Subject: BS: UK weather reports are rubbish!

I'm sitting in Kent under heavy cloud with a chill wind whipping across the garden. Today is supposed to be sunny with temperatures of 20C at least. I know this, because a couple of days ago that is what the UK Met office told me. Even yesterday, the local weather forecast for Kent said that any cloud would quickly burn off, the wind would drop and we'd have a lovely warm day! One of the redtop newspapers yesterday said that Bank Holiday Monday will be a scorcher and the roads to the coast will be jammed with holidaymakers. Today we learn that heavy rain is now forecast for the whole of the UK! The Met office have supercomputers capable of millions of calculations per second, and yet they always get it wrong!! Best way to tell the weather is to stick your head out of the window in the morning - and it doesn't cost a penny! I could do a better job of forecasting the weather with a piece of seaweed and a pine cone - think I'll offer my services to that useless bunch in Bracknell!

I think I could be a weatherman in most parts of eastern Europe. Today's forcast...rain and windy, tomorrow's forcast...rain and windy, forcast for the next 2 weeks...rain and windy. See, no problem.

Check that, meant Western Europe, not Eastern Europe. I mean, you don't get called the Emerald Isle for nothing, right.

No wet and wind so far, but not that warm either.

Plenty of wind here, but that's inside the house, not outside.

It's still grey and significantly cooler today. Mayhap we'll get some rain after all!

"I mean, you don't get called the Emerald Isle for nothing, right."

Am I missing something here? According to my UK Atlas, Kent is in England, at the bottom right-hand corner as you look at it.

Grey and cold in Lincs. So much for a lovely walk through the bluebell woods tomorrow...

Ruth, wrap up warm and go anyway, you might be able to enjoy the bluebells without having to share them with hordes of other people.

I enjoyed my bluebells, even though most of them came up pink... they are all over now, it's been too hot for them.

Hey, haven't you guys had a great spring up to now?--that's what our UK friends tell us. Sunny and 60's--70's? No?

When I first started work in the early '60s there was an old gardener (in his 80's) Who claimed his forecast was never wrong: 'Sunshine and showers in places'.

Up here in (Sunny at the moment) Morecambe we have our own personalised weather system which the Met Office have never been able to figure - I tend to look to the tides and the previous evening's sunset or lack of and then have a quick check of the old seaweed - it doesn't work of course but its as reliable as any other mans of prediction as far as I can tell!!
The best way to tell what the weathers going to do is ask a fisherman or farmer they've usually got a good idea - though I suspect thats not much use for the townies amongst us!

Ron, it depends entirely on your idea of nice. If you mean unbroken sunshine and clear skies, then yes it was nice. If you're trying to grow crops then it was bloody horrible...

Certainly in London, we've not had more than 10 minutes of gentle precipitation since March 18th. There were no April showers. We had enough rainfall to move the dust around, nowhere near enough to soak the earth, or even make a mark on the gauges. I've never had to water my garden in April before this year, but had I not done so, I'd be looking out over a wasted desert come August.

We actually need at least a week of steady rain to get things back on track.

I thought that in most of the UK "sunny" meant just that you could tell there was a sun up there - somewhere. Sort of like Seattle.
