Very sad news Val. Can't get down to Kent for Tuesday so I shall have to drink a toast to Pete up here instead. (Have got the bread soaking already.) Dave ( Ex Bishop Gundulfs) ps. Pete, being a gentleman would never make nasty comments. However, "increase" is an anagram of "Nice Arse"!

Fond memories of Pete with Crayfolk at the Railway in the 60's playing his 12 string with Pete Chopping on 6 string guitar and John Barker on double bass, was a big influence on getting us interested in Folk Music. Pete will be sadly missed.

Shocked to hear about Pete. He has influenced my taste in folk music since the early 70's. I first saw him at Farningham Folk Club with the Crayfolk. Pete singing Paddy Lay Back and Peggy Gordon will be forevever in my memory. There must be some good clubs up there now with John Barker with his double bass and Dave Bryant with his operatic voice. Pete's dad will be there as well playing harmonica. I hope his 12 string finds a good home.

My deepest condolences to all of Pete's family and friends. I first met him at Farningham in the late seventy's and we had been firm friends ever since. I am sorry I can't make Tuesday in person as I have to go to hospital but will be there in spirit. Musician, dancer, actor, pub landlord and friend, Pete was all of these. I have taken the liberty of putting a photo of him on the cover of the June Folk London and hope my printing company do it justice. It came from Blossom so blame him! God bless.

It's difficult to read through all these wonderful messages without it bringing a tear to your eye but at the end of the day it is also a reminder for us of so many good and fun memories of Pete and his days in the Vic.

Who can forget those wonderful firework displays where Pete simply put any apparent 'duds' on the bonfire and waited for the sparks to fly, health and safety was NOT an issue! Or the time the cat ate the meat from the buffet and Pete calmly shooed the cat, cut off the obviously gnawed bits and it was business as usual. It was all part of his charm! And the dinosaur disco's we could go on and on, we had so many laughs (and some tears).

Words are so inadequate at a time like this but our thoughts are with you Val, Charlotte, Tamsin & families. It must be so nice to know how loved Pete was and how much he will be missed by so many.

From: Dave Masterson

Heard the sad news from Terry Heaslip at the beginning of the week, but this is the first opportunity I've had to put my thoughts down.

Dear, dear, it only seems 5 minutes ago but it was the summer of 1970 when I first met Pete, at Dartford FC at the Station Hotel, and later at the wonderful, wonderful Coach House, Farningham. I had just moved down to Kent from North London, and they were my introduction to live folk music. Before that it was listening to Peter, Paul and Mary albums (which are still treasured possessions, I'll have you know!).

Crayfolk in those days were Pete, John Barker (also sadly no longer with us) and Pete Chopin (Wendy – is Chopin still around? Last I heard he was living in Walton).

We embryonic folkies held Pete and co. somewhat in awe. They were central to the folk revival in North Kent, and I remember us following them up to London one night to a gig at the pub in Gloucester Avenue just down from C Sharp House (can't remember the name of the pub) and who did we bump into? Of course, the omnipresent Dave Bryant!

It was watching Pete dancing (and singing) with Hartley Morris on Boxing Day 1973 that made me decide I wanted to dance the Morris, and had many happy years with Hartley as a result. Being with Hartley in the 70's was quite amazing. The side in those days was massive and at one point we had to close the books on membership! The singing in the pubs after dance stands was awesome, and I think it was that experience that gave me my preference for bar sessions/singarounds over formal club settings.

From the posts on this thread it is obvious that Pete, who over the years has engendered a love of folk music and dance in so many people, and is obviously held in great regard, will be greatly missed. A fitting epitaph.

When someone we have known for so long passes suddenly like this, it makes one sit up and think upon the greater mysteries of life. None of us know when our time is to come, so it is an encouragement to live each day to the full and to keep short accounts. As it is written, "Don't let the sun go down on your anger."

Goodbye Streaky, I hope you've found peace, and that we meet again in a better place.

Hello Val

My Mum and Dad (Sue and Eddie White) from Oast Ouse Oppers, Offcumduns and Bishop Gundulfs, wanted to pass on their condolences, as do I. Sue Urwin had been keeping me up to date, and Clare Gray from Offcumduns told us the sad news on Sunday as we all got on a coach to go to Brighton Morris Mens Day of Dance.
We had a great big booige for you and Pete in the rain, soakin wet, in clogs, and just wanted you to know we're thinking of you, sending some north west wishes your way :0)

Eddie especially has been upset by the news having known Pete for longer than i've been alive (and i'm 24!), and had been calling me to check the 'intranet page website thingie' for news whenever he was on the phone to me for updates. He is ill himself at the moment but will attend the send off / suspected knees up that Pete deserves, even if my mum says No!

best wishes

Eddie and Sue White

and Charlotte xx

one of my favourite memories of your lovely dad was when my daughter Samantha was a baby and we would all go to Farningham on a Friday and our babies would be deposited in the room at the back in their carrycots,( including Phil and Kay's baby) you all slept peacefully(wonderful music) and at the end of the evening Pete would hand out the carrycots and joke that we would take home the right baby!I am sure he never made a mistake, but it got a huge laugh!
travel safe home Val,lots of hugs waiting here.

References to nice arses often have two folds....

I think, Kev, Tamsin was pulling our male legs, and suggesting that most male Morris dancers substituted quantity for quality

Dear Tamsin,

the reference to the "nice arse" is two fold. Pete was renown for saying "nice arse" to Gill (from Gundulf) - also, there was - at least one occasion that I saw, an evening when Pete was performing as Slatery, when, in the middle of a number, a particularly nice lady with a very nice bottom, passed by him - in the middle of a verse, Pete stopped singing and growled into his microphone - " Nice arse!" - and then continued performing as if nothing had happened!! She didn't take offence, we all howled with laughter, and Pete, bless him, carried on to complete the number with a wicked glint in is eye and a slightly mishievious grin!!! I shall miss him SO much. Best wishes to you. Take care.

Hi all,

My daughter said something yesterday about Pete that made me smile so i thought i would share it!

She said "Mummy is he the funny one?"
I said " Yes he was very funny but what are you talking about?"
She said "he nicked all the profiteroles did'nt he. We were fighting over them!" I said " Yes thats the one".

This proves it was not just the beer he had a soft spot for! Also that he had an impact on the children around him (even if he did fight them for profiteroles!). Sadly Missed!!!!!

P.S Val,Just receicved a message from Larisa, She knows that you will have a lot to sort out when you get back. She will wait to hear from you. It is not that she does not care but she thinks you need time to grieve and sort things out. She does not want to add any unnecessary pressure at a difficult time. Love you XXXXXX

I would like to thank everyone for all their kind words. I was going to write something about Dad and the stupid and sometimes completely mad things that he has done that will forever make me smile but all words have escaped me. I will miss meeting my Dad at lunch times and always having to have that one more drink before having to get back to work, and my daughter George is going to miss him taking her to the Bingo hall by mistake on the Medway Valley park instead of into the cinema EVERY time during half terms. He has left a big hole and I will miss him every day, as I am sure all of his family and friends will.

Thank you all for your support to myself Charlotte and Val it is much appreciated.

Just to change the subject can someone please point out the nice arse to me.

I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Uncle Pete. While I can't admit to having all of the same memories that my brother has, I do share some of them- Gypsy and Rastus-2 of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen. I play back in my mind Uncle Pete saying my name and there was no-one else who said my name that way. I always felt like I special little girl when I was with him. It was also thanks to him, that I got my 1st girl cousin (no offence Mark, Adrian and Scott)! I wish I could remember more about the house in Crayford- my only memory is falling down the step and cutting my lip! I loved it that Pete and Val brought Nan out to Canada to see us, it was a nice visit.
Val, Charlie and Tam- I would still love for you to come out some time. I can imagine how hard it is for you now and our thoughts are with you all. Please take care of yourselves.

YES muttley Pete was one of the best (as a totally biased person) I have to say he could bring a smile to everybody, you laughed with him because he enjoyed his self whether singing, playing, dancing or just being him, he had no reverence for man nor beast and treated everybody as an equal.
Hell I miss the deaf old git. but was very lucky to have shared part of his life.
looking forward to being back with you all, despite the fact it was 84 out here today with clear blue skys.

Have followed the thread - and not having known Pete personally - have abstained except to offer small comfort at the beginning.

Was saddened to read the 'Obit' prefix today as I thought he was through and brething unaided.

My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends both on the 'Cat and elsewhere; I feel lessened not to have known Pete as if even a tenth of the plaudits to him I have read are true - he was one hell of a person.

Don't mean to sound trite, but God can always use a good singer / player / dancer - it's a shame we have to lose them to achieve it.

God rest Pete and God bless those who survive and love him

Helen and I add our sense of sorrow. Such an umassuming man, he really did not seem to know how good a musician he was. I produced that Crayfolk Live At Farningham LP and sent Pete some 1969 recordings I did of the Crayfolk at The Railway in Dartford not long ago. These recordings have given us years of pleasure and always will. Pete's unaccompanied singing of Spencer the Rover is a wonder, an absolute treasure. A good man, memories of good times.

We got the news while out in Cuba, thanks Gill and Kevin for keeping us informed. Just want to say we are both devastated at the news. We feel we have lost one of the family. We both had a few rum and cokes last night in honour of Pete's memory our very special friend.
Our thoughts are with Val and the family at the moment, sending you our deepest condolences.
Val, big hugs when you get back.
Tony and Sue

Dear Val & family

Josie and I were so sorry to hear about Pete, he was a really good friend good fun and inspired us all, I will never forget St Trinian's at Broadstairs, we will never forget Pete, I'd like to think that a little bit of Pete has rubbed off on us all.

See you soon

Lots of Love

My dear Val,

Jacqui & were shattered when Richard told us the news, we all loved Pete.
He was such a kind, humorous man and a giant of a musician, not bad at the beer consumption either.

It just won't seem the same, the big man leaves a big gap.

At the stand on Saturday we all did it for Pete and the Wedding Party loved it.

All our love and strength to you and your family
Jacqui & Chalky

He is probably jamming with Lonnie Donnigan while a skinny Elvis is learning the new words to Jailhouse Rock.
I always wished I knew Pete back at Farningham and in the 60's folk clubs.
He will be sorely missed for so many reasons.
Ken.

Our deepest concolences on the passing of a great person. I'm sure we all look forward to seeing him again on the other side when we get there.
He is the last man I've heard to sing Cigareets and whusky all the way through.

Love from Linda and Robin and the Woodchurch Morris
