Subject: RE: BS: Belfast accents From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 07 May 07 - 01:28 PM Oooh, Tyrone Among the Bushes has been heard from.*G* "Do you know that country people in the north regard Belfast people as know-alls." And rightly so. Alison, I love the 'aitch'- 'ah' response. Brilliant! As regards the 'coort'....enny time yer reddy, big girl; gethemaffye! Seamus |
Subject: RE: BS: Belfast accents From: MartinRyan Date: 07 May 07 - 03:19 PM Seamus, I'm afraid the other lot have picked up a version of "for the kingdom the power and the glory etc." - so you haven't a prayer! Regards p.s. Great thread BTW - even if much of it is about dialect rather than accent. |
Subject: RE: BS: Belfast accents From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 07 May 07 - 05:39 PM Martin I think you may be referring to the Our Father in the Mass. I don't think the 'normal' praying of it has the "For thine.." addendum. At least, not on the Falls. Ach, away on wi' yez! Seamus |
Subject: RE: BS: Belfast accents From: MartinRyan Date: 07 May 07 - 06:08 PM Yes, Seamus - I was thinking of the Mass version, indeed. Occasional appearances in the church choir is the extent of my religious observance these days.. Regards |

Subject: RE: BS: Belfast accents From: ard mhacha Date: 10 May 07 - 05:04 AM The boul Seamus, I am in the notion of taking the odd wee dander at this time of the year, how`s wor Jimmy C, I was reading a letter in todays Irish News from someone in the Glens and he was whaling into the Belfast GAA teams as the reason for Antrims pathetic record in our native games, he reckons while the `McCooeys` are in charge they couldn`t bate `My Aunt Jane`. |
Subject: RE: BS: Belfast accents From: Jimmy C Date: 10 May 07 - 10:43 AM Ard mhacha Unfortunately that is true, but I suspect that if the Glensmen and indeed any county in Ireland had to put with over 30 years of bombings, shootings etc on their doorstep the level of football and hurling would also have declined in those areas. Now that peace is here to stay(hopefully) there will be a great improvement in the Belfast area athletes. I personally believe that Antrim football teams were better when they picked a bunch of guys from the bottom of the Springfield road, instead they try to pick players from as many clubs as possible, so that all areas are represented. Hurling (the better and classier game) is a diferent kettle of fish. The children in the glens are born with a hurl in one hand and a sliothar in the other. - So long as the gaelic games are being played then we are all winners. I can't wait to see an All-Ireland champion Antrim team consisting of both taigs and prods. That will be a day for celebration. I know it will be a long long wait, but we can always hope, |
