Subject: RE: Mean Momma Blues From: RiGGy Date: 18 Sep 05 - 02:37 PM My FAVORITE line from ANY song I've ever heard is in the Jimmie Rodgers version: " I've been from several places, and I'm going to be from here " As an old guy who seems to have moved at least every 18 months since I was 18, this lyric has the ring of intense truth. Riggy |

Subject: Lyr Add: JUGBAND SONG (David Bromberg) From: harpgirl Date: 09 Feb 00 - 10:50 PM ...hey Bunch! Jugband Song by David Bromberg Well she's got eyes like crystal waters Lips like sherry wine, A body like fine brandy and a soul Like turpentine. Oh, Mama, You treat your daddy so damn mean, When I ask for water, She brings me gasoline, She brings me gasoline. I say watch out now mama, Don't you treat big David bad, You don't watch your step You're bound to make big David mad. Oh, Mama, You treat your daddy so damn mean, Now,when I ask for water, She brings me gasoline, She brings me gasoline. Oh won't you tell me now sweet mama, how can you stand to see me cry? She said, "Look out now, papa, I could stand to see you die." I said, mama You treat your daddy so damn mean, Oh when I ask for water, She brings me gasoline, She brings me gasoline. Y'know, my woman, she so doggone evil, She's evil all the time, She wants you to kill me so you'll have it on your mind. Oh, mama, You treat your daddy so damn mean, Oh, when I ask for water She brings me gasoline, She brings me gasoline. She's got eyes like crystal waters Lips like sherry wine, A body like fine brandy and a soul Like turpentine Oh, mama, You treat your daddy so damn mean, Now, when I ask for water, She brings me gasoline, she brings me gasoline compliments of the harpster

Subject: RE: Mean Momma Blues From: puzzled Date: 08 Feb 00 - 11:39 AM bromberg calls it "jug band tune" or maybe "jug band song". I believe that he is given the composer credit but i don't have the album to look it up. I love this song. I perform it a lot. It is way simple and way cool. I always get a good audience response. and harmonica players love playing along |
Subject: RE: Mean Momma Blues From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 08 Feb 00 - 10:38 AM Nothing in the All Music Guide under this title but Mean Mama Blues is in versions by Rambling Jack Elliott,Marty Robbins, Doc Watson and Slim Gaillard. Muddy Waters' Meanest Woman Blues includes the line about asking for water and bringing gasoline ...John Lee Hooker's Mean mean woman and Roy Orbison's Mean Woman Blues are completely different. RtS |
Subject: RE: Mean Momma Blues From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 08 Feb 00 - 10:20 AM I don't know the Bromberg version but many of the lines are familiar from other artists: ??Big Joe Turner, Jimmy Rushing?? RtS |
Subject: RE: Mean Momma Blues From: GUEST,BMendelson@aol.com Date: 08 Feb 00 - 10:10 AM I know the song you are asking about. I am not sure where to find it in my Bromberg collection, but would appreciate it if you could tell me on which Bromberg album this song appears. i'm afraid I don't know who wrote it. I have heard of it under a different name. I have got to think about the name i know the song by. I will get back to you when i remember. |
Subject: Lyr Add: JUGBAND SONG (David Bromberg) From: puzzled Date: 08 Apr 99 - 12:30 AM I remember hearing Dave Bromberg sing a tune that went like this:
She's got eyes like crystal water,
I say, watch out now, mama.
Oh, won't you tell me now, sweet mama,
You know my woman, she so doggone evil,
Did he write this tune or is it an old blues tunes from someone else? |
