Subject: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: katlaughing Date: 08 Apr 99 - 03:32 AM Hi, couldn't find them on a website. They were on a BBC America drama series which I love called Hammish Macbeth, posing as a ceilidh band. This drama is filmed in Plonkett, in Scotland, and surrounding areas. Have any of you heard of this band or know where I can find out more about them? Thanks, katlaughing |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 08 Apr 99 - 05:59 AM Kat, Could you be looking for the Incredible String Band which recorded in the late 60's and early 70's? Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: AndyG Date: 08 Apr 99 - 06:41 AM Kat, I'm sure I read something about Mike Heron / Robin Williamson doing something like this on the site I'm giving a link to. They were the mainstay of The Incredible String Band. Now, of course, I can't find the reference. AndyG (long-time/old-time/big-time ISB fan). |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: Steve Parkes Date: 08 Apr 99 - 08:03 AM No, no, guys - Hamish McBeth is a tv comedy drama cop detective series, which doesn't leave much room for getting old bands back together. I don't remember that particular episode, but I stopped watching it when I realised it was the same every week. Read the books!! They're far better than the tv series that's only loosely based on them. You'll find Hamish is a short dark-haired islander, not a tall fair-haired Glaswegian; and there are no cardboard cut-out stock characters in Lloch Dubh. Tirade over! Sorry, Kat, can't help with details of the band, but they were probably (aah, a faint and distant memory slowly struggles to the surface of my mind!) - they were, I think, an actual band who were credited under their real name at the end - but I don't know who they were! Maybe if no 'Catters know, you could ask the mighty Beeb itself? Steve |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: AndyG Date: 08 Apr 99 - 08:23 AM Ah Steve, I know what Hamish McBeth was and indeed I saw a couple of episodes, (which is incredibly unusual and I can't remember why I was watching TV). But I do remember reading something, somewhere on the 'net about the band that appeared in that show, (which I didn't see), and it could well have been on the ISB pages.

Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: katlaughing Date: 08 Apr 99 - 10:24 AM Thank you, "Wolfie" (hope you don't mind the nickname, ever since I read that is what Mozart's nickname was, I've wanted to call someone that!)***SMIlE*** If you don't like it, I promise not to use it again. As you can see, guys, it really is the Fling band. I know about the String one and in fact had to check my typing because it seemed so natural to put that in instead. They were billed in the credits as the IFB and so that is their real name. In that episode they were just a bunch of townfolk who got together and were called the Ceilidh Band. There are some new episodes starting here on April 13th. I suspect the reason Hamish wound up tall and fair is because, in my opinion, Robert Carlyle (the Full Monty) does such a grand job of acting. I will read the books, though, good to know they are so good. Thanks, katlaughing |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: GUEST,Malkie Date: 21 Nov 01 - 08:40 PM The Incredible String Band were originally Clive Palmer,Robin Williamson, and Mike Heron. Clive left the band after the first LP "The Incredible String Band" and Mike and Robin performed on the second "The Ten thousand Spirits or the layers of the Onion" This would have been around 1968 if my memory serves me. The came the double album "The wee Tam and the big Huge" which was about as mad as things can get. My wife wont let me play the albums when shes at home but sometimes I sing MAYA at the top of my voice. The string band were always a very aquired taste. I could tell you more if you havent already found a site somewhere. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: GUEST,Jock Morris @ work in Edinburgh Date: 22 Nov 01 - 04:24 AM Think you'll find it was filmed in and around 'Plockton', just North of Kyle of Lochalsh. Tall? Robert Carlyle? He's only 5' 3" as far as I know. Sorry, I've never heard of the Incredible Fling Band. Scott |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: GUEST,Jock Morris @ work in Edinburgh Date: 22 Nov 01 - 04:45 AM Quick search on google gives this link: http://incredibleflingband.visualnet.com/ Seems to be a ceilidh band from Kyle of Lochalsh, so local to where the series was filmed. Nice to see the Beeb using local talent rather than bringing a band up from Glasgow or Edinburgh. Scott |

Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: leeneia Date: 10 Apr 07 - 09:20 AM I have read a number of books about Hamish, if not all of them, and he has red hair. A Scot might say that the characters seem stereotyped, but I have been to the far north of Scotland twice, and I enjoy reading the books because I can picture vividly the landscapes in which the stories are set. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: Helen Date: 10 Apr 07 - 06:40 PM John Don, welcome! It always a treat to see the musicians themselves pop up in these threads. I'm sure katlaughing will be happy to see you here "in person" when she drops back into the thread. I used to watch Hamish Macbeth when it was on tv here in Oz but it isn't on these days. I'm sure it will get repeated in the near future, though. Helen |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: Helen Date: 10 Apr 07 - 06:43 PM I forgot to say that I find it a bit strange watching Robert Carlyle in HM after seeing him convincingly portray a near-psychotic aggressive bloke in Trainspotting. Helen |

Subject: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: GUEST,Hamish Macbeth TV Show Newbie Date: 08 Jun 11 - 10:21 PM Love the show. Watched it because I liked the books, but I like the show much better. Hamish is really the only likable character in the books, and he's kind of annoying sometimes, too; the rest - regulars and extras - I don't really like very well or feel like they're real people. On the show, however, I like all the people. As for Hamish himself, in the books he's tall, thin, and red-haired. On the show (Robert Carlyle) he's short-ish (5'8" according to IMDB), also thin, and brownish-sandy-haired. I'm digging for more info on the band; this thread is pretty old. |
Subject: RE: The Incredible Fling Band- ever heard of? From: GUEST,Muriel Date: 24 Feb 15 - 06:27 PM I know this band who are the incredible fling band. Sadly the lead passed away a couple of years back. He was called Willie Beaton. The band are great and the real deal. I worked at Kishorn and the band played local gigs around that area, Lochcarron etc. Last time I saw them was at the final Skye festival, they play Scottish music and folk songs. I particularly liked Newfoundland and also Waggon wheel, long before the old crow medicine show. |
