As a Canadian I perceive them as good friends and neighbours (neighbors?)who are always willing to do us a favour(favor?). They have laboured (labored?) to improve life on this planet but they can't spell, eh?

Well, we Americans can be obnoxious - especially Americans with any degree of power. Most average Americans aren't obnoxious. Well, not ALL the time. Not unless they're driving. I have to shift into Canadian driving mode when I'm up there. You know: don't tailgate people in the passing lane you want to pass because you can trust they'll move over when they can. Let people in front of you to pass even when you're going faster. Make room for folks. That kind of stuff. You know - common decency.

This really happened once: some annoying, impatient person tried to crawl up my tailpipe for a few blocks, pulled into the same lot as I, went into the same store I was going into. I went in, thinking to say something brief and honest about how I felt, and got the, "Oh hi, there. It's a beautiful day, isn't it? I have to write a check - do you want to go ahead of me in line?" Why are people like overly caffeinated axe murderers in cars and all sweet out of them?

No, my non-American friends - we do NOT all own handguns and run around shooting at each other all the time. Most of us have cars, though.

Jerry, I am at this time visiting with family in the USA. The driving here is more agressive than at home but there as well things are changing. More tailgating, running yellow lights, and yapping on cellphones.

Depends on which part of the States Sandy. Up here in Maine it's still relatively civilised, in comparison to driving in the South of England, when I go back for visits a couple of times a year.

I had a young woman come from the left lane, cross the center lane and cut me off in the right lane, missed me by a foot or so, then she ran a red light and pulled into the grocery store parking lot.
I wanted to ream her, but instead I called the police and complained.
Damn, I wish I could holler!

D'ye know what's really funny about this thread?

With only a couple of exceptions (and one or two incomprehensibles), you are ALL right.

The American people are saintly, evil, well mannered, ignorant, generous, greedy, arrogant, mild, passionate, calculating, and humble.

So are the people of any other nation on the face of this earth.

As for what they have done for us, They've produced both the best, and worst, and passed them on. So just about the same as we've done for them.

Ask a Bostonian what his ancestors thought of tea.

And, speaking of being touchy, why do you not see the irony in my offering John Fitzgerald Kennedy back at you?

Hey Kendall--Some of Benny Hill is great stuff--particularly when he lampoons TV or ads--which he often does. And I have nothing against double entendres. On a US sitcom the vulgarity never leaves the locker room stage. Benny is literate. It's an improvement. I'm surprised you can't tell the difference.

How 'bout them Beatles? Didn't they get their inspiration from black musicians from the US? The whole British Invasion was predicated on early rock and roll from the Fifties. To say nothing of the "Skiffle" movement and Lonnie Donegan stealing Leadbelly's licks.

Even Carnaby Street reflected the dress of the early "hippie" community of San Francisco.

We even went so far as to support Andrew Lloyd-Weber and for this abuse we should easilly get a medal.

Musically: In the early fifties, you had nothing, and I mean zilch.
In America in the mid-fifties a balloon burst and it took you eight years of mad (copy and cover) that is, until the boys in Liverpool
learned how to do it from listening day-in-day-out to the American records, they emulated. Now, as per usual, they act as if it's theirs.
Also Messrs Donegan & McDavitt hijacked blues & traditional Americana
and called it "Skiffle". After Lonnie Donegan ran out of Woody Guthrie,Leadbelly and various old "coloured classics", he recorded his own wonderful hits like,"My old man's a dustman"--"Does your chewing gum lose it's flavour"---------From the sublime to the Shit.
   And this is only music....................

A way of speaking English that anyone who speaks English can understand. (In contrast, for me at least, half the mystery in Mystery Theater is trying to figure out what the characters are saying.)Of course, most major corporations have figured out that it us sometimes to their advantage to connect you with someone who speaks English that no one can understand.

It's interesting that some American advertising agencies and television documentary programs have decided that having the message narrated by someone with a pronounced English accent will give it more... panache? Credibility?.... *shrug* (no one still knows what accent that GEICO gecko is supposed to be)

And if they can find someone with really jolly, eccentric delivery where every phrase is emphasized like they were chewing toffee and trying to read Chaucer simultaneously, all the better.

Over here, it goes further Bill. Call centres located in The North East have been all the rage for years because some clever sod worked out that the regional accent was one we all trust. No call centres in Wolverhampton for the same reason.

I thought it was an abundance of available Geordies but then, what do I know?

Back to the thread. Americans gave us greasy chicken served in a bucket.

Ahhh... there it is!

I suppose that any country which is both physically large and influential will inevitably become a target of some sort. If it ain't Congress & guns, it's greasy chicken. Greasy chicken may be the biggest danger... have you seen the obesity reports?

Sorry, gnu. Here in southeastern Alaska we are frequently disturbed by the actions of some Canadian companies and their seeming disregard for their neighbors.

Some years ago a Canadian mining company spent millions and a dozen years exploring and preparing to reopen a large tunnel mine operation. We- people who were concerned by their planned tailings pond and the tons of cyanide that were to be barged daily through our waters, among other things - got that stopped. For the time being.

Currently we in Alaska are disturbed by the latest disastrous breach/spill at Mount Polley that dumped toxic tailings into the salmon waters of the Fraser river, knowing that the same company that built their containment walls is hired to do the same at their projected Tulsequah Chief Mine on the Taku River shared by Alaska. A spill there would have an immediate impact on Alaska's salmon runs.

One of the great celebrations of the intertangled web of dysfunction that is the great relationship across the pond:

Wendy: My father was in the Secret Service, Mr. Manfredjensenjen, and I happen to know perfectly well that you do not keep the general public informed when you are debriefing KGB in a safe house.

Otto: Oh you don't?

Wendy: Not unless you're congenitally insane or irretrievably stupid, no.

Otto: Don't call me stupid.

Wendy: Why on Earth not?

Otto: Oh, you English are *so* superior, aren't you? Well, would you like to know what you'd be without us, the good ol' U.S. of A. to protect you? I'll tell you. The smallest fucking province in the Russian Empire, that's what! So don't call me stupid, lady. Just thank me.

Wendy: Well, *thank* you for popping in and protecting us.

Otto: If it wasn't for us, you'd all be speaking *German!* Singing "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles..."

When I was in high school, the bio teacher, who was an English woman, told an Irish joke in class. There were six girls in my class with Irish surnames. It was a stupid, mean thoughtless thing to do.

I found a St. Patrick's Day card that declared the recipient an "Honorary Irishman" because he or she had, "Courage, wit, humor and just a bit of blarney." The bio teacher had none of these qualities, but I bought the card for her and had most of the class sign it.

A couple of girls tried to stop me from giving it to her FOR FEAR OF HURTING HER FEELINGS.

I've been watching some British sitcom that stars Ian McKellan and Derek Jacoby as a gay couple. Talk about sticky! Also predictable, with plots straight out of "I Love Lucy". How can the BBC waste two good actors like that?

What America did for England, and Europe in general, was discover the simple truth that there is no logical reason why an hereditary noble, or "gentle" class should exist, and have rights and privileges that the common people are denied.

Now we appear to have forgotten this fact ourselves. As we all say on the Internet, WTF?

Assuming "Us" is the UK, I don't know and have other things in life to think about. I also don't concern myself too much with what the UK has done for "Us."

Pass the gravy, the haggis, the plum pudding, the poached possum, the Tex-Mex chili, chitlins or cupcakes, vegan or not - I don't give a rat's *ss as long as you join me on the porch to make some good music about the lives of people that we can all participate in, be it with instrument, voice, dance, toe tapping, or a smile and a head nodding in time.
