain what he wants them to do differently. The Oilers were THE model of this last year. This year I see the Sens showing some signs of it. It's too early to tell, but again-- it may be that this is their year.

I think the Pens are also going to capapble of that approach in the near future; the assitant coaches who are in charge of special teams bear a large part of that challenge. (I think Therrien already has that mindset.) I hope GM Ray Shero holds steady on his stated commitments and has the patience to let that approach grow with the boys' ability to fulfill it.

By the time our arena is done, we ought to be able to host the Cup finals. And maybe win it that year.

Well, unfortunately JSG has had the Wings number for several years now - he just seems to always pose a severe obstacle for my guys; having written that - you cannot take as many shots as the Wings did and not get the biscuit in the basket without being considered "snake bit," and I think the Wings are just that - in this series.

Consider: the Wings take game one - YAY! - then proceed to play a tight second game only to lose in overtime - at home - Boo! So, I'm thinking, o.k., go out to California, split the two games and you're back to home ice advantage - Wings take game three, STRONGLY - YAY!

So, now we're looking at game four with the a**hole Pronger sitting on the wooden slats and I'm thinking that the Red Wave will come out kicking tail and take this series to 3-1 with the series going back to The Joe. No way - Wings lose, big time - Boo! That win is a real lift to the stinking, lousy, weasel team from California but they play a sub-par game five that they should have lost - then win it in overtime at The Joe due to a late cheap penalty (but legit) and a bad turn-over in front of the Wings net - Boo! Two costly Red Wing mistakes.

The Wings "should" have won that game - it was theirs - now their collective ass is on the ropes and I would be surprised to see a game seven in Detroit. Even with that, I love 'em and I'll be cheering like hell on Tuesday and anything can happen in NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. If, however, the Wings don't go to the finals I will immediately becmome a Senators fan (only for a brief time, mind you) as I really do dislike those cheap-shot a**holes from California who don't deserve to win anything, much less, get their name on the Stanley Cup.

Is it just me, or did camera angles bring the games this year much closer than last year's coverage (all year)?

Last year I think the cameras were pulled back a bit to show the plays shaping up from farther back, and showing more of the ice surface at any given time. Now it all is shot so zoomed-in that I can't see what they're doing as a whole team until they show the replay's altrernate cameras. I think before, the alternate view was the closer one. Now it's all just big guys in bright suits, close in, with play by play that sees and tries to describe more but that we can't see for ourselves.

It's part of a deliberate marketing strategy on the part of the NHL. It emanates from there....

If you look at the NHL.com site-- in the material around the Collective Bargaining Agreement that ended the lockout-- you'll note that new broadcasting initiatives are included? Because at the time of the CBA, the NHL and the players agreed on the basic princiople that they had damn near killed hockey with all the pay-per-view stuff that was paying for the big-money teams.

The salary cap came, on one side of the equation; the increased marketing to fans came on the other side. It was all part of a plan to return hockey to its tradtionally-broadbased target market-- jack up prices on game tix and concessions, but keep media coverage affordable by letting corporate sponsors pay to show it to us.

It worked to the extent that now, Versus and NBC have got a sponsor for every moment of the game. In addition to the traditional ads plastered on the boards, we get our screens cluttered up with logos of who's sponsoring the power plays, and so forth. The opening faceoffs are sponsored by "Blah Blah Company brings the puck on time."

They are selling not only the commercial time, but screenshot time during the game itself. It clutters up the screen, but at least it's not pay-per-view.

Some of the coaches like it more than others. Some of them, you can see the lips curl as they speak. Some play to the camera; I think their relationships with their particular GMs have a lot to do with their motivation. But this is also how and why we get "Mic'd Up" at intermission (player talk from during the play of the game), and why Marty Turco was not only mic'd during the AllStar game, but his entire in-game chat with the commentators was live, not during intermission... "s'cuse me a minute, guys, I think the puck's coming this way," was a little unreal.

There is certainly a deeper level to this media agreement than we have access to~ if you are going to play mic'd up, you have to have some basic trust that someone in your team's organization is going to screen and pre-approve what will be used, or it could get pretty colorful to say the least. "I'm gonna kill that m*therf*cker," just before a hard hit for instance, could be used in league discipline, and no player I know of would agree to a mic that would be used THAT way, never mind colorful and potentially ethnic remarks from an agitator, etc. They would have to have some basic comfort level with the policy that's controlling all that, or it would distrct them too much from playing at the speed and level they play.

SOMEbuddy's gotta be in charge of all that, and I'd love to be a fly on THAT wall, wouldn't you?

Maybe a tradeoff for the teams is all the free game film from every possible camera angle they could wish, served up keyed to player stats for them. That could be a nice chucnk of change they'd be saving the teams, to turn all that over gratis. "Here's your Chelios CD-ROM for the week," and so forth. It would save the teams some techie staff, and I could see that as a strong bed-sharing motivator.

Pronger also was suspended previously for delivering a blow to the head of Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom in the Western Conference Final.

Pronger will be eligible to return for Game 5, Wednesday at Anaheim.

Yes, Beer! I belly-laughed every time I saw it. What a guy! I recall a TV interview with him where he said he prided himself on never throwing the second punch! We use to call him "The Big Stick."

Gosh... Jean Belliveau, The Rocket, Eddy Shack, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull.... countless names come back to my mind...

Remember the so called great fight expectation that was going to happen between Shack and Fergie? The game took place an if memory serves me right They bumped into each other and when Fergie looked his way and made a move, Eddy took of for the bench. It was a great laugh. When I look back now I see Eddy as being just a great guy that was really just having fun.

Can anyone remember this one:
On Coaches Corner, Don Cherry is shown standing with his arms in the air and egging at the crowd. I remember him doing this in the televised game but can't remember who it was against or what caused the moment.

Anyway, Susan, the TV commercial: This big tough hockey player wakes up. The coloured bed sheets have a dainty floral pattern trim. As soon as he opens his eyes, he looks at the flowers and smiles contentedly. Then, he looks at the camera and says something like, "Hey, it means I'm not in the hospital."

We really like the cuurent ad campaigns-- the NHL's that shows players off the ice having a lot of fun: "They're just like you and me, plus they're really good at hockey." And the other series, not NHL-sponsored, that shows wannabe's getting taken down a peg or two: "You wouldn't make it in the NHL." Hilarious!

What Alfredsson did, shooting the puck at Niedermayer, is far more dangerous than an elbow to the head.
Agreed, Pronger gets a little mental irregularity periodically and his brain doesn't seem to match his body size! Alfie seems to fly in just under the radar on most nights. Never seems to do anything that the refs catch(because he watches them) or the league feels requires supplemental punishment after revue, but he is a dirty player all the same, and just as dangerous!
I've been at this game for over 45 yrs and refereed for much of those. I'll take an elbow over a puck any day!!!

P.S.
as I've stated in the past, a Europian has never captained a Stanley Cup Champ!!!!

Well.... forget the crap penalties. It is the Duck's game. If they can't even "put the puck on the net" on a power play, all is lost.

If they do pull this one out, I'll be very surprised. Only way they might is if they decide to control the puck on the way in instead of just slapping it into the corner. Or, at least, PUT THE PUCK ON THE NET... gee!

Well, glad that's over - what a crock. Nice article today at FOX Sports on Betteman(sp?) and how he really mucked up the NHL.
I didn't get into the politics of what was going down when it happened, but according to this author, G.B. is to blame for the demise of the NHL as it was and as it was headed. No, I am NOT a FOX news person but their sports page is not bad, and, it is another source. Looking forward to the 2008 hockey season and the run for the cup. GO RED WINGS!!!
