This is on board "Stavros S Niarchos" (which despite its name is owned, registered & run from the UK).

Her sister ship, "Prince William" is currently en-route to the American Sail Training Association's 50th Anniversary celebrations on the Eastern Seaboard of the North American continent, with ports including Charleston (18 May), Wilmington (29 May), Norfolk (9 June), Philadelphia (19 June), Newport Rhode Island (29 June) and Halifax (14 July). Maybe you'll get a chance to see her there, amongst all the other tallships.

I'm pleased to report that there was a huge response to the appeal and that Jo is currently finalising the bits and pieces but she's not said who the performers will be yet. I'm very interested to hear who these adventurous souls are going to be!

Isn't it odd how folk performers are always expected to be grateful for the chance to sing for nothing? If it was anything other than folk, they'd have to pay the performer, not offer the chance to 'sing for your passage'.

I'm sure whoever goes will have a great time, but really . . .

Andrew

Why? Is the passage free for other people? If not, then you get a barter exchanging a boat ticket in exchange for singing. I'd sure do it if I were a lead type of singer...mg

Apparently there's an orientation---

To every two men that graduates,
I'll give wan outfit free,
For two good men on watch at once,
ye never need to see,
Oilskins, me boys, ye'll never want,
carpet slippers made of felt,
I'll dish out to the pair o' you,
and a rope yarn for a belt.

Still, in all, I'd go. It's not a profit-making voyage, it's a
lark and a chance to participate in some living history. You're
not 'singing for your passage' so much as 'getting to sing on a
passage.'

Since a good singer is worth 'ten men on a line' you're not paying
like the rest of the crew. And maybe if you're great, next year
you'll come back as a paid crewmember, a lead chanteyman. Of
course, you'll have to go 'up there' when you don't really feel
like it...

"Where am I to go me Johnny, where am I to go?...
Holy crap, you gotta be kidding me!"

Roger - do I see elsewhere on the net that Stavros Niarchos is due in Cobh over the first weekend in June - during the shanty festival? If so - I'll see you there! I'd love to do the trip - but the dates don't suit, unfortunately.

Regards

Sounds absolutely wonderful Roger.

Any chance you'll be visiting our side of Ireland in the near future? (R.Shannon). I'd say you'd have plenty of musician/singer/dancer punters if Co.Clare's anything to go by!

As a long-time sailor with the STA, I'd love to come, done lots of voyages on their old ships (Sir Winston Churchill and Malcolm Miller) and one on the Stavros S. Niarchos, and enjoyed every minute, but the dates make it a no-go for me.

However I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone, you'll have a great time!

Reminds me I had a similar experience during the Orkney Folk Festival last year when I had a memorable trip (albeit short!) on the Dutch tall ship 'Thalassa' which conveniently called into Stromness while the festival was on. We had wonderful music from local musicians and were invited to help pull the sails up (whilst singing a shanty, of course!).

Sustainable transport at its best!

In fact, I think it's the Prince William which may be calling to Cobh.

hi
We have just been mailed the link for this and it's probably to late, but we are shanty singers and have sung on the Cutty Sark and the Grand Turk. We have been involved in several shanty events around the country and would be intersted in perfoming onboard for the shanty trip. we sing as a duo, and have been performing for some years, we have a large repertoire of ses songs and shanty's.
if we are to late for this time please bear us in mind for the next trip.
best regard
Kerry & Mandy

Have sailed on the Stavros - and sung 'The Last of the Great Whales'

This idea of having singers on board is a fairly new venture - it would seem that it has been successful and is now being extended, so ther may be more opportunities in the future.

To Kerry & Mandy

I think you probably need to contact the organisation direct to express interest in future voyages - don't assume that they will continue looking here. The details to contact them are up in the first post, at the top. There is a name (Jo Wheeler) and a phone number and a website address. I'd send them a letter, a photo and a demo, if you have one. (I'm nothing to do with the organisation, by the way)

"This idea of having singers on board is a fairly new venture"

We-e-e-ell, not strictly so - I've done getting on for 30 voyages and I've taken my own guitar, or used the 'ship's guitar' until heat/cold/moisture excesses/moisture deficiencies destroyed it. And I know quite a number of other performers (including one particular friend of mine who is something of a celebrity and star-turn in the folk world - although he'd hate me for saying it!) who did and still do.

The STA (or Tall Ships Youth Trust, to give it its current title) has always encouraged musicians and singers to sail and perform on board and in port, this seems merely to be a formalisation, in a specific voyage, of something that's always happened on an informal basis. And I can guarantee from my own experiences that anyone who decides to go will definitely receive a warm welcome, and a greal of appreciation.
