Rick..my wooden kazoo, upon examining it, is Padauk, Maple and Walnut...very common combination these days..Padauk is used for LOTS of wooden instruments...like those xylophone things, and an ocarina.

I know where mine came from (a Christmas cracker). So far it goes most places with me where I think I might be allowed to join in. ("I took my kazoo to a party but nobody asked me to play" as the old song might have said!).So far it's come back- no-one has knocked it down my throat! Don't knock it, for those of us who can't play anything else it is a godsend- and has the added benefit in my case of preventing me from singing or (even worse) whistling. A steel comb and the old fashioned shiny lavatory paper used to be OK, but that new soft stuff.... I too love Jesse Fuller, Red McKenzie, Tony Hall of the Spinners etc.

Tony DAVIS I should have said! I was listening to a tape I'd compiled of Cliff Hall's Caribbean songs in the Spinner's reperoire over the wekend which accounted for the gaffe!

Say, Catspaw, I just spent the afternoon making a possum, and the only problem I got now is that no matter how hard I blow up its butt, I can't QUITE make it whistle. Its eyes bug out, but it don't sing.
Yet.
And yes, I carved a slot in it, and punched some holes, and I can tell the potential is there, but the sucker just won't howl. Yet. It just makes this pitiful little moaning noise, like blowing through your thumbs.
I've made flutes, but never a whistle, and this possum and I are going through this till I get it. The bad thing about clay is, it's flexible, but the good thing is, when it don't work, I just pack some more clay in, and try again.
I sure hope you have fun with this.
And, assuming he survives this, you need to tell me where to send him (is your personal mail not working?)
By the way, the way he's made it looks a little more like youre blowing his balls than his butt, hope that isn't a big problem.
Blessings,
Barbara

Barbara, I've tried to make them also, but out of polymer clay. I found a website(I'm not sure the exact address, but I searched dogpile for 'ocarinas' http://www.dogpile.com (cute search engine.)
But I've always wanted to make them out of polymer clay, but it hasn't worked yet. I found a page where someone has made them out of polymer clay, so now I know it's possible!

Jen, back to cleaning. Break is over! ;-)

Reggie's reference people were friendly and helpful and I haven't checked out the websites they gave me yet. Getting a clean edge and the right slant on the fipple seems to be the biggest part of the trick.
Ooo 'paw you're gonna love this. And I hear ya, Bert.
Only catch is, the person costuming Wizard of Oz just got scheduled for some emergency surgery, and she asked me yesterday to take over (cast 52, show opens second week May, and about 2/3 of the costumes are done).
So, if you all can just keep your fantasies live for a while (Alistair will have no trouble with this, I can tell) and not get your shorts in a wad, I'll have more time to make more of these in about 5 weeks.
Hang on to your dreams.
Blessings,
Barbara
And catspaw, I won't know for sure if you get shipped this one until next week when it gets fired.

This was really an interesting thread as it wove its way about wasn't it? Its also the birthplace of Cleigh O'Possum and odlly enough I had (or rather CLEIGH had) just mentioned this very thread in another one called, "BS:Don't miss it."

Thanks Shambles for the refresh.

Not too sure that it was my kazoo. It was so old, it was probably Jesse Fuller's? There were a lot of plectrums there too.

Yes this thread was a bit of fun. I remenbered the kazoos but I had forgotten that it was Cleigh's birthplace. But I refreshed it anyway. Don't know what that says?

The fun is good but it's not really worth losing good contributors over is it?. It's just getting the balance right, I guess?

Can we declare Peace?

There was a band from the Chapel Hill area called Hot Shandy who did some fine 3-part Kazooing about 20 years ago. I think I still have an album somewhere. I keep a kazoo in my guitar case, but I haven't played it in a LONG time. Used to show off playing " Yakkity Sax" with it. It can be fun

Hands up any banjo player who's been asked to play duelling banjos by some guitar player who wants to get the girl! Well after many such requests Geoff the Duck decided drastic measures were needed and now if asked if he plays said tune says yes and does so solo on banjo and kazoo. A treat not to be missed!!!!

Has anyone considered the problems of keeping a kazoo in your mouth whilst playing another instrument. Obviously the one man bands with the "Mouth Truss" do not have a problem because they do not actually need to hold it. I find that the grip you need to exert to prevent it flying across the room acn make my jaw ache. Plastic kazoos tend to disintegrate with bite marks at the end. My metal kazoo is definitely slightly compressed. I also wrap plastic electrical insulating tape around the mouthpiece as it otherwise tended to slip out from between the teeth. Any better suggestions? Quack!

Thread creep, for those who remember...

" While there is a lower class, I am in it; Where there is a criminal element, I am of it; While there is a soul in prison, I am not free; While there is a Tigers Game, I am in the bleachers." EUGENE V. DEBS

until this year, kazoo impressarios by the thousands converged on Tiger Stadium in Detroit, for the annual Eugene V. Debs Kazoo night...more than an occasional celebrity, many Detroit area lawyers, politicos and ne'er do wells of every persuasion, were together in the bleachers to play old labor songs and raise hijinx.

This year the whole thing came to an end with the move to Comerica Park...Deb's don't do Luxury boxes...look for us in Toledo, or Lansing, or Boston before they close that old landmark...

So I'm reading this thread entitled "don't miss this" and I hit this blue clicky thing entitled "Where do all the kazoos go?" and it sends me down a worm-hole in Time and Space (probably not entirely unlike the worm-hole in Time and Space where the single socks go) and I end up in this thread in the past and I'm reading it and it and suddenly I come upon Spaw's post referring to the don't miss it thread that I started out in as if that were in the past(which at that point it was) and I get (or got "past tense") confused as to which is in the past and there is a fiendish part of me that wishes I knew how to make a blue clicky thing that would send one back to the "don't miss this" thread thereby forming a sort of Mobius thread strip back and forth between the two threads and part of me is glad that I can't be cause if you can lose a kazoo or a pick or a single sock in a little worm-hole in Time and Space then the Mudcat Mobius Thread Strip could probably eat up a whole guitar and I just realized that this is one really long sentence and I'm not sure where all the periods have gone but if I had to guess, I'd say there probably with the kazoos and lost socks and that is about all I have to say on the subject because, to tell the truth, I've forgotten what the topic was to begin with and now I finally understand what you mean when you say thread creep and there is a sick little part of me which is related to the part of me who liked the idea of the Mudcat Mobius Thread Strip and that part of me isn't the least bit sorry about starting to thread creep because if it's the worst thing I do today then I'm doing alright and if it's not the worst thing I do today then it's not really worth getting upset over so I'll leave you now............................

Rich, I really enjoy your stuff and that single sentence probably qualifies as the longest, single sentence in Mudcat History and brings new meaning to the words run-on sentence and even though I got a big laugh and gawd knows you have a funny point there, it is also a problem though not a big one but I mention it because it drives me nuts which I admit is a very short trip and can be argued that that state already exists because its a known fact that I live out where the buses don't run so it doesn't really matter in the least and as you said if its the biggest thing that troubles me today than its a minor point to be sure but I wish ta hell you shoten up that freakin' handle of yours a little bit because every time you post we all know it because the posters list at the top of the thread becomes longer than the thread itself and although I value the thoughts you express and the thought you express as a stupid bodhran player who doesn't know any better could be the truth because you possibly don't and even if you do I wanted to say that that elongated posters list drives me nuts which as I said ain't a big deal but I thought that I'd mention it again as I have before and since you keep posting as a guest although you are certainly a long time poster and I consider you a member, I'd be much obliged if you'd chop a few words or something out of that thing you use as a name although I am speaking only for myself and don't pretend to voice an opinion for anyone else in the place and like I said before, I like you and its not important and since you are not a member I couldn't put this in a Personal Message even though I think you really are a member, just a member sans cookie and in that case I hope you get my message and take no offense from it in any way and I only have one other request and that would be to help me out and tell ne how in the hell to stop writing in this sentence since the habit seems to have set in rather quickly and I remember there is supposed to be some punctuation device to stop this and I think I now see it over here to the lower right so I'll say thanks for your time and understanding in my request for you to shorten up so to speak....................AAHHHHHH.

Spaw, I'm not counting words to see which of us posted the longest sentence in mudcat history although it would be a feather in either of our caps to be able to claim such a feat but since I don't own a computer and rely on borrowed computers (hence the lack of a cookie) and therefore remain a GUEST (even though you consider me a member and I appreciate) that I think we could both be winners if I took the title of longest sentence posted by a guest and you take the title of longest sentence posted by a regular member and that way we bother can claim our shallow, meaningless victories and not have to count words because I am only a bodhrán player who only has ten fingeers and ten toes to count and then I would be lost so if we can agree to leave it a t that then I can agree to post under a shorter handle at least some of the time unless I really have to admit that I don't know much on a given thread in which case I will be forced to revert back to my old handle but only in extreme conditions and then you can blow your oppossum at me if you feel angry and while you have it out, I think the Mudcat Mobius Thread Strip would be a great name for a reel and since I don't play a melody instrument as of yet (and my mandolin progress is very slow at best) I think you should write the first reel ever specifically intended on an oppossum-shaped ocarina and name it as such and I'd love to hear ir sometime but I am on my way to the Pittsburgh Irish festival (although it's not worth the trip) so I'll have to hear it at another time but before I go I must say I'm glad it was you who posted on top of my rambling run-on post first because I always enjoy your posts and since you can't send me a private message on the mudcat you can reach me at rrayburg@hotmail.com if you feel the need to and now I must leave but not before first typing the word KAZOO because that is what this thread is about and I want to stick to the topic because otherwise I'd be a thread creep and I wouldn't want to do that twice in one day and that's all for now.

Slán agat,

Rich
