I'm going to Scotland in late July, will be mainly based in Fort Augustus, but also passing through Glasgow. Any Mudcatters up there I could meet up with at worthwhile events? - Susanne

If ya fancy a day trip, pop over to Larne, N.Ireland on a saturday..Boat takes about 1 hour and arrives in Larne from Cairnryan. Four miles outside Larne you'll hit our joint and we play on saturday's at the Meeting House or Sundays in Carnlough. Good lot of tourists and if ya fancy staying the night I'm sure one of us can shackle you up somewhere. Over extends over Mudcatters

Harald,

Start a new thread for Northern Ireland trip. There are quite a few of Mudcatters from that part of the world, myself included... except I'm a lot further than an hours boat trip from Scotland now.

Slainte

We (The Ugie Folk Club) have our festival weekend 13-15 August. It is based in Fraserburgh (40 miles north of Aberdeen). There are a large contingent of artists coming up from N.E. England and also from Shetland and of course the N.E. of Scotland.
See our page for details http://ugiefolk.8m.com/

Thanks to you all! Sorry I got lost for a while - had to move my location as my activities on the office computer were discovered. Now I'm connected at home which will, I hope, make for much more peaceful Mudcatting. However, I lost - among other things - a mail from Harald and couldn't thank him. As for gigs and festivals - there should be enough to keep me busy! Thanks again. - Susanne

Harald, when were you planning to go to Scotland? I got your eMail at a particularly unfortunate time so I've lost your address. Write again if you're still interested in swapping ideas. I've since joined the Café but my address is still skw@worldmusic.de. - Susanne

For anybody who's currently in the vicinity, the following lecture on Thurs 20 May in Edinburgh may be of interest.
Breandan Ó Buachalla, visiting professor of Irish studies at Cambridge U.; "Poetry, Politics and Ideology in Jacobite Ireland", the O'Donnell lecture at the U of Edinburgh, lecture theatre B, David Hume Tower, Thurs. 20 May at 5.15 pm (It won't clash with any music sessions as they're normally after 8 pm)
I won't be able to attend as I'm too far from Edinburgh for a day trip, but I daresay ó Buachalla has published something on the subject.

It´s all in a little bit hurry now, I´m leaving for North Ireland in three days and my Scotland trip will start in the mid of June. Yeeeaaaah!!! So I will be "offline" from work and everything awkward in this country (but alas also Mudcat) the next six weeks.
Greetings to y´all and enjoy summer, may yer lum reek, slainte go foill, Harald

Here's another Mudcatter heading to Scotalnd in August. To be exact, I'm due to sail on a Tall Ship from Greenock to Lerwick in Shetland, Aug. 1-9. What's left of me will be picked up by partner thereafter in Aberdeen - looking for music! Fraserburgh sounds interesting.

Regards

Martin, I'm thinking of going to Greenock - I missed the Tall Ships at Dublin last year, though I was at Cruinniu na mBad. The latter event is good for sessions as well as for boats. Is there any music around the tall ships, shanties, etc? There's to be a Sail Hebrides event in the Western Isles first week of August; I think it will be a small affair - they had hoped to attract the Tall Ships to stop over. Anyway, Martin, how do you get to participate in such an adventure? I'm only a novice going out on dinghies and Toppers, but I have a good friend who is an experienced sailor and would love to do something like you're doing (not a musician, alas, but he cooked on a fishing boat so he'd be some use besides crewing). I'm at 1997-pr@smo.uhi.ac.uk untut 14 June.

Philippa,

I've been sailing small boats for many years (mostly on a lake). I'm also very fond of small islands! So when I saw the programme for this years Tall Ships Race, with a leg from Greenock ot Lerwick in Shetland - I decided to go for it! Spent an hour on the Internet chasing up a berth and signed on (at considerable expense - don't ask) on a Norwegian barque. Experience is not really necessary - probably gets in the way, I suspect.

I'm quite sure there'll be music around the trip. The leg is not even pretending to be a race so I expect there will be stopovers on several isalnds - with opportunities for sessions.

regards

Philippa, Martin,

I'll see you there! I'm actually sailing in a couple of weeks time on the Sir Winston Churchill in the pre-Race Clyde Challenge (race between the STA's 2 topsail schooners - very friendly but takes no prisoners, if oyu know what I mean). I don't live that far from Greenock so I expect I'll be around and about during the actual T.S. Races - should be a lot of fun!
