AIR -- Roast beef of old England

      G            D          G          D
Come listen good folks and a tale I'll relate
       Em         Bm               A       7    D
How a staymaker, faith, would have made himself great
          C                      G          C
And from mending of Stays took to mending of State

Am       D       G   /D
Oh the reformer of England,
    Am         D7          G   (key change: Em A &c)
And oh, the reformer Tom Paine.

The staymaker once an Exciseman was made
Where he learnt all the tricks the smugglers e'er play'd
And some tricks of his own, till kick'd out of the trade

Next America saw him o'erflowing with spite
'Gainst the sons of Old England he'd read and he'd write
And brandish his goose-quill, but ne'er choose to fight

When peace was one settl'd he'd stay there no more,
For Peace and Tom Paine could ne'er live on one shore
But transported to France madea hellish uproar

Now, protected by Laws, he strives to o'erthrow
At Britain he aims his unnatural blow
And would lay all the true sons of Liberty low

Let the Jacobins take him--they soon will requite him
Since riot, and rapine, and murder delight him
But let us live in peace, if 'twere only to spite him

Unite then, ye britons, unite in applause
To them men that stand forth for our Rights and our Laws
And from runagate Traitors defend our good cause

Then up with the Cuase of Old England
And down with Sedition and Paine

Our true British Freedom for ages shall stand,
In spite of Sedition and Pain's hellish band
And 'God save the King' shall refound through the land

So God save the King of Old England
And down with Sedition and Pain

[c1791. Subject is Thomas Paine, 1737-1809, American radical.]

Here's to Tom Paine (Steve Tilston)

See the pigeons bless the statue
Crown of stone wins no respect
Showing neither fear nor favour
Heart of stone deserves neglect

CH:   Here's to Tom Paine, the hidden story
Time will proclaim the Rights of Man
Here's to Tom Paine, true England's glory
Never a better born Englishman
Never a better born Englishman

New and old worlds colliding
Patriots and lobsterbacks
Waiting in the wings deciding
Time conspires to blur the tracks   CH

Talk about an Age of Reason
Grind the tyrants into dust
Loud will be the cries of treason
From the ones who rule the roost   CH

So raise a glass to an unsung hero
Rise up from your rags and bones
A heart of oak who showed no fear
When squeezing blood from hearts of stone   CH

Oh well . . .

Tom Paine's Bones

As I dreamed out one evening
By a river of discontent
I bumped straight into old Tom Paine
As running down the road he went
He said, "I can't stop right now, child,
King George is after me
He'd have a rope around my throat
And hang me on the Liberty Tree"

But I will dance to Tom Paine's bones
Dance to Tom Paine's bones
Dance in the oldest boots I own
To the rhythm of Tom Paine's bones
I will dance to Tom Paine's bones
Dance to Tom Paine's bones
Dance in the oldest boots I own
To the rhythm of Tom Paine's bones

"I only talked about freedom
And justice for everyone
But since the very first word I spoke
I've been looking down the barrel of a gun
They say I preached revolution
Let me say in my defence
That all I did wherever I went
Was to talk a lot of common sense"

Old Tom Paine he ran so fast
He left me standing still
And there I was, a piece of paper in my hand
Standing at the top of the hill
It said, "This is the Age Of Reason
These are The Rights Of Man
Kick off religion and monarchy"
It was written there in Tom Paine's plan

Old Tom Paine, there he lies
Nobody laughs and nobody cries
Where he's gone or how he fares
Nobody knows and nobody cares

But I will dance to Tom Paine's bones
Dance to Tom Paine's bones
Dance in the oldest boots I own
To the rhythm of Tom Paine's bones
I will dance to Tom Paine's bones
Dance to Tom Paine's bones
Dance in the oldest boots I own
To the rhythm of Tom Paine's bones

(Graham Moore)

Great song that Diane. What a brilliant performer is Graham. He did such a smashing gig at my club last year, together with Gill Redmond.
Review Review Graham Moore & Gill Redmond

People can listen to it at http://www.bymoore.co.uk/cd2.html Excellent CD and well worth buying.

I first read some of Paine's work way back when in high school, if memory serves. I thought he had many good, common sensical (sorry) ideas. I've bumped into him more as my interests have broadened. His bootprints are spread through much of Europe and North America. He is a guy worthy of a good biography. Perhaps some one has already done one.

John Keane's 1996 work, 'Tom Paine - a Political Life' is both readable and comprehensive.

There have been several good books written on his life andJohn Keane's bookis probably the best. I also recommend David Powell's Tom Paine: The Greatest Exile. If you want a good book on Paine's ideas, then read Thomas Paine by Gregory Cleays.
