Subject: RE: BS: And the Voice of a Child Shall Lead Them From: Mrrzy Date: 28 May 07 - 01:21 PM Whew. This ties into something I thought of a few days back - let's stop calling it The Environment. That makes it something, by definition, of which we are not a part, but within which we exist. Instead, let's call it The Biosphere. Then we are just a part of it, not separate. I think that would help the cause once called environmentalism. However, biospherism isn't as mellifluous, so other terms requested... -Mrr |

Subject: RE: BS: And the Voice of a Child Shall Lead Them From: GUEST,petr Date: 28 May 07 - 02:41 PM its time 'economists' start including externalities like the atmosphere, rivers, forests etc.. in the costs.. As long as theyre 3rd party costs passed on to future generations things arent going to change. Jared Diamond's 'Collapse' discusses how the poorer states like Montana allow all sorts of tax breaks for mining companies to setup in the state but when its time to go.. they opt for bankruptcy or running the company down so as to avoid any cleanup costs.. one also just has to read the history of Easter Island to see the way things can go.. what did the Easter Islander think when he cut down the last tree?? Well by then there were only small bushes and thats all that people would have known over a lifetime. this idea that our economy must continually 'grow' otherwise its bad.. heres another of Jared Diamonds observations from Collapse.. People of the developing world would like to have the same lifestyle as those of the developed world - however it is just not sustainable if you look at the ecological footprint that would involve.. Not only that - there is one thing none of these ambassadors to these conference ever discuss - and that is that the current lifestyle of the western world is also unsustainable. |

Subject: RE: BS: And the Voice of a Child Shall Lead Them From: GUEST,dianavan Date: 28 May 07 - 10:39 PM I am very happy that you are viewing this video but why has it taken 15 years for anyone to know about it? I know about it because I live in Vancouver and my daughter is in the same peer group but I am amazed that it hasn't been seen until now. In Vancouver, environmental education is part of the curriculum and we start teaching global responsibility in the primary grades. When are people going to wake up? I guess its something FOX would never show. Come to think about it, I doubt if any of the major media outlets picked it up. Sometimes it seems so hopeless and then you realize that these 'kids' are now in their 30's and are still fighting. They now champion sustainability, environmental architecture and green urban planning. Maybe, just maybe, they can turn the tide. I hope so. It makes any other vocation seem pretty damn trivial. |
