Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 08 - 09:58 PM For those who may not be familiar with the song Strange Fruit, here's a excerpt from that song's wikipedia page: Strange Fruit" is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday. It condemned American racism, particularly the lynching of African Americans that had occurred chiefly in the South but also in the North for decades before this was written. Holiday's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1978.[2] It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts... Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: GUEST,Don Date: 27 Nov 05 - 05:38 AM Ebbie....where did you hear the song/ tune. There are so many different versions of Sally Ann. And there isn't .10 cents worth of difference between a couple of the versions of Sally Ann and Sail Away Ladies. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: GLoux Date: 11 Nov 05 - 07:30 PM Did you ever see a muskrat, Sally Ann Dragging his slick tail through the sand? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: Ebbie Date: 11 Nov 05 - 06:21 PM Not until a month ago did I hear Sally Ann played and sung to the tune of Sail Away Ladies. The lyrics were not familiar to me. Sail Away Ladies has its own lyrics- whuzzup with that? The Sally Ann (sister to Liza Jane?) I have known for years is an A tune, and the lyrics, which hardly anyone sings, talk about a muskrat. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: GUEST,Pete Peterson Date: 11 Nov 05 - 09:27 AM Doesn't anybody besides me think of Billy Holliday when the phrase "strange fruit" is used, especially in the context of lynching? (Yip Harburg wrote the actual words IIRC but it's Billie's song) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: GUEST Date: 10 Nov 05 - 10:14 AM OK, on Mark O'Connor's CD it says: (Traditional) Arrangement by: Mark O'Connor and Harry Stinson Lyrics by: Alice Randall, Harry Stinson, Mark O'Connor It lists publishing as: Mark O'Connor Music / Tree Publishing Co, Inc. BMI Sony Tunes Inc. ASCAP It's interesting to note that it has both BMI and ASCAP listed! It's probebly an old fiddle tune that has been adapted. You can't go by the publishing and info on a CD or anything else really. Just think how A.C. Carter ripped off every traditional song he could find and claimed them. This is essentially how BMI was formed. By the way: The correct lyrics in the last verse are: Darkened shadows cross the floor and not Doc and Cellos cross the floor. Although it conjures up visions of some old guy named Doc and ghostly cellos (kinda' like fiddles) those are not the lyrics. and... the line "bore strange fruit" is/was a commonly used phrase that refers to the Bible's reference of Adam eating the apple. That is probebly the oldest line in the song! DB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 24 Sep 05 - 11:22 AM Cute song, nicely atmospheric, but not in the least traditional. It's a modern literary-style exercise -- I haven't seen the O'Connor record, but I bet if you check the composer credits it might be illuminating. It basically forms a whole new song based on a single tag from the REALLY traditional "Sally Ann" and a single line from the traditional "Sail Away Ladies." Kinda hate to see such a song, whatever its merits, credited as "traditional" when it's clearly not. Reminds me of John Jacob Niles sneaking his compositions into the folkstream by pretending he'd collected them somewhere vague from someone even vaguer. Of course it's getting to be "traditional" to call something "traditional" even when it isn't. How much less traditional can you get? :) Bob |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: GUEST,Danny Brown Date: 24 Sep 05 - 02:13 AM The first version of the lyrics posted above are the same as the version on Mark O'Connor's "New Nashville Cats" that came out in 1990. The version is pretty fast, but the vocalist named John Coawn sings a really nice vocal track with pretty good annunciation. The words are the same. I think that I'm going to record a version of this. Danny Brown |

Subject: RE: lyr req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 17 Mar 05 - 01:47 PM The lyrics of the 'strange fruit' version has little to do with the old fiddle tune; I agree with Tiktok that it is modern, perhaps with a wee bit of a steal from Abel Meerapol (Lewis Allan). Probably by Mark Johnson and Clawgrass- Thread 13719, post by Margo: Sally Ann |
Subject: RE: lyr req: Sally Ann (tune: Sail Away Ladies) From: Teggere Date: 16 Mar 05 - 11:35 PM I have been trying to find the correct words to the bore strange fruit verse for days now. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann From: Teggere Date: 16 Mar 05 - 08:25 PM I don't know, I am just getting into Bluegrass music, and I found Sally Ann listed, but I don't believe it's all there, maybe it's not a written song, maybe it's handed down, and sung this way, or that way depending on the band. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sally Ann From: GUEST,TikTok Date: 16 Mar 05 - 04:59 PM If that Sally Anne is traditional, I'll eat my hat. Sourcing? The ballad form has obvious literary touches, and I bet it was written in the past twenty years. |
Subject: Lyr Add: SALLY ANNE From: Teggere Date: 16 Mar 05 - 12:24 PM SALLY ANNE Traditional With love in his heart and flowers in his hand, Johnny proposed to Sally Anne. And Sally shivered as she said, I'll love you till the day I'm dead. Johnny got married in his one good suit, But the ride from the church bore strange fruit. Down by the road, you can hear her cry. That they hung from a tree, she watched him die. ( could be they hung him from a tree) (Chorus) Who's gonna dance with Sally Anne? Who's gonna touch her tremblin' hand? When the fiddler takes the stand, Who's gonna dance with Sally Anne? Sally attends every wedding 'round here, Looking for her Johnny dear. You can feel them in the room, If the fiddler plays that tune. Chorus Sail away ladies, sail away. Sail away ladies, sail away. Doc and Cellos cross the floor. (probably darkened shadows cross the floor) Ghostly love, a dance once more. When the wedding bells ring in that town, A ghostly virgin strolls the ground.
