30 May 2007 Cottingham Live at the Back Room

As part of Wilberforce 2007 celebrations, this special evening has been put together with local singers including Ossanflags Willa and Hissyfit and local songwriters Mervyn Frost and Nick Stubbs, and the beautiful harmonies of the Beverley Community Choir. From the poignant reminders of the slave's struggle and the work of William Wilberforce to the vibrant rythmns of the Spirituals, you will be both moved and uplifted by this evening's programme.

Situated at The Back Room, in Hallgate Cottingham, this event will start at 8.00pm on Wednesday 30 May 2007. The Back Room is a superb non-smoking venue, with some of the best acoustics around. There is a small entrance fee of £2.00 (reductions for performers). No membership is required.

Don't shout Pip - this is a theme'd singers/musicians night - people pay each week £1.00 is all we charge which covers our costs over the year- plenty of free sessions for musicians to go to in our area, and Ive paid plenty of times in folk clubs to sing, and done more free gigs than paid gigs in my time. I've spent a lot of personal time and money on this designing programmes printing and advertising -we dont receive sponsorship for this event-sorry if you are not happy about this.

It is not unusual for performers /guests to pay at the door of folk clubs.Going back to the gloriouse days of the "Rugby tavern" folk club dock street Hull in the seventies, I have seen such stalwarts as Dick Gaughan, Martin Carthy. Bob Davenport et all pay to get in........then it was the princley sum of 50pence!! I think that would have bought you five pints of Camerons Strongarm then. So I reckon a quid or two in the twenty first century aint out the way to keep music live.

I dont get to Cottingham live as much as I would like, but keep on doing a great job Linda, you can always count on my support - paying performer and all.

But we love to see you when we do Mick, thanks for your support -we do have costs and we don't think a quid for an evening of stonking enertainment is a huge sacrifice.

Carol, it was good to see and hear you last Wednesday, I trust you got home safely. It was another excellent evening (IMHO)and this weeks' event should be too, with all the meticulous planning and research done by Linda. Doors open 7.30 for 8pm start.

yes guest they did- and not one complained! we had a packed house fanatastic singers and musicians and everyone had a great time! The money we raised goes towards room hire for the folk orchestra, advertsiing and paying towards proffesional musicians- its cheaper than watching a night's TV. hard work keeping music live but great fun when its as good as this. All performers pay on singers muscians nights, we are a club not a session, why is this a problem, for what is lss than the cost of a cup of decent coffee?

If performers are allowed in for free, should they declare this as "benefit in kind" to the nerds at the Inland Revenue? Best not bother eh!
