The 1st Shepley Spring Festival is coming up very soon - and looks brill! It's the weekend of May 18th to 20th, and the events are really varied, especially the children's activities.

Hi,

It has a really great bill this year and loads of activities outside the greenfield site as well. I am so looking forward to hearing Peggy Seeger since she and Ewan rarely did festivals and now she lives in America of course. And Belowhead, Hekety, Park Bench Social Club...

I declare an interest, collectors folk will be there offering a range of previously cherished books on folk music, and I am sponsoring the Acoustic Cafe -

A full weekend of events is planned for the Acoustic Cafe in St Paul's Church Hall. A short walk from the main festival site the venue has the Moveable Feast Cafe serving tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes. There is also a real ale bar.

Here in a more intimate setting as well as attending evening concerts you can 'meet' the festival artists or listen to unaccompanied traditional singers throughout the day.

Only four weeks to go and it's all getting a bit hectic at this end. I've got the schools showcase to put together.....Shepley Singers....The Demon Barbers...new North West dance team Silkstone Greens (still need to finish making mi kit...)and my good husband and I are doing a short set together at the acoustic cafe Dave mentions above. (it's only taken us 12 years to get round to that...)

Declaration of interest.

I am a stall holder at Shepley. I am sponsoring the Acoustic Cafe.

I wanted to point out that it's £4.00 to get on the festival site on the Saturday and the Sunday. For that you get Demon Barber Roadshow plus school children or a Mawkin Ceilidh with caller Jenny Reid. That's Saturday.

On Sunday for £4.00 a lunchtime concert 4 Square, Ella Edmondson, Breabach or 422 Ceilidh with 20+ local school children, caller Joey Oliver.

There will be a singaround venue on site - indoors- all weekend and a special breakfast sing at the Acoustic Cafe (village hall) on Saturday morning. I can't imagine anything worse nmyself and I am sponsoring it!!

Sadly I also will miss the Shepley festival this year because from what I can gleam from the threads here so far it's only promoted by sponsors,some booked artists,stall holders and emphasis on childrens events.
I am sure that there is much more to it than this so I would love to hear from regular people who attended the festival last year.
What did you like about the festival and would you go again?
I really want to get a feel about this festival and hopefully change my mind and decide to come to it. So persuade me - please.

Hello Soldier Boy, why don't you just come and see for yourself?

As Dave said, you only have to part with £4 to get onto the site and see what's going on, but that also gets you into the lunchtime concerts and ceilidh. Then if you don't like it, you can go home, but if you do you can upgrade your ticket and stay for the rest of the evening. I suppose it depends on far you would be traveling just to see if you liked it or not......but at least then you'd know for next year!

I'd certainly be going anyway if I wasn't already involved cos last year was brilliant and there are loads of artists that I want to see...(not that I'm gonna have any spare time to do so......)

You should definitely come!

Shepley is a mix of Folk Festival and village carnival.

The village is fully behind the organisers hence the villagers involvement and the childrens events but in every other respect it is a top class folk festival.

The greenfield site has a superb camp site with excellent facilities - plenty of loos and HOT showers.

The performance marquees are roomy and comfortable. Despite last years bad weather there was plenty of shelter for people wanting to escape from the rain.

The beer tent had an all day session running and this year (so I understand) there will be a seperate sing-around tent.

Events in the village hall (a short walk from the main site) are varied with and food and drink available.

I really enjoyed the festival last year and am sad that I won't be able to go this year.

I have been contacted by someone who has bought 2 weekend tickets with camping for the festival who is now unable to go.

Perhaps I'm being more than usually dense but I can't see a timetable for artists on the Shepley website. We can only make one day and live near enough to sleep in us own beds so I'd like to see which day is best to attend. Can someone help?

Hello Glueman, if you click on 'events' in the list on the left the main concerts are listed. Some of the other artists listed are on in the acoustic cafe concerts in St. Pauls church hall or the folk train or various other places! But all the artists for each day are listed there.

If there are any left you can buy em on the gate, but it's probably best to book. I think the choice is individual concert tickets or a whole day ticket/weekend ticket. You can book them through Holmfirth Tourist Information I think. Details are on the website. Can't be more helpful than that I'm afraid as I'm not involved in any of that side of things.

We actually got as far as the end of the road but the weather was just too lousy so we drove on. Hope everyone had a brilliant time despite the rain. We were only planning to do the ground anyway but next year may get there as full weekenders. I shall have a very stiff word with Paul Hudson who told me it would brighten up during the afternoon!

Just got in from the evening gig. Bellowhead were monumental, truly one of the best performances I've ever seen. Ella Edmondson was good but warming the audience was an uphill task on a cold evening. Excellent festival.

Once again an excellent festival wrong to single anyone out I know but Bellowhead where phenomenal.
In praise of the organisation we ended up with some non folkies camping near us one of which was on a different planet to the rest of the world who loved honking the car horn believing it to be a seal. The campsite organisation was brilliant and quietened them down superbly.

Got back this morning - I would echo everything everyone said about the festival including the cold weather which did not make things easy. I must admit I didn't hear the seal imitations - but there were loads of young people who were tremendously well-behaved as far as I could see and that cider at 8% must have been a temptation. Both special beers (Shepley Spring and Shepley Cricket Club) were great - I stuck to those tw0. And at £2.50 per pint - excellent value for money.

Having said that - the organisation was top class, and everyone who was there I am sure will agree that the whole thing is becoming a monumental success.

Unfair to single out any one performance.

Bellowhead. Askews. Bellla Hardy, Demon Barbers. Crucible. Breabach.......go to the website and check the artists. All superb.

That horny little devil in the basque, black stockings and red tutu looked superb, and the girls who were with him looked good too.

Even the veggie food stall was brilliant. And I nearly forgot - the woodfired pizzas were amazing.

Nothing but praise.

I can only echo Keith and Dave's sentiments, not fair (or easy) to pick a best in show, but Bellowhead were the best I've seen them.
I was rather partial to a drop or two of the 'Nettle Thrasher' meself.
