Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Cathie Date: 10 May 07 - 04:42 AM No. How was your door with big knockers Ross? Baroque? Will you all Bach today? John - apart from all the resonancial and vibratory aspects of your new guitar that we talked about yesterday, it's 'creamy' to play. Ross - Who are Hugh and Jemmima? That's what the doctor used to call my twins before they were born. I just thought he'd made up two names - is this a spooky coincidence or were you an obstetrician in a former life? |

Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: GUEST Date: 10 May 07 - 01:00 PM Hello All Happy May Day = 10 days late. Nice to see you're all still barking mad. Padstow was brill Breezy was there and very much on form, so was Christine and lots of really good singers in the Ringers. Even those who kept going till the next morning ! We didnt get any sleep at all and then someone started playing the r.cordian (my new spelling) in the bar just below our room, at 4 in the morning. What fun. Oh sorry, its me PA, working from home with tonsilitis. My boss turned up today armed with pop, flowers ..... and tons of work. He's a creep but we love him. |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Cathie Date: 10 May 07 - 02:31 PM Hello PA. Missed you. Sounds a great holiday! Recover well. What's your star sign? Sagittarius? |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: GUEST,Hitchin John Date: 11 May 07 - 01:19 AM Hi all Another 6am start - quite tired now. At least it helps pay for the Taylor. Cathie - I am glad you like the new guitar - I am very pleased with it. Quite hard to think of anything lively at 6.15 - ah well later starts next week. |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Ross Date: 12 May 07 - 04:28 AM Ho John - nice guitar - I wish I could twang it Welcome back PA - mystic Meg says you will get better I went to see Roger Waters last night - very interesting It seems the band have banned him from singing all the Gilmour songs It seems to work well Dark Side was very good and Set The Control for the Heart of the Sun Not sure about his new bee in the bonnet - the lovely wall Israel are building between themselves and the fab Palestinians Isn't the London Underground interesting - discuss |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Cathie Date: 12 May 07 - 07:35 AM I love the cosmopolitan world of The Underground and in fact Le Metro. It does get busy and squashy pre theatre times. I found it very difficult when I moved from London to Stevenage - I felt people staring or watching what I was doing. Nobody takes much notice in London. I suppose I have developed People Watching Habit myself, though I used to think it was rude. Maybe there are stages - - going about your business in a world of your own - trying not to lose your children or catch the double buggy in the doors - wondering at the world and its inhabitants Information is so much better these days, especially at links like Cannon Street. Security too. Could you imagine yourself doing a Crocodile Dundee Walk above eveyone's heads to reach Linda Wotsit? Or busking even? |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: The Unicorn Man Date: 13 May 07 - 05:46 AM Hello I am back. |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: breezy Date: 13 May 07 - 08:16 AM hello all, hope you dont mind me popping in , I see things are still happening, in barton , well done Ross, keep it up, and it was nice to see you cathie at orps, How's yer dad? I do alot of travelling on trains and buses these days , striking up conversations is a challenge but usually worthwhile and makes the time passing more interesting here are my recommendations for the coming week I hope the Steve Tilston gig at Letchers was well attended, he is a great guy, talking of which so are Jim Causley monday herga and from halifax Nova Sctia, Dan Mackinnon Thursday Bishop's Stortford, well worth organising a party to hear, realy great songs as well as voice and guitar, very friendly natives and fantastic natural acoustics then Sunday 20th May The Wind-ex at the R n C St Albans and yes Padstow was good now whose this P A guy? |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Cathie Date: 13 May 07 - 03:04 PM Hi John. - and Mystic Meg said it was going to be a tanned Australian wearing shorts that would bring me luck. I hope a tanned Welshman in shorts will have the same effect. Nice of you to drop in. Were your ears burning? I was thinking of coming to St Albans tonight, then realised I had the wrong week. My Dad's OK thanks - I'll be down there again soon. 'Striking up conversations is a challenge' . That's a surprise. Feel free to use the Barton Thread for inspiration. We strike up conversations here most days, ranging from 'how to rinse out your thongs in a camper van' to 'Stevenage won at Wembley last Saturday' |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Cathie Date: 13 May 07 - 03:11 PM Hitchin John Which type of strings does your guitar have? I changed to phosperous(??) last time at the recommendation of the shop. Should I try the bronze(??) again as either my strings are sounding tinny, or my picking has improved enough for me to notice that I can actually make different sounds. Perhaps leave for a discussion on Wednesday. |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Ross Date: 14 May 07 - 06:35 AM Hi everyone What a fab weekend - Roger Waters and then JB Priestly's Dangerous Corner at Dunstable, with a cast from Emmerdale & Coronation Street Shame about the weather - I went for a sauna yeaterday to dry myself out Welcome back Unicorn Man & Breezy (proper folkies with 'the knowledge') I think Hitchin John has coated elixir strings on his guitar - I could tell Is it true the Folkaholics are appearing at St Neots on the 17th July? Is it compulsory to take a double buggy on public transport? |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Cathie Date: 14 May 07 - 07:27 AM Folkaholics are aparently appearing on 17th July. See Winkwell thread. I will bring you the programme on Wednesday. I was going to mention that I knew The Folkaholics when I was there on Sunday, but feared being mobbed in their frenzy of excitement and anticipation. |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Ross Date: 14 May 07 - 09:56 AM I do hope the ladies don't throw their underpants at us It's so hard playing a 'G' string with a 'G' string on your head It is mostly raining here in Redbourn |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: GUEST,hitchin John Date: 14 May 07 - 11:05 AM Hi Cathie Yes the new guitar has coated strings - elixir is the make. Most acoustic strings are phosphor-bronze wrapped around a steel core different manufacturers have different sounds slightly a heavier guage string gives a better tone generally but |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Cathie Date: 14 May 07 - 01:04 PM but with my playing, it doesn't make much odds! :))) Thanks John |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: GUEST Date: 14 May 07 - 03:43 PM Hi Cathie Don't be too quick to put yourself down - you are probably getting more of an ear for what is right, I didn't finish earlier - heavier gauge strings general give a better tone but are harder to play particularly if you like bending the odd note. So string gauge is a compromise between tone and playability. I find playing all night with heavy strings and a high action is quite wearing but slightly lighter strings mean I can play much longer without finger fatigue. With strings it is worth trying different types and gaugesespecially if you're not totally happy with your tone. Hope this helps a little John |
Subject: RE: May things at the Bull, Barton Pie, Beds From: Cathie Date: 14 May 07 - 05:04 PM Thanks John - that's very interesting. Probably see you Wednesday Cathy |
