Just back from the Bothy and, no, the fire was out. It was all pleasant enough in a "We've worked out the arrangements and can read the dots", sort of way but there wasn't much life either in patter or song. They may have listened to the old singers, as we keep being told, but I don't know what they've taken from the experience. I find it incredible that touring with Waterson:Carthy hasn't shaken them up even a tad. Everything is just so darned tidy and syrupy. Jim Causley certainly has a distinctive voice and injects personality into his patter but I can't help feeling he's held back by the lack of projection and vocal character from the other two. Nothing seems to have developed organically; it's all too studied and restrained. I remember seeing them at the last National at Sutton Bonington, so they must have been together for at least 3 years, but you'd never guess they were anything other than just starting out. They did go down very well at the club, and it was packed, so it's eminently possible that me and my chums have cloth ears. But you asked... |

From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 Apr 07 - 10:16 AM Interesting, John T, because that was my impression of their CD, and I was told first that I had cloth ears, second that they were ferocious live, and thirdly that they were looking forward to meeting me (so I went and hid). There are performers out there with "it" - I've heard them at Miskin, I've heard them at Tenterden, but they are not getting noted, it seems. |
