For those who may not be familiar with the song Strange Fruit, here's a excerpt from that song's wikipedia page:

Ebbie....where did you hear the song/ tune. There are so many different versions of Sally Ann. And there isn't .10 cents worth of difference between a couple of the versions of Sally Ann and Sail Away Ladies.

Not until a month ago did I hear Sally Ann played and sung to the tune of Sail Away Ladies. The lyrics were not familiar to me. Sail Away Ladies has its own lyrics- whuzzup with that?

The Sally Ann (sister to Liza Jane?) I have known for years is an A tune, and the lyrics, which hardly anyone sings, talk about a muskrat.

Doesn't anybody besides me think of Billy Holliday when the phrase "strange fruit" is used, especially in the context of lynching? (Yip Harburg wrote the actual words IIRC but it's Billie's song)

OK, on Mark O'Connor's CD it says:

It lists publishing as:
Mark O'Connor Music / Tree Publishing Co, Inc. BMI
Sony Tunes Inc. ASCAP

It's interesting to note that it has both BMI and ASCAP listed!

It's probebly an old fiddle tune that has been adapted.
You can't go by the publishing and info on a CD or anything else really.
Just think how A.C. Carter ripped off every traditional song he could find and claimed them. This is essentially how BMI was formed.

By the way: The correct lyrics in the last verse are:
Darkened shadows cross the floor and not Doc and Cellos cross the floor. Although it conjures up visions of some old guy named Doc and ghostly cellos (kinda' like fiddles) those are not the lyrics.

and... the line "bore strange fruit" is/was a commonly used phrase that refers to the Bible's reference of Adam eating the apple. That is probebly the oldest line in the song!

Cute song, nicely atmospheric, but not in the least traditional. It's a modern literary-style exercise -- I haven't seen the O'Connor record, but I bet if you check the composer credits it might be illuminating.

It basically forms a whole new song based on a single tag from the REALLY traditional "Sally Ann" and a single line from the traditional "Sail Away Ladies."

Kinda hate to see such a song, whatever its merits, credited as "traditional" when it's clearly not. Reminds me of John Jacob Niles sneaking his compositions into the folkstream by pretending he'd collected them somewhere vague from someone even vaguer.

Of course it's getting to be "traditional" to call something "traditional" even when it isn't. How much less traditional can you get? :)

The first version of the lyrics posted above are the same as the version on Mark O'Connor's "New Nashville Cats" that came out in 1990.

The version is pretty fast, but the vocalist named John Coawn sings a really nice vocal track with pretty good annunciation.

The words are the same.

I think that I'm going to record a version of this.

The lyrics of the 'strange fruit' version has little to do with the old fiddle tune; I agree with Tiktok that it is modern, perhaps with a wee bit of a steal from Abel Meerapol (Lewis Allan).

I don't know, I am just getting into Bluegrass music, and I found Sally Ann listed, but I don't believe it's all there, maybe it's not a written song, maybe it's handed down, and sung this way, or that way depending on the band.
