Probably not spelling it right and that might be the problem, but I can't find it in the DT or thread search. I thought we just had one on this tune/song.

I've got a copy of this by Matt Armour, the Peripatetic Grampianite... I'll transcribe it when I get a minute

I know the Grey Funnel Line. It's a song which Tom Lewis sings.
Check him out at Tom's Web-site

...written by Cyril Tawney - a wonderful performer, saw at the Dartmoor festival last year. For them as don't know, this shipping line is tongue in the cheek for the Royal Navy. DrJohn

Cyril is still alive and kicking and living in Leeds Yorkshire England About twenty five years ago he contracted lukiemia (cant' spell it ) and we all had benifit concerts at our local folk clubs in aid of him but the old bugger outlasted most of those who collected for him. (bugger is a term of affection across here) He served in the Royal Navy Submarines based at Portsmouth If anyone would like to send him a message I can pass it on for you. Cheers Bill

Bill, as I said I saw him at a club down there in the home counties several years ago he probably doesn't remember me but give him my best regards anyway.

Hi Bill please pass on my best wishes. Cyril is the only person I know who can write songs that are accessible to people who were not in the Andrew but still capture the essence of lower deck life. Do you know if Cyril has done any more research into RN songs since he published Grey Funnel lines?

Pete M

Can someone post the lyrics to the parody?

Give Cyril "best regards" from Sandy and Caroline Paton. We met him at the Princess Louise in London in '58. We were all just children, of course!

Sandy

Still transcribing, but the chorus goes somethig like:

..What bastard decided that I wouldn't work,
To bring the fish home from the sea?
What bastard dressed up in a grey flannel suit
Is making decisions for me, dear God...

Like I said, Matt Armour has it on 'Memories and Rage' (probably not available), but he wrote it, and apologises on the sleeve to Cyril for the title.

I dooes't seem to be the same parody as the one that I was talking about, mine was about your white washing being hung to dry on 'The Grey Flannel Line.

It is of great satisfaction to me that the majority of the discussion here has been about the original and it's author.

FWIW, some years ago Debby McClatchey was trying to round up song titles containing the names of spices and herbs. Grey Fennel line was one such, along with Oh Cinnamon, Where You Gonna Run To.

Bill, yes please - pass on my thanks for his work - when I was a mere child in the late sixties/early seventies I lived in Plymouth,- my Parents saw him perfom, and I know his Mayflower Garland album word for word. In fact, I heard it for the first time in about twenty years about a month ago and surprised myself by how much I remembered. It is a source of pride for me that I learnt ballet at Geraldine Lamb's - the school where the binmen of Beacon Park susposedly learnt to be quiet on their feet! He has such a gorgeous voice!

Cheers,

Mo
