Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: Genie Date: 28 Jun 07 - 05:11 AM I agree, Frank. That "Trad" guy (gal?) had a way with songwriting and would be a great "master" to study. Genie §;-D |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: Stringsinger Date: 25 Jun 07 - 11:56 AM Good song Amos! Need to see more like it. Not much for pubs or bars but I sure like the specificity and the characters you presented. I'd like to see this kind of a model for folkstyle writing rather than the chest-beating rants you hear these days or the psuedo-profundity of poppy love ballads done in a breathy or growly over-dramatic pinched vocal style . The best thing is to write your own songs but study the masters...Woody, Jean Ritchie, Christopherson, Prine, Jimmy Driftwood and be sure to study the anonymous folk music from the world of cultures. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: SharonA Date: 24 Jun 07 - 11:17 PM Amos: Lovely, lovely job. The term "colour scheme" was the only thing that gave me pause (sounds a bit interior-designerish to me -- there must be a more colloquial term for the same thing, but since I'm not British either I wouldn't know it). I could get all pedantic about how "in" and "Inn" don't technically rhyme since they're homophones, but of course there are plenty of homophones in traditional folk songs so it hardly matters. I'm sure that all the Station Inn folk will be quite pleased ("chuffed?") to hear your song... especially Emma! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: GUEST,mg Date: 23 Jun 07 - 05:19 PM Hi..great song.. I wonder if someone could help me put the tune to some words one of the Fisher Poets wrote...his wife asked me if I could but so far I have not and I am way overdue. The problem for me is I think the rhythm is a mite off for a tune...but please to b.c. me at maryogarvey@yahoo.com and I will send you the words once I am work...he wants it to be like a drinking song..because it is about square bottles of rum or whiskey not rolling around on a ship. mg |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: Amos Date: 20 Jun 07 - 12:04 AM I don't do the "What Is Folk" debate, as I have no time for imponderables. But I wrote a ditty for Skycaptain, who started this thread as a guest and became a member. He has approved same, and I tender herewith the humble lyrics thereunto. http://amos.adajessup.com/Station%20Inn%20v2.mp3

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: Genie Date: 19 Jun 07 - 10:01 PM And if the council decides Amos's song isn't "folk," do we get to give him 20 lashes with a worn-out E-string? :D |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: GUEST,Trix Date: 19 Jun 07 - 06:09 PM I am sure the 'folk' council will make the right decision! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 19 Jun 07 - 05:49 PM As it happens, Trix, I'm not ashamed of anything. I just can't abide wilful ignorance, that's all! For example Amos's song may well be a brilliant song - bit it isn't a 'folk song' until the 'folk' decide that it is. I'm sure that loads of people will accuse me of nit-picking - but it isn't - it's fundamental (see the trillions of previous threads about 'what is a folk song?'). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: Amos Date: 19 Jun 07 - 10:15 AM Well, Skycaptain dropped me a PM and sez he likes it all right. So this evening I will put the lyrics in here, and also post a link to an MP3 demonstrating the choon for those who want to hear it. A |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: GUEST,Trix Date: 19 Jun 07 - 09:48 AM Shimrod, what a selfish, judgmental and pointless thing to say! You should be ashamed for treating any idea or request by someone to learn more so venomously. The only ignorant person here is you and your narrow minded and pathetic opinions! Good luck to all songwriters and welcome all newcomers! Trix |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: harpmolly Date: 19 Jun 07 - 01:18 AM I'm coming in late here, but must chime in with my high regard for Amos' songwriting skills! M |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: Genie Date: 19 Jun 07 - 01:08 AM Guest Cs, I think it's great that you've accepted Amos's offer. That's a win-win. Amos gives (sells?) good song and anything that helps the cat's bottom line is a good thing. I still like the Song Challenge idea, though. If you're open to adding more than one new "folk song" to your repetoire, how about posting the general gist of what you'd like your song to express -- it could be in this thread or in a separate Song Challenge thread -- and inviting anyone and everyone to submit their songs based on those ideas? Genie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: Amos Date: 18 Jun 07 - 09:06 PM Well, that's you, Shim. I am a more lenient sorta chap and I have written a fine little song for the lads ta the Station Inn, WHitbuy, and wish Skycaptain would pop back in to collect his due. Otherwise I may post it somewhere on a Whitby thread of which there are MANY. A |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Can someone write me a folk song? From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 18 Jun 07 - 04:22 AM I wouldn't even consider writing anything for an ignorant person who doesn't know (or even want to know) what a 'folk song' is! |
