Mudcatters didn't let me down the last time I needed a French translation, so I'll try it again. My band plays a French-Canadian tune called "La Ringuette" So, wha't a ringuette? A small ringu?
The Google translation service gave me "The Ringuette". Ha ha. Those folks at Google are a riot.

Hang tough. There are a number of French speakers/readers here, including Mrrzy, Amos, katlaughing- and I'm sure there are lots more.

I think it is Ringette.

Ringette is a team sport played on an ice surface. It was introduced by Sam Jacks in North Bay, Ontario in 1963. It is played internationally in such countries as Canada, Finland, France, and the United States.

It is also a surname like Dana Ringuette.

Could you post the words to the song--or, a link to the song lyrics?

No lyrics, it's a fiddle tune. I think Dickey may have provided the answer, it's probably named for a woman with the last name of Ringuette. (The spelling is definately Ringuette.).

The Wikipedia translation from the French Wiki article about it is pretty funny, but, yes, it seems to be an ice game similar to hockey, though I'll ask my Rog when he gets home, tonight.

(Ebbie, thanks for the vote of confidence, but I only read/speak a very, very tiny amount of French. It's my Rog who was raised bilingual, specifically Canadian French "a La France" ya know? It's our last name!**bg**)

The game is sort of half-way between floor-hocky and ice-hockey. It is played on ice, the (female) players wear skates. The players use bladeless sticks, like broomsticks or broken hockey-sticks, and the "puck" is a flat ring; the players put their sticks into the center of the ring to move it.

Lately ringuette has been losing ground to women's hockey, especially since the success of the Canadian women's team at Salt Lake City.

Whether the title of tune is referring to the game, I don't know. A woman with the surname of Ringuette who has achieved some kind of prominence might be called "La" Ringuette. No doubt there is some other meaning for the word as well.

The name also suggests that it may be a type of dance though I haven't been able to find any references to that. I'll keep looking.
