Whenever I visit my brothers in the wilds of West Yorkshire, we usually end up in a pub and after a few pints the old toast comes out (no, not the hot bread variety)so I thought I'd share it with you, said of course with a pint in hand;-

"Many my friends tha's made me foes, and tha's made me pop me clothes
But now that tha's so near me nose, up tha comes and down tha goes!"

Anyone know any other original toasts, apart from Cheers! Bottoms up! and Salud! that is.....

The Farewell Toast - Probably best if sung ala Mike Cross on his CD "The Best of the Funny stuff"

Here's to the wine we love to drink and the food we love to eat
Here's to our wives and sweethearts, and may they never meet
Here's champagne for our real friends and real pain for our sham friends
And when this journey finally ends may all of us fine peace.

Here's to the women that I've loved and all the ones I've kissed
As for regrets I have just one, that's all the ones I missed
Yes women's faults are many, we men have only two,
Every single thing we say and every thing we do

I wish you health I wish you wealth and happiness galore
I wish ya heaven when ya die, what could I wish ya more
May your joys be as deep as the oceans, your troubles as light as it's foam
And may you find sweet peace of mind wherever you may roam

Here's to the girl I love.
I wish that she were nigh.
If drinking beer would bring her here,
I'd drink the damn place dry.

Better a free bottle in front of me than a prefrontal lobotomy.

Oh here's to other meetings,
And merry greetings then,
And here's to those we've drunk with,
But never can again.

No bar too far to drink to you.

We usually raise our glasses in silence, remembering friends and family from long ago.

If something IS said it usually along the lines of "To us. We're all that's left, and all that we started with."

May you be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

There's many a good reason for drinking,
And one has just entered my head.
If a fellow can't drink when he's living,
How the hell can he drink when he's dead?

Past the teeth, round the gums,
Look out stomach, here it comes.

Splott Man, I long ago learned a longer version of that toast:

Here's to the breezes that blow through the treeses
They blow the girls' skirtses above the girls' kneeses
The college man seeses and does what he pleases
And spreads the diseases...Oh Jeeziz, oh Jeeziz!

Many fine toasts here. Now a question for yous: where you live, do people (apart from folkies) regularly or even occasionally make toasts when they drink INformally, or is it quite rare to hear a toast on an informal occasion? (Just curious).

When I was young and vulgar (now I'm old and vulgar), a popular toast was "Here's to the kisses I have snatched. And vice versa."

G.K. Chersterton wrote:
"Here's to the absent lords. May they
Long in a foreign country stay
Drinking at other ladies' boards
The health of other absent lords."

Well, it was a rather famous military toast, often used at reunions.

And there's

Here's to you, as good as you are
and here's to me, as bad as I am.
And as good as you are,
and as bad as I am,
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am.

Perhaps a nice Mudelf could prefix the thread with "Folklore" and relocate it above the line.

Cheers, Rowan

May the Lord turn their hearts to love us,
And if He can't turn their hearts,
May He turn their ankles so we'll know them by their limping

(To be drunk only with an alcoholic drink in one's hand*)
"Here's to a Temperence supper
With water in glasses tall
And coffee and tea to finish...
And us nowhere near it at all!
"

"To your health and mine, in water or wine
I'll wish you the best....Ah, you know the rest

Who bothers with toasts? Usually it's just chuck it down the neck and get on with the grub.

I quite often raise a glass in a silent toast, usually to absent friends, recently departed or to an alternative deity whose help would be appreciated as it appears the major ones are out to lunch.

If I have to provide a formal toast, it's usually 'Absent Friends' or the particular individual for whom the dinner is given. If the person is deceased, then it's a glass of something special, left untouched on the table. Says much more than any words can.

From Covey Crump's collection of naval slang and miscellanea:

TRADITIONAL WARDROOM EVENING TOASTS

The following are quoted by Commander Beckett as the routine toasts drunk after dinner in wardrooms in Nelson's time:

Sunday ............... Absent friends.
Monday ............... Our ships at sea.
Tuesday .............. Our men.
Wednesday ............ Ourselves
...(as no one else is likely to concern themselves with our welfare).
Thursday ............. A bloody war or a sickly season.
Friday ............... A willing foe and sea room.
Saturday ............. Sweethearts and wives.

Of these, only Saturday's is regularly heard nowadays, probably because mess dinners are usually held on Saturday nights. It usually has the sotto voce addendum, "may they never meet".

The point of Thursday's was that these were the circumstances likely to lead to rapid promotion!

My old headmaster used to insist that whenever a toast to the Queen (quaint old UK custom) was announced while everyone else might say "the Queen" he would say "the Duke of Lancaster" - as the reigning monarch is the said duke. He was of course from the red rose corner of England.
