Subject: Goodbye from The Villan From: Rasener Date: 07 May 07 - 04:42 PM I have decided to leave Mudcat. I a moving to a different music forum. It is geared to Uk users and is a UK Folk and Acoustic Music Forum. I am fed up with having to deal with people such as Countess Richard and Richard Bridge. There is without doubt, no control over flaming on Mudcat and that is a shame. Apart from the odd person, I have enjoyed my stay at Mudcat very much and it is with sadness that I am taking this action. However until such times as their is more control over what members can do and say, I will stay away. Many thnks to the moderators who do there best to control the forum. Maybe some of the very nice mudcatters who I have got to know will come over to this forum and strike up some nice and friendly chats. I do hope so. The forum is http://www.talkawhile.co.uk/ The rules are >> We were initially brought together by Fairport Convention and the Cropredy Festival, but have expanded to cover many artists and festivals. It's a lively and welcoming forum, with about 1000 readers every day. We have a great motto "It's nice to be nice". If you are a 'newbie' you will be welcomed and encouraged to post. The board is moderated, but we don't censor peoples views, only really bad behavior, such as personal attacks. When registering please remember that all bulletin boards have problems with people being disruptive, which is why we are very wary of people who seek anonymity. We encourage people to use their true identity and register from a permanent email address (not Hotmail, Yahoo, gmail or similar). If you use an obviously false name or register from a free email service, your access to the boards features will be restricted, until we get to know you. If it's both, it will be rejected. I could list a load of rules, but basically the boards motto is "It's nice to be nice". << |

Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: GUEST,Warwick Slade Date: 07 May 07 - 04:52 PM This talkawhile sounds good with no false names! I guess Mr T Villan is on your electoral role. Good luck |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: GUEST,John Robinson Date: 07 May 07 - 04:55 PM Wise decision Les. See you over there! |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Georgiansilver Date: 07 May 07 - 05:01 PM Think I might join you in view of recent libellous remarks made about me by the Countess. Lot of nice people on here but a few not so nice. Best wishes. Mike. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: jacqui.c Date: 07 May 07 - 05:06 PM Sorry to see you go Les - I'll catch up with you when I'm next in the UK. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: M.Ted Date: 07 May 07 - 05:07 PM The motto is "It's nice to be nice."?--Good to know you'll be getting intellectual depth as well. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Rasener Date: 07 May 07 - 05:09 PM I forgot to add You register first and receive an e-mail and then before you can login and start using the forum, your request will be reviewed and approved. When this happens, you will receive another email from this address. I am now a member and registered in my own name - Les Worrall Thanks for those who have posted already. See some of you over there. Jacqui you know you will be very welcome and treated with the utmost courtesy. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Jim Lad Date: 07 May 07 - 05:15 PM I'll pop in if you don't mind but I can't blog with my proper name. It would really tie things up for those, looking for my web-site. Having said that: Your submissions are usually friendly & informative. This is probably the first instance, I have seen where you've maybe crossed the line yourself. An olive branch to the two you've mentioned, wouldn't be a bad idea. Go Celtic! Cheers! Jim |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Herga Kitty Date: 07 May 07 - 05:15 PM Les - sorry you've decided to leave. The people you've cited as reasons for going are based in the UK (well, SE England, actually), so not a reason for leaving an international forum for an English one. Best wishes, and hope to bump into you at a festival soon. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: breezy Date: 07 May 07 - 05:17 PM Knew you'ld be back Les, welcome chum, so how did George do for you? |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 07 May 07 - 05:20 PM What a shame; good luck. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Rasener Date: 07 May 07 - 05:22 PM Geoerge was brilliant Breezy. Jim - Go Villa LOL Do pop in - you can use a diffeernt name if you explain to them why. Kitty - I do love Mudcat, but unfortunatly I am used to forums that keep a very tight grip on flaming of which I am guilty of, but only when I have been flamed. Any way I do hope I get to meet you one day - Breezy & George speak highly of you. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: breezy Date: 07 May 07 - 05:26 PM Hello Villan , so you've not left after all. Kitty is something else, her recordings with les sullivan are also worth a listen They played Windward |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Herga Kitty Date: 07 May 07 - 05:28 PM Villan I remember that when I joined Mudcat I got burned on a flaming thread, but then learnt to avoid trolls. Hope you still dip in from time to time, even if not as a member. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Rasener Date: 07 May 07 - 05:28 PM Just saying goodbye Breezy and being polite :-) |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Herga Kitty Date: 07 May 07 - 05:31 PM Thanks Breezy. Actually my recording with MCP is worth a listen too! Available for £6 from Wildgoose, I think.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 May 07 - 05:32 PM Drop in here and lurk, even if you don't feel like posting, Villan. Myself, I never worry too much about the way people get a bit unpleasant from time to time here - it always seems to die down. No doubt our friendly clones play a significant part in that - there are different ways of moderating a forum, and the Mudcat is in fact moderately moderated. But I prefer a place where we can talk about everything and not feel it's got to be on topic - and also the fact that it's not particularly geared towards the UK, or for that matter the USA or anywhere else. And there's a good few people I'd really miss, and remarkably few I'd enjoy missing. (And the two you mention wouldn't be among them, even if they can get a bit stroppy at times.) |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Wesley S Date: 07 May 07 - 05:32 PM There are ways to filter out the posts of any person you choose. It would be as if they didn't exist at all. Something to consider... |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: The Borchester Echo Date: 07 May 07 - 05:39 PM Erm me and Richard Bridge are driving you away? That's an alliance so bizarre it doesn't bear thinking about. I joined Mudcat several years ago under the pseudonym that, inexplicably, so many peeps fail to understand (and it's so OBVIOUS) in order to defend a young performer who is now top of the game. He was coming under so much flak (a role now apparently inherited by me). All I can say is that if you have something to say, stay. If not, well . . . PS Talkawhile is crap. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: skipy Date: 07 May 07 - 05:40 PM Sorry you are leaving mate, I've enjoyed sharing with you, but if all the "good" people leave only the pratts will be left, please reconsider your choice, belong to both, we need you here! Skipy |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: skipy Date: 07 May 07 - 05:49 PM GREAT! So I though that I would join & take part in both! They advise that you use your real name not a "username" so I did! My real surname is "Guest" but oh! no, they will not me join because that is a "reserved" word! So I am being descriminated against because of my surname! So, I'll expain to them, but, no I can't talk to them because I am not a member! So if I join a "John Smith" I can get access, what bollox! Skipy |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Herga Kitty Date: 07 May 07 - 05:54 PM Gosh, Skipy - I think you've just blown your cover, for the people who don't understand the real meaning of "guest".... Kitty |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: skipy Date: 07 May 07 - 06:03 PM Hi, Kitty, hardly blown! I am always advertising Folkforms & White horse folk fest, Oh! there I go again. Skipy |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Bill D Date: 07 May 07 - 06:12 PM I never quite understand why anyone would leave because they don't like a couple of other members....especially since the worst offenses ARE now being deleted & edited. If I really can't stand someone, I mostly ignore them. If this were all 'in person' and I had to physically avoid someone, it would make sense that if the 'offender' was allowed in, I might have to go....but in here it is relatively easy to ignore those I don't like without expecting management to censor them FOR me. I have been here over 10 years, and the worst offenders are either gone or reformed...and I'm still here. The place is what you make it... The other place sounds interesting, but kinda like a 'gated community', which I would NOT enjoy living in. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Peace Date: 07 May 07 - 06:14 PM "the worst offenders are either gone or reformed" I am neither gone nor reformed, FYI. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Hawker Date: 07 May 07 - 06:37 PM Hi Les, sorry you have decided to go, I understand your reasons, at times Mudcat turns into mudsling and people get hurt. I hoe that you do drop in and lurk. I try to avoid conflict and like others ignore flamers, trolls and offensive comments, I have made some amazing friends here from all over the world! and would find it almost impossible to leave. I wish you - and your family well. It has been good knowing someone who shares similar challenges as a parent! Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Richard Bridge Date: 07 May 07 - 06:42 PM I am very sad to be lumped together with C**ntess Richard. She seems by and large to be another subscriber to the idea that those of us who may be ordinary should be excluded from performing folk music. But, frankly, the cited reasons for leaving do not add up. My disagreement with you was not conducted in flaming terms - at least not by me. Contrast your most recent dispute with the C**ntess. It also related to a central topic for this forum - whether your self professed subscription to excellence removed your preferred manifestation from being folk. Also by way of contrast, one of the main things about your preferred bolthole seems to be that it requires real names. Well, shock horror, I use mine here, unlike most. I am accountable for my views. Even more ironically, I tend to the view that I was a supporter of yours in your recent spat with the C**ntess. It looks more to me as if you require mindless approbation and adulation. I don't provide that, neither does the C**ntess, and it is not a thing you can properly require. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Sorcha Date: 07 May 07 - 06:44 PM Steady as she goes, Les. I'll miss you but I do understand. We are losing far too many of the good folks because of a few bad ones and bad 'editorial' policy but we aren't apparently allowed to discuss that. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Little Hawk Date: 07 May 07 - 07:08 PM It's perfectly understandable that anyone would leave, Villan. I hope you enjoy the other forum. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Big Al Whittle Date: 07 May 07 - 07:12 PM Totally understandable. Earlier in the month, I was weighing up leaving also, in fact its still in the balnce. I was also sorry when Divis went. Its exactly the same scenario. These people who cannot grasp that there shades of opinion on some matters and that people with a different set of experiences to your self have different insights - well, they make their presence on mudcat an absolute bloody misery for people they don't agree with. The vehemence, the moral certainty, the sheer bloody ignorance and indifference to how other peoples' lives have worked out can be utterly breathtaking in its insensitivity. Les's contribution to what he see as the folk community through the Faldingworth Club has been immeasurable. No one has the right to negate it - or say that it isn't Folk Music - cos I say so! Or its not English traditional, cos its not something I value. Its in England at this historical point in time and its what some artists wish to hand down. You may disagree - but you really haven't got a licence to exercise your talent for abuse and snotty superiority. And you should be ashamed for being hurtful to very decent guy. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Jim Lad Date: 07 May 07 - 07:13 PM "Flaming" must mean something entirely different in England! |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: skipy Date: 07 May 07 - 07:33 PM Close ranks, stand tall & true to whatever your causes are, but do not, repeat NOT run or walk away or you will hand the asylum over to the lunatics! Skipy |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Sorcha Date: 07 May 07 - 07:36 PM Sorry, Dave, but right now I'm just too exhausted to care about much. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Jack Campin Date: 07 May 07 - 07:44 PM Why a new forum? Dick Gaughan's already does what you want (it's polite and people use their real names), it's been going for years and has some good people on it. It's thin in content compared with this one, though. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Jim Lad Date: 07 May 07 - 07:51 PM Things will get better, Sorcha. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Rasener Date: 07 May 07 - 07:59 PM Richard Bridge my aplogies maybe I have misunderstood you. I deeply regret inferring that you are like Countess. I will e honest. I joined the other forum. I said hello in the newbies section. Then I posted about FL in the section that promoted muisc, clubs etc and put links. I then posted about YB2 and did links and I posted about this Saturday at FL. I beleived I was allowed to do that. Hoever it seems I wasn't and tried to apologise, but was banned as a spammer. So Skipy you were right. However it still doesn't get over the attitude of Countess Richard who seems to slag almost every person that posts off and gets away with it - why? She incites decent members into flaming her back. Oh sorry to the person that wondered what flaming was in England. It is saying insulting things about people. I am guilty of that, but only by responding to people who flame me. I do not flame in the normal circumstances. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 May 07 - 08:27 PM Don't flame other people. When flamed don't respond in kind. If we stick to those two rules, internet life gets much less stressful for ourselves and for everyone else. And that doesn't rule out strenuous discussions and heated arguments. Just nastiness and the wrong kind of silliness. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 07 May 07 - 08:41 PM "I bought the wrong bananas, when I went down to the shop I bought the wrong bananas, but the man told me they're not!" Now that's definitely the wrong kind of silliness... :-P |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: M.Ted Date: 07 May 07 - 08:42 PM So you were banned from the sanctum for the gentle at heart that you made such a fuss about? And now you're back, hat in hand, saying that it was all a misunderstanding with our dear Richard Bridge? Sounds good to me. Welcome back!! |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Peace Date: 07 May 07 - 08:58 PM "Hoever it seems I wasn't and tried to apologise, but was banned as a spammer." Well then, fuck 'em. I'm glad you're not going. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: heric Date: 07 May 07 - 09:02 PM lol. If you want to keep your blood pressure down, read but don't post above the line. It's vicious brutal up there. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Peace Date: 07 May 07 - 09:04 PM LOLOL Heric, I love your phrasing and humour. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Sorcha Date: 07 May 07 - 09:07 PM Les, I've considered going too. So far, I'm still trying. Some answers would be nice, but I doubt we'll ever get them. Why a few have troll/spam/flame priviliges but others don't. We know why Help was closed, but will it ever be back? I've been on the butt end of some of the Countess' posts, but blew it off. Then there was Mad Lizze. At least she seems gone again. Love to the girls. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Jim Lad Date: 07 May 07 - 11:03 PM "If you want to keep your blood pressure down, read but don't post above the line. It's vicious brutal up there." Funny! That's just the way I feel about the BS threads. Nice that you're back, Villan. Nicer still if you can make your peace with some. If not, they're easy enough to avoid. Sure it's a grand old team to play for And it's a grand old team to see.... Great song that! |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: katlaughing Date: 07 May 07 - 11:11 PM If you have been flamed, personally attacked, etc. let Joe Offer or one of the clones know about it. We do our best, but sometimes we miss them. IF you respond to them it makes deletion much less likely. McGrath has it right...don't flame, if you are flamed, don't respond. Hope you do stick around, Villan. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: GUEST,Yank Date: 08 May 07 - 12:22 AM Freedom of speech is a sonofabitch, dude. Sorry you can't handle it. Give your queen's ass a big wet one and you'll feel better. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Peace Date: 08 May 07 - 12:38 AM And there is the reason Guests and members posting as Guests should not be allowed to post to BS. |
Subject: RE: Goodbye from The Villan From: Lonesome EJ Date: 08 May 07 - 12:58 AM In sorrow over Villan's departure, followed by joy at his return, I was inspired to write the following Villan's Chanty When first I read his comments Sad was I to see He was a-leavin' Mudcat To Talkawhile for free CHO To talkawhile for free me lads Where talk's polite n' free The likes o' him around this place we never more shall see There's several 'round here I won't name who'll drive ye up a tree But most o' them keep their pie-holes shut 'Cept Offer and Bill D CHO 'Cept Offer and Bill D me lads From their jibes we're never free Enough to make ye set yer course To Talkawhile for free Now if we keel-haul the Countess And sink Dick Bridge in the sea We can calmly put our kettles on And take a friendly Tea Cho We'll take a friendly tea me lads and here we'll ever be And not jump ship from too much lip to Talkawhile for free (Slowly) What's that I see approaching us?
