I'm guessing that as no one has mentioned it yet on Mudcat, that the episode of 'Play it again' (BBC1) with Frank Skinner learning the banjo, has only so far been shown in Northern Ireland. If so, its bound to be on soon in rest of UK - Frank tries the 5-string banjo finishing with an entry to the world championships. I'll not ruin it by telling you how he gets on, but he meets some interesting characters on his way.

It has been mentioned elsewhere, but I can't recall what the thread was entitled.
We watched the programme and found it quite interesting.
Quack!

Yes, it was; I saw it and it is definitely worth watching. He was being taught initially by Pete Stanley but changed his teacher part way through.

I've just read the whole of the Banjo Joke thread (don't know why I hadn't looked at it before) and having seen the programme I enjoyed reading all the comments on that thread.

I remember thinking as I looked at Pete Stanley's house - do all musicians surround themselves with piles of crap? Is it part of the mind set. Are there a race of neat tidy musicians somewhere?

I noticed this WLD,I have been in similar places that are identical, the late Nigel Chippendale's flat was similar, two straight line paces would have been out of the question,in fact one was an achievment.
The first of these programmes featured Jo Brand and finished up with her playing organ in the Albert Hall.I take my hat off to both of these artists, that with the amount of practice they had, to perform in such places was a compliment to their bravery. At the very least I would have had a heart attack.

i recorded it on DVD and got half way through watching it last night
while the wife is visiting her mother

.. then the disc started skipping and freezing

just during the practice sesion in the German nudist park..

'someone' [and theres only me and the mrs in our house]

has gauged tramline scratches right across the playing surface..

bugger !!!!

now gonna have to see if i can salvage the recording by ripping it onto my PC..

.. and yes our living space is as bad as Pete Stanley's house

and its all my fault..

..hhmmmm....!!!????

Pete collects things - that's all it is. Jam spoons, guitars, banjo memorabilia - stuff happens. A nicer man never lived.
Tidiness is the sign of a sick mind.

According to the late Quentin Crisp, dust reaches a certain thickness on surfaces and then stops.
An admirable thought!!
