At the Good Intent Tone Deaf Leopard were challenged to write a song for next year, featuring ten pints of beer. We wrote the chorus on the way back to the hotel, and a coffee time meet with John Barden on Monday produced the first verse. It's based on "Rolling down the River"

Now you know your time's well spent
Drinking in The Good Intent
Eyes are crossed, and knees are bent
Roll down to The Man of Kent

Chorus
Drinking up, drinking down
Getting drunk in Rochester Town
Plenty of pubs to go around
Rolling down the High Street.

Over to you to write a verse for each pub in Rochester High Street please.

PS, I've actually got this really original idea. Let's sing folk songs.

Very good Richard but there's nowt wrong with writing new'uns.
All of the traditional songs were written by someone, surely?
Now anyone got any proper verses?

Pubs in Rochester High Street please, but beer should feature somewhere we feel. So here's a few suggestions.
The Royal Victoria and Bull, The Crown, Expectations, George Vaults, Kings Head, Ye Arrow, Jolly Knight, Eagle, Queen Charlotte, Two Brewers.

That Jolly night in the Jolly Knight,
We supped our ewers of ale.
Hale and hearty songs were sung,
Of love, of hill and dale.

That sort of thing do?

I guess most of the stuff I write is in trad style...and much in older English dialect. Trad at heart me!

It's very good Georgian but it don't fit the tune. As explained in the opening post... we are parodying "Rolling down the River" We've come up with a couple more verses ourselves.... anyone else please?

Now it seems we're in the Bull
Barman, give that pump a pull.
Someone's tapping on me skull -
Could it be I'm getting full?

I suppose that should be:

In the Royal Vic and Bull -
Barman, give that pump a pull.
Someone's tapping on me skull -
Could it be I'm getting full?

Now we're drinking dry The Crown
Time to have another round,
Set 'em up and knock 'em down,
While the room keeps turning round.

Here's another one:

Marched into the Queen Charlotte
"Let's have some of what you've got
Put it in me drinking pot"
"Out of here ye drunken sot!"

Here are some for those not yet attempted.

I think Richard is right, what we should be doing is searching for a song that was already written about all the Rochester High Street pubs, by person or persons unknown, probably some time ago.

Come to think of it, I did actually find the following verses in this old unsigned manuscript stuffed into a gap between the stones in the wall of Rochester castle ...

Beer comes up to Expectations
Drinking off our week's frustrations
'Til we start to lose our stations
Spinning round in wild gyrations

When we're at the old George Vaults
Whether landsmen or old salts
We disdain the single malts
Drinking beer that has no faults

Found the door was just too narrow
As I tried to leave Ye Arrow
Bloated like a giant marrow
Legless in a wheel barrow

Was it something that I said
Drinking in the old King's Head?
Made it home but wasn't fed,
Now I'm exiled from the bed

Drinkers' noses like a beagle
Sniff the beer down at the Eagle
Some so young they're scarcely legal
But the welcome there is regal

This next pub might need Two Brewers
For the scrum of thirsty queuers
In the end it all goes through us
Back into Rochester's sewers

Great session last night at the Greyhound, Maidstone, and to catch up with Melodeonboy before leaving. I hope Growler's lurgy realises soon it has bitten off more than it can chew. Imagine trying to make his voice husky!

GUEST,Charlotte the oast ouse opper - The Greyhound Sessions are always the 2nd and 4th. Monday of the month, so the next one is 25th. June.
I'm right upset that I wasn't there last night to see Canberra Chris, but I was worn out after a weeks travelling. I'm just round the corner from The Greyhound too.
John Barden

Thanks for those extra verses, McGrath, and Chris, we can possibly put the song together soon, and post it for all to learn. Don't forget, it is set to "Rolling Down the River"
