I was asking a friend about Cajun Fiddle and she said I would have to use a different tuning. Has anyone any ideas as to tunings? Cheers Bill

I believe that the cajun fiddlers tune down one whole step, so that instead of E A D G, they have D G C A. That way you play normal G scales and end up in C, etc. There are probably some cross-tunings too.

Having consulted the wife, the source of all fiddle knowlege here at my place, she tells me they tune one whole step down to match the accordion, which is usually in "D". She also tells me it is to keep the sound mellow.

Of course, she has been wrong before, (I can say that here, she never reads this!) She also is following up on her promise to quit the fiddle altogether by giving the instrument away last night...(sob!)

Sorry, I didn't have my morning fix of caffeine, or my shoes off so I could transpose on my toes ! That should be D G C F for E A D G. (I think ?)

This could get very confusing. Easy to remember...the Cajun a'cordeen most used is in the key of "C"...therefore each fiddle string is tuned down one note so the key of "D" is then"C". ie, the fiddler plays in the key of "D" and it sounds like the key of "C"....cause that's what it is. The alternate tho rare a'cordeen keys are "G" "F" "D" "A". Except for "F" which is "G" in the re-tune, standard tuning is used. For the auto-harp and dulcimer start a new thread....please!
