Subject: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: PeadarOfPortsmouth Date: 30 May 07 - 11:30 PM Hey all, Headed up to Nova Scotia from July 12 - 22, in part to see the tall ships. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions about where we can go during the trip for either a session (song or irish trad) or has recommendations about places to see good music along the way. We're still nailing down the itinerary, so any suggestions are welcome. BTW - we'll be in Halifax for the tall ships on the weekend of July 13 & 14, so if any shanty sessions are planned, I'd love to represent the Portsmouth NH crowd. Peter |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Jim Lad Date: 30 May 07 - 11:37 PM Where else are you going in Nova Scotia? |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST Date: 30 May 07 - 11:39 PM Are you looking for a particular type of venue, or just any venue with good music? Like concert halls or restaurants? For good Irish music, I can respond back in a day or two for places in Halifax. The first place that comes to mind for Irish music in Nova Scotia is Cape Breton; but that's at least two to three hours of a drive to get to the bridge into the island. |

Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: PeadarOfPortsmouth Date: 31 May 07 - 12:09 AM We're (tentatively) going to be in Halifax the weekend of 7/13 & 14, Cape Breton 7/16-18; Truro 7/19 and Yarmouth 7/21. I'm planning to get the Post once we get to Cape Breton, but if there are any leads ahead of time, they're welcome. I'm personally looking for shanty sing-alongs and anything celtic (songs nd tunes). Of course, the girlfriend probably wouldn't mind a night of jam band or blues if there's a recommendation. Pub settings are probably best after a day of driving, but I'm open to the guidance of fellow 'catters if there's a concert setting that shouldn't be missed. |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST Date: 31 May 07 - 12:54 AM I haven't been to Yarmouth, but for Halifax; I can get a pub directory, and find out where there would be open-mic's and jam sessions. There might be links to the pubs in their business directory, I'll search on google.com for you. There must be quite a few places in Halifax, and the surrounding areas, where they have shantys and celtic music. I'll have a list of good venues later in the morning or around noon posted.

Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Jim Lad Date: 31 May 07 - 03:13 AM So for Cape Breton, you should be there on a Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. For the Wednesday, forget about jamming. You will have the time of your life at the Normaway Inn. There's a Ceilidh in the Barn which is the best of its kind and is always played by at least one of Cape Breton's finest fiddlers. The dancing is no caller, none needed, the barn will be packed, it's cheap and the music and dancing are entirely authentic. Not just a show for the tourists. Check out the Red Shoe in Mabou for a folk night and The Dory (if I remember right) in Cheticamp for some extremely friendly Acadian music. The creamery in Port Hawksbury puts on a grand show but I think that's on a Sunday & Sandy McLean, if he ever gets in here, will tell you about the Sunday gatherings in Judique where you will be welcome to join in. Piper's Pub in Antigonish is not too far from Truro & The Yellow Cello in Baddeck, the centre of Cape Breton, usually has fine entertainment every night. Avoid the Ceilidh in Baddeck. It's for tourists & not very good. The Keltic Lodge in Ingonish, Cape Breton is a Flagship Hotel $200 - $300 per night with fine dining and quiet lounge entertainment. Stop at the first convenient Tourist Information Centre as soon as you cross the Canso Causeway for the most up to date information at the time. Does that get you started? |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,meself Date: 31 May 07 - 06:07 AM For all the insider info. on Cape-Breton-style music events, you might want to sign on here for awhile. When you get to Halifax, grab a copy of The Coast - (is that the right name? it's a little early in the morning) - free 'alternative' paper, with a very thorough entertainment listing. Premier pubs for Celtic music: Auld Triangle (several Irish sessions), Celtic Corner Pub (Dartmouth - hop, skip, and jump from ferry landing), Stone Jug (Sat. night Irish session) ... Lots of bars with pub singing, but I don't know if you'll find a bona fide 'shanty session'. For blues: Bearly's (across the street from the Stone Jug). |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 31 May 07 - 07:12 AM Hi Peter, The Creamery concerts in Port Hawkesbury are on Tuesday evenings. A new Creamery hall is being built so I believe that the firehall will be the temporary venue. The performances are deeply rooted to the local culture and the audience is divided between tourists and locals. Admission is reasonable, seven or eight bucks, and the music first class. The sessions in Judique that Jim referred to don't take place during July and August, but there is always music there at the new Celtic Music Centre. http://www.celticmusicsite.com/ This site is loaded with concert and dance and jam session listings in Cape Breton: http://cbchoices.com/ For Halifax I suggest O'Carroll's Pub, The Old Triangle , and sometimes The Lower Deck. Perhaps George Seto will add more. All the best! Sandy |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: PeadarOfPortsmouth Date: 31 May 07 - 07:21 AM What a brilliant start! Looking on websites, you can't tell which places are authentic and which are shows for the tourists...and I HATE touristy spots. (Heck, I hate tourists, even though I'm going to be one.) Anyone familiar with the session at Henry House in Halifax? The Session.org has a listing for Saturday at 8, but the HH website doesn't mention music at all. Additions are welcome, but this truly is a great start. Cheers, Peter |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Jim Lad Date: 31 May 07 - 11:44 AM There's a folk society in Hamiflax which is into Sea Shanties, I think. You'll find Bev Somebody (A guy) on University Radio who's a good contact for that. |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,meself Date: 31 May 07 - 11:59 AM Henry House = the Stone Jug ... Irish sessions on Saturday nights ... place gets very crowded very early ... |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 31 May 07 - 06:55 PM Check the website thesession.org for Halifax listings. Also look at nssession.tripod.com. In Halifax, as stated above, one session is at the Henry House on Saturday night, starting around 8PM, and the Old TRiangle on Tuesday evenings around 8ish, and on Sunday afternoon starting around 1PM where they are playing for IRish Set Dancers. AS well, across the harbour, there is a CB fiddle session with Glenn Graham and Wendy MacIsaac on Sunday afternoon, starting around 4 or 5PM at the Celtic Corner. AND, Dave MacIsaac & Louis Benoit are at the Old Triangle on Monday nights and probably wouldn't mind some visiting musicians joining in. The web-sites for The Session and NS Sessions will give addresses to all of the listed places. |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,meself Date: 31 May 07 - 07:09 PM " ... probably wouldn't mind some visiting musicians joining in ... " I wouldn't necessarily COUNT on that ... |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Jim Lad Date: 31 May 07 - 09:49 PM No, they're not too keen on that. I think the Sunday afternoon is a bit more open though. |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Jim Lad Date: 31 May 07 - 09:52 PM What about the other place, Evans & Doherty played at before they bought shares in the Ould Triangle. Across from the Lower Deck. An Irishman owned it until a few years ago. Mr. Something! |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,meself Date: 31 May 07 - 10:40 PM I believe that would be O'Carroll's. Was owned by Mr. O'Carr-something-oll. |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Jim Lad Date: 31 May 07 - 11:41 PM Right. That's the one. Yes, don't go there! |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 01 Jun 07 - 07:29 AM When O'Carroll's Pub was owned by Jim O'Carroll it was a great spot. Kevan Evans and Brian Doherty played alternate weeks with Fran Doyle. Frankie Arab was at the piano for an early evening singsong. There was never any cover charge and Jim made a point of personally welcoming his customers. A few years ago it was sold, I believe, to the owner of the Split Crow Pub. They put on a cover charge and the music was changed somewhat, but it still at times has excellent entertainment. Just not the great place that it once was! |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,meself Date: 01 Jun 07 - 07:50 AM I've been in O'Carroll's a number of times the last few summers, and there was never a cover charge, and always very good music, good atmosphere, friendly staff, good food. Back in the good old days, I couldn't afford to step into a place like that, so I don't associate the place with any "rare ould times" sadly passed. |

Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,meself Date: 01 Jun 07 - 08:35 PM There's going to be a big blues festival going on in Truro at some point, with James Cotton, Buddy Guy, and various heavyweights. You might want to keep the girlfriend from finding out ... ! By the way, I think you'll give yourself a serious headache if you try to sort out 'tourist' events from 'authentic' events around here ... |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST Date: 03 Jun 07 - 09:52 PM Okay, I won't worry about the tourist/non-tourist distinction, unless there's something so prepackaged and (God-forbid) Disney-like that it'll give me convulsions...then I'll just need directions to the hospital. Thanks to everyone who weighed in. We're hoping to finalize the schedule this week and will be using this info extensively. Cheers, Peter |

Heather Dale, singer/songwriter from Toronto is the featured performer for the first hour. (Check out her site at HeatherDale.com) After the break there's a jam/open mike, it's pretty unstructured. Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Charley Noble Date: 05 Jun 07 - 03:53 PM Is Vince Morash still actively participating in one of these sessions in Halifax? He's a fine singer-songwriter and lives somewhere in teh greater Halifax area. I don't suppose anything exciting is going on at Privateer's Wharf. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,Harbour Folk Society Date: 06 Jun 07 - 12:37 AM Vince is still around and singing. He's put together his own group, Crossession. I'm not sure what he's doing in July. Julia |

Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Bee Date: 06 Jun 07 - 12:26 PM Wherever you end up going, you'll probably have a good time, be invited to somebody's house for an after-party, and meet all kinds of people. Maritimers and music is pretty much the best combination you can have. |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: PeadarOfPortsmouth Date: 10 Jul 07 - 08:54 AM Well, here we are two days before departure and we've got the music covered! Thanks again to everyone who offered guidance...and if you see red-bearded Yank with a cheap guitar and lost look on his face wandering around, be sure to say "hi." ;-) Peter |

Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,meself Date: 10 Jul 07 - 02:10 PM Last time I tried that, we tipped the damn thing. It wasn't my fault; you see, we were - oh, never mind ... it was all rather embarrassing, and I wasn't welcome at the cottage after that ... |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: Jim Lad Date: 10 Jul 07 - 02:53 PM What do you mean "After that"? |
Subject: RE: Venue suggestions for Nova Scotia From: GUEST,meself Date: 10 Jul 07 - 03:35 PM Okay, I wasn't exactly welcome there in the first place - "after that" I was, quote, "forbidden to ever set [my] stinking feet on [that] property again" unquote. Ah, but it was all in fun! |
