Last I heard she was in Greenwich ;-]

At least the new name has relevance to the pub's location, so it seems fair to give it a go.

It used to be called the Station Inn before the Tap & Spile, I believe.

I think it was called the Station Inn before the Cutty Sark, which was before the Tap and Spile. ( I am prepared to stand corrected:-))

When I first got to Whitby Folk Week (1981) the pub was called the Cutty Sark, and was a nice enough, but fairly ordinary pub with nice enough but fairly ordinary beer. I can't recall for certain which brewery it was tied to, possibly Camerons, but It is a long time ago now. The decor was carpets, wallpaper and a single choice of beer.
In the early 1980s a few innovative landlords across the country came up with the idea of giving beer drinkers a choice not linked to ONE breaery. The Fighting Cock in Bradford (formerly the Preston Hotel) was one of the first of these. These were totally independent and as decor cvhose to go for the original wooden floor and a clean but basic decor, nothing fancy.
When they had proved that this idea was popular, a number of bigger organisations copied the idea but as a chain of pubs all branded in basically the same way. The Tap and Spile chain was one of these.
Since that time, the "chain"was bought and sold between brewery and "pub owning company" and in the process the freedom to select their own choice of beer which the licensee originally had, became more and more restricted to an OFFICIAL LIST provided by the "COMPANY". Finally the chain was split up by the accountants, with many of the pubs sold off completely. Some were leased to the occupiers. At this point many of the pubs which had been Tap & Spiles changed their name and image. Other landlords/ladies decided to keep the name and the "branding" as it suited the type of customer they wished to encourage.

Back to Whitby. The new management seem to want to keep going the same kind of music which made itself at home in the Tap, but they also intend to alter other aspects of the pub, type and scale of food served, for instance. Changes to the decor have been fairly subtle, but they presumably feel that what the will be offering is different enough from the Tap & Spile brand image that the name is no longer appropriate. It makes sense that a new name goes with a "new" pub.
What they haven't done is turned it back into the style or type of pub which the old Cutty Sark was. If they had just reverted to how it was then, it might make sense to go back to being "the Cutty" but they are going for something diferent from both pubs.
I am told that the pub WAS originally called The Station, hardly surprising as it is directly opposite the railway station. I suspect the name probably got changed after Beeching gutted the rail network.
It therefore is a pretty obvious choice as new name for the pub.
Quack!
Geoff the Duck.

Didn't spot those typing errors before I posted. Spotted a load of others though.
By the way, it was me who suggested a new thread, the old Tap & Spile one was getting very long and frankly most of it was irrelevant to the pub under new management and new name. I just thought a fresh start would be appropriate.
Quack!
Geoff.

There's a few boozers called the Tap and Spile up in North East Yorks - there's certainly one in Guisborough - I wonder if they belong to a little chain."They" generally bought pubs which were not doing very well - and put in real ales.
The Cutty Sark and many many others were not welcoming to folkies in the 70's / 80's until they had a rethink and realised how much the folkies were spending. Also in those days, money was tight in Whitby
Geoff has got me there - usually I can remember which pub sold what -so I'll not doubt his Camerons, but it could have been Sam Shits or Whitbread , but let's go with Camerons.
Btw , Butcher Beeching didn't get Whitby - there has always been a timetabled / scheduled journey between Middlesbrough and Whitby and what a great little journey it is once you get out of the Boro.
I say THAT with intimimate knowledge of the Boro - so no knocking too much please !
Anyhow the Station is !!!!

The Fat Ox at Whitley Bay (My now weektime home) is a Tap and Spile that seems to have reverted. I can't remember what beer was sold at the Cutty either. Can't see it being either Camerons or Sam Smiths seeing as they are both breweries are still well represented in Whitby. Could have been I suppose if it wasn't doiing well but it was always heaving when I went to the festival in the 80's.

Cameron got a foothold in the North Yorkshire region by buying a Malton Brewery (I think it was Rose's) that's why there was a large contingent of Camerons Pubs in Whitby. Camerons then went through a colourfull array of owners after the Cameron family sold it - Elerman Lines and eventually to the corrupt Slater Walker group who promptly assett stripped sold off pubs started cahins like Tap and Spile before the rump of the company being sold to Wolverhampton and Dudley who when under threat by the Stock market sold it off to Castle Eden which in itself was a management buyout from Whitbread.

I'm sure the Elsinore was still selling Camerons Strong Arm when I was in Whitby last year. So who owns them now?

Camerons are still owned by Castle Eden but at least they still brew in Hartlepool. They could have been taken over by Gr**ne K*ng and the brewery immediately closed down like Hardys & Hansons in Nottingham (and Morlands, and all the rest)

As for the Station Inn - might get more business now the North York Moors Railway has got the go-ahead to run regular steam into Whitby. Many gricers seem also to be folkies - after all why not be COMPLETELY unfashionable?

Prior to being the Tap & Spile the Cutty was a camerons house
Prior to being the Cutty which was built in 1932 on the site of what was once Jutland Cottage and a wharehouse - the pub was actually below Jutland Cottage and was called The Railway Inn.
There was a fire which destroyed the original buildings and the Cutty was built as is.

I'm afraid Butcher Beeching did get the line THROUGH Whitby, Betsy. When I was in short trousers, our church choir used to spend a couple of weeks at a Christian camp in Staithes - and we got there on a train from Scarborough via Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby and Hinderwell and other places with exotic names. An amazing route which didn't exactly hug the coast, but seemed to flirt with it!

All gone now

Badge?? Everyone is welcome in our pub, folkies, goths, musicians of all types, young, old, locals and tourists, the more the merrier!

Although Andrew has worked here for a while, I have never experienced a Moor and Coast/Folk Week here before (except for working in the Shambles, different feel) so I am looking forward to meeting you all, and getting to know you. Just a couple of changes you might be interested in - we are open at 10am daily for drinks, and over Moor and Coast will be closing at 2am(Fri and Sat)!

Looking forward to meeting you all,

I'm off to the Moor and Coast festival tomorrow! but I can't figure out from google etc just where the festival office in the station inn is. From this thread it seems that the staion inn is opposite the train station--is that right/ And that's where the festival office is??
And is the concert on the grand turk really in a ship?! If anyone knows, I'd be very grateful for a reply (I figure e-mailing the organizers mid-fest isn't exactly practical..) Thanks. :)

The Station Inn is (almost) opposite the station - easy to find. The festival office is usually in the room on the left as you enter the pub.

The grand Turk is indeed a ship, moored near to the station and the pub; a reconstruction of a sailing vessel; some other 'catter will give you a more detailed description. A grand venue for a session.

Just to say had a great weekend based in the Railway - my only comment would be that the 'inmates', especially those with instruments could try to make some space for other people trying to get into the room i.e. sometimes it looks full when it isn't really.
Apart from that thanks to all the staff for a great weekend.

The problem of space in sessions (in general) is that often musicians have several big instruments, all with cases that take up more space.

There is always a dilemma regarding cases, however if you consider that some of these instruments cost several thousand quid it understandable that the owners want nice solid cases to put them in.

The Grand Turk--what an amazing place for a concert ( not to mention the fact that all the singers and players were terrific)....I'll certainly be at Folk Week, in fact, one of my ulterior motives for going to the Moor & Coast fest was to find a cheaper B&B for August.

Unfortunately I'm still too much of a beginner to join in a tune session in a pub. Hey--could anyone suggest three old favourite tunes that get played in sessions that I could learn on the mandolin before August??

Like most people in this thread I have enjoyed many of the sessions in the Station Inn - it's just a shame that they now have to resort to playing muzak during the day!

Another great time at the Station! Why are we still calling it the tap and spile though on this thread? Nice to see the same staff as last year, not sure about the pierceed neck though!!?

I'd wondered whether to put up a Station thread not knowing there was one here.
Wondered indeed whether to keep Jude's excellent singarounds a secret for those who know.
Quality has built on quality over the years and The Station is certainly my first recourse at Whitby.
As to large instruments obviously if everyone brought a guitar that would be difficult and usually I defer to voice alone; but there was room this year at times for instruments and I wouldn't like to lose the variety.
