Subject: Searching for song
From: GUEST
Date: 23 Apr 07 - 10:48 AM

Years ago I heard a song I think by Tommy Makem (but not sure) that was about a sailor who ended up building a house out of the wood from his wrecked boat. Somewhere in it is the line Annie, darlin Annie ...
Any leads?
Thanks!

Put Darling Annie in the Mudcat SuperSearch box (top left, front page) and see if it is the Peggy Seeger song that Joe Offer added. No wrecked ship in that one tho, just wedding gifts.

The Gordon Bok song is called "Sabin the Woodfitter" and is Sabin here. No Annie in this one, but a good story.
Blessings,
Barbara

"Sabin the Woodfitter" is the one I had in mind, Barbara, thanks. I wonder, Guest Eric, if you might have 2 different songs intertwined in your head? Gordon Bok also sings a song about Gentle Annie.

I have searched Tommy Makem's lyrics site, approx. 200 songs. No mention of this one. Sorry

Thanks for the help - it may be Gentle Annie that I had in mind and I may be thinking of 2 songs!

I have the tune in my head and it still rings as Darlin Annie. The "song" as I remember it had a spoken part as well. Sabin does seem like a similar story though.
Thanks for all the help!
Cheers!
Eric

Try John Warner's "Anderson's Coast" (click), © 1993, which has the chorus:

C----------G------------------C--D
But Ann-ie dear, don't wait for me,
---------C
I fear I shall not return to thee;
---------G-------D-G-------------------D
There's naught to do, but endure my fate,
-----------------C----------------G-D
And watch the moon, the lone-ly moon,
----------C--------------------------G
Light the breakers, on wild Bass Strait.

John's from Australia and recorded this one with Margaret Walters on PITHEAD IN THE FERN.

I believe that Tommy Makem has sung this one as well. I've also heard Gordon Bok sing it.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I wonder if he realized we'd respond here, rather than to the email address he posted in the initial query. Perhaps I'll send him an email reminder...

Thanks to all for trying to find this song. I still have a melody running through my mind that does not match anything submitted so far. Maybe I'm having a senior's moment!
Cheers!
Eric

Eric:
You do realize, I trust, that almost all of "Sabin, the Woodfitter" is spoken, not sung. Only the last four couplets (in the text Barbara's note above would have led you to read) are sung,
beginning with "East Wind's rain and North Wind's clearing..." The rest is all spoken with guitar accompaniment.
The melody you recall may scan properly to those couplets.
    Sandy
