It's a BBC/Masterpiece Theater adaptation of the oscar winning 1984 film, "Big Brother, Where Are't Thou?"

Bill
No code - it's "reality" TV - God help us!!   I'd explain it if I could...   I cannot find words to describe how it makes me feel.... I can't watch it, but when it's "on" downstairs... :-(

I didn't go to the pub, I found solace in a bottle of Woodford Reserve!!

Oh well..   Going motorbikin with my son and some old friends in the English lakes, this weekend!! Now, THAT is reality!! :-)

          Regards to all... Spot

We have it in Australia too. Because of Big Brother we no longer see Futurama, so you see I have a personal hatred for this crap.

The fact that they keep bringing it back again and again seems to suggest that it's popular, but it is also very cheap to put on. (Idiots with no self-esteem unfortunately come by the dozen.) I think that by now, (what, 6 or 7 series?), there's actually hardly anybody watching. There are maybe just enough interested viewers to provide the parcel of idiots for the next series.

Apparently it's the 8th series, it's going to be heavily policed after the bullying and racist comments that went on in the Jade Goody/Shilpa Shetty "Celebrity" version last year and there are plans to dynamite the house when it's over. I say skip the next 8 weeks and dynamite the sucker now!

I don't watch it, I will be getting a lot more sewing done!

In the last Australian series there was a bit of controversy over a turkey-slapping incident. They got away with it, so I guess it's open slather for the current inmates.

Hallo all...

Interesting to note that , as yet, no-one has leapt to its defence, eh? How does the TV company make money out of it? Who pays for the construction/maintenance etc of the house? Oh..hang on a bit... It's probably ME and YOU and all the other innocent suckers!! Hmmm..it's a good job my wife deals with the licence!!(ok...I know its probably not BBC)

On a different slant, why are there more adverts for mindless shite than actual decent programmes?? ( ok...I know - money!!)

Regards to all...a very disgruntled Spot

No need for blood-letting Pirandello. If you press your finger on one, or a combination of, the other-numbered buttons on the remote, as if by magic the programme will change to something else!

It's called exercising choice. :-)

It's cheap to produce, it feeds into the tabloid press, giving them a continuing series of headlines without any effort, when there's nothing much happening (or even when it is - real news gets banished to the inside pages). The result is that lots of readers build up a common curiosity which means they watch the programme, which means the papers regurgitating it sell more copies, and get more advertising revenue. Positive feedback. And that applies whether the programme gets slagged off or not - in fact being slagged off probably helps the process.

It's a brilliant marketing concept.

The sad thing is the whole thing could probably work just as well with something good at the heart of it instead of rubbish.

Pat yourself on the back for not having it, America. This makes Jerry Springer look like a high quality product.

But there is an American Big Brother series, isn't there?

Maybe folks over there are more sensible: Decide they don't like it, so they don't watch it. Instead of saying they don't like it, watching it anyway, and then moaning that they didn't like it.

For the luvvamike, it's SPRING, it's daylight 'til damn near ten o'clock, go outside and piddle about in the garden 'til it's over!

(Does not watch 'reality' shows. To my shame, have become addicted to a certain UK decorating show, though.)

Producer and chairman of Endemol Productions Peter Bazalgette is the great-great-grandson of 19th century civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette who engineered the great London Sewerage system that many still rely on to this day. These works included the Northern Outfall Sewer which takes shit from the West End of London, through east London and into a processing plant at Beckton.

On a TV programme this week, Stephen Fry made the astute remark that Peter Bazalgette was undoing his great great-grandfather's works by "pumping shit back into our homes."

And to add to the thread creep - the original BB house stood not 500 yards from the new Abbey Mills Pumping Station.

I can't understand how anyone who is reasonably clever can watch such a bloody stupid programme and then talk about it, It will be on GMTV and in the newspapers, I think that it is shit, just a bunch of people that you would avoid in the pub/club and street, these people should be have pity than scolded, that also goes for the people that watch it as well.

How about this for a BIG BROTHER TWIST.

You put the contestants in a house with no food and just leave them til eventually they begin to kill and eat each other one at a time. Then when there's eventually only one contestant left, you bring him out and SHOOT HIM!!!!

All good clean family fun!!

The sad thing about it is that it would probably be possible to put out a programme which would have the same characteristics of cross media popularity and feedback, which would not be degrading to its participants and viewers.

I am sure most people get into television with ambitions to make genuinely good programmes, not just to churn out rubbish that must embarrass them. There's something wrong with a system that twists them into this kind of race to the bottom.
