It seems to me that so many things come together with this performance. Dave - looking marvelous, and singing in that lovely, unaffected English voice. A wonderful song. Richard Thompson standing on the threshold of a glittering career. Fantastic stuff.

Nah, this is the clip with it's incredibly funny intro about the incompetence of army helicopter pilots:

Now Be Thankful

Sadly, I suspect that a lot of people might not even appreciate that there had been a mistake in your first posting Countess ! :-(

Now be thankful for good things below, SS, including the ability to remove greengrocers' apostrophes.

Isn't Swarb's diction brilliant?

Nah, Countess. Where's your soul! The vivid quality and colours, in the clip that I linked to, are some much part of the experience!

Erm. it's the same footage. With the intro edited off. Shot in Somerset, 1970.
The song is a Thompson/Swarbrick collaboration which RT performs alone on Watching The Dark.

Countess: I think you're right. But, until I checked your link, I could have sworn the one I posted was a sharper more vivid print.

The Now Be Thankful video was actually filmed in Maidstone, Kent. There's also a second video, featuring Fairport playing Sir Patrick Spens, from the same gig

Now Be Thankful.

I was at the Bath gig and seem to remember the helicopters (still, it was 37 years ago. . .)
But if both videos were made during the same set there must have been some rather extensive onstage costume changes. They're all dressed completely differently.

It all comes from a film made in 1970 featuring Fairport and Matthews Southern Comfort at the Maidstone fiesta on the 5th July 1970 and was narrated by John Peel. It was originally released as a support film to Pink Floyds 'Live at Pompeii'
It was released as a limited edition video and sometimes crops up on Ebay. Other attractions at the fiesta (not on the film!)were the Blue Eagles Army Helicopter Team, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the PG Tips Chimps, the whole event being opened by actor Paul Temple.
Fairport played The Lark in the Morning Medley, Sir Patrick Spens, Now Be Thankful, Flatback Caper and Jenny's Chickens/The Mason's Apron.
Matthews SC played My Front Pages and Southern Comfort (sung by a very young Iain Matthews) . Well worth a view if you can get hold of a copy.
