Hi all, I'm fowarding this to everyone on my mailing list. Would love to actually pull this off. Sorry if it's like junk mail to you. "THE GREAT "GAS OUT" It's time we did something about the price of gasoline in America! We are all sick and tired of high prices when there are literally millions of gallons in storage. Know what I found out? If there was just ONE day when no one purchased any gasoline, prices would drop drastically. The so-called oil cartel has decided to slow production by some 2 million barrels per day to drive up the price. I have decided to see how many Americans we can get to NOT BUY ANY GASOLINE on one particular day! Let's have a GAS OUT! Do not buy any gasoline on APRIL 30, 1999!!!!! Buy on Thursday before, or Saturday after. Do not buy any gasoline on FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1999. Wanna help? Send this message to everyone you know. Ask them to do the same. All we need is a few million to participate in order to make a difference. We CAN make a difference. |

But I have a cynical side, or perhaps a cautious one, that wonders just how realistic it is and whether it really would work- wouldn't it do just the opposite, drive prices even higher so the companies could make up for the loss or revenue for the day? I'd love to make a difference, but is this the way? I'm sure it would be better for me to get a bike instead of driving my 10 year old car 6 miles a day. Allison |

Subject: RE: Gas Prices From: Bob Landry Date: 06 Apr 99 - 05:32 PM Lemme stir the pot a little bit. Gas prices here went up by almost 14% recently and all of it goes to the oil industry. That's not a huge hit, considering they are still lower than they were anly a year or so ago. From what I've read, the increase in oil prices follows an agreement between western and middle eastern producers to cut down on production in order to stimulate the price of oil. The rapprochement between the US and Iran may have had a something to do with this agreement. The price of oil which, based on the West Texas crude benchmark, was about US$11 per barrel was too low to justify any new major projects in the North American oil industry. The increase in oil prices will allow these projects to go ahead and stimulate the economies of the oil-producing regions of Canada and the US. As I understand it, we are far from running out of oil. Conventional oil production technonogy can only recover about 15% of oil reserves and, if I have the correct numbers, enhanced technologies only raise the recovery rate to 20% or 25%. What we need to work on is to continue reducing the harmful emissions of burning fossil fuels. Increased oil prices, which justify continuing development of oil industry technology, will also justify the continuing development of emission control technology. Bob |

Subject: RE: Gas Prices From: Bill D Date: 06 Apr 99 - 06:05 PM 1) this is NOT the place for that kind of thread. 2) gas prices, at least in the USA, are no higher than they were 18 years ago!..they MAY eventually go to a price that bothers me, but no amount of artifical one day boycotts are going to affect the global markets. 3)I, personally, hate mass emailings and requests like this...for ANY purpose. (who remembers hearing that sending in cigarette packages would help buy iron lungs?) .....call be a cynic, but 98.4123% of grass roots crusades of this nature are misguided and a waste of time.. I may or may not need gas that day....but don't you think that the oil companies are reading & hearing about this?...and that they will adjust their strategy accordingly? |

High prices for petrol in the US, you have got to be joking! Now if you were advocating a 400% increase in the tax on petrol with the proceeds going to social services I might agree. Subject: RE: Gas Prices From: MudGuard Date: 07 Apr 99 - 02:18 AM I think the only way to reduce the gas prices with a long term effect is to reduce the use of gas as prices are usually influenced by 1) the available amount on which you don't have a lot of influence, it is controlled by the oil industry 2) the requested amount which many of us can reduce if we want, e.g. - ride your bike, - walk, - use public transport, - if you need to drive a car use one that needs less gas - if you need to drive a car drive in a way that needs less gas - ... This will have more influence on gas prices than just not buying any gas on one particular day - the gas will still be bought, before or after this day. The only effect might be that the people working at gas stations have a lazy day! Andreas |

Here in the Vancouver, BC area we have watched our prices jump around from a low of $.33/litre to a high of $.57/litre, sometimes over night, sometimes over the course of a day. Now, for those of you who don't realize that Canada uses the metric system (we're still trying to figure it out!), 1 US gallon = 3.78 litres. I'll let you do the math. Even with the dollar the way it is, that is still a high price for gas, and one heck of a jump from one day to the next. I think things are beginning to settle down again, and of course at the higher rates. Many Canadians living near the border will travel south to buy their gas, just because it ends up being cheaper in the long run. And I agree with Bill D., This is not the place for this type of thread. |

But I agree that it is still underpriced--the oil industry is just another of the industries whose prices don't reflect the real costs of their products, not in production but in after-costs like health concerns and destruction of environment, not to mention social costs in the source countries. Other such industries include tobacco, of course; electric power generation--especially nuclear, factory hog farming (a court refused to award damages to a man whose new $400,000 house ended up six feet deep in pig shit when a sewer pond levee broke--on the basis that the spill was an act of God). Helps the farmers, hurts those dictators in countries with a dictator of a different religion. (not that religion is the reason I don't care for them) Now if I could buy ethanol without oil in it. I would. (I've come to the conclusions that my support for the gulf war back then was a mistake, if oil is the only reason for it. If the war was about something more, maybe it would have been worth it) |
