I remember seeing Mudge and Clutterbuck down at Les Cousins round about 1970. Was that the same guy?

Yes it was the Barn Folk Club, which was in the grounds of a rectory near the Broadway Bus Terminus. I was a friend of the organiser and floor singer at several of the city's clubs. This was the launch party - we tried to get Donovan, but he pulled out at the last minute so we got Paul Simon who we had never heard of.Until then there was the Dylan crowd and the traditionalists, somehow Paul united the two groups that evening and influenced both playing and song writing in the area. Then Dave Mudge started playing Angie and the folk scene exploded!So Paul was a bit of a catalyst. Heard Dave Mudge died tragically in 1998 but cannot find out how - I was a friend but lost touch, would be interested to learn more of his life after his move to Bristol and later London. The venue for that memorable evening has now been built over, sadly.

The other could possibly have been Dave Mudge. He was certainly one of the early movers & shakers of the folk scene in the area, albeit a couple of years before I was old enough to get into pubs.

That was an excellent show, especially the inclusion of the several excerpts from The Paul Simon Songbook

Triggered by this week's documentary, I've just discovered that the remastered CD version of The Paul Simon Songbook makes for delightful in-the-garden listening on the wireless headphones.

It's a bit hot out there though. Perhaps this is one occasion where having to come in to turn the vinyl over every 20 minutes wins over coming in to change CDs every 40 minutes!

He did ask to do a gig at the Bothy Folk Club in Southport, Lancs. Clive turned him down cos he reckoned £12 was too expensive. Maybe we could get him back now at that price?

Seeking twenty plus expenses, I went looking for a gig, but I got no offers

Paul Simon was excellent at three clubs we ran, "The Railway Tavern" at Catford, "The Green Man" on Blackheath( now a block of flats) and the Chiselhurst Caves.

I've never forgiven Paul Simon for not turning up when he was booked to appear at the Wemouth Folk Club in 1965.

I saw Paul play a brilliant concert in Liverpool in 2002. He was having a rather emotional night, because that was a gig he had promised to come back and do in 1965. Send him an email. He might yet rectify the situation too!

The only concern Martin Carthy ever had with Paul Simon was that Simon claimed all the credit for Scarborough Fair, instead of ' trad, arranged Simon '

Hmmm, the recording may have been at a private party but I believe he did perform at the folk club there.

I was interested in the 'folk club in Exeter', but when I listened to the programme it turned out that it was a private birthday party (in case anyone else who was in Exeter at the time is wondering why they weren't there).

I finally located and bought a reasonably priced copy of The Paul Simon Songbook on vinyl a few years ago. Of course, about a year later PS relented about keeping it deleted and it came out remastered on CD, which I also had to get. It is a very fine album.

Ah, if only minidisk had been invented to "collect" that session in Exeter, rather than (what I assume was) reel-to-reel tape. Still good to hear it, even with a bit of hiss.

Was that Davey Graham talking about Anji and how you could tell Paul got his version from Bert Jansch's, because it included Bert's "extras"?

I have heard them - on the BBC - he was fairly sanguine. No ranquor. Something about how Martin got the arrangement from someone else anyway. However I have heard of people asking on a one to one basis and Mr Placid was notso.

In this programme, Radio 2 uncovers the real story of Paul Simon's British residency, and the part it played in his creative formation. For years, fascination has surrounded the missing 13 months in the life and career of Paul Simon preceeding the rise to success in America of Simon and Garfunkel.

Simon spent what is probably one of the most famous 'gap' years in music history travelling around England, writing songs, playing tiny folk club venues and meeting future legends of the Folk scene such as Bert Jansch and Martin Carthy, Homeward Bound was famously penned on Widnes Station, and many of his most famous lyrics can be traced to British roots.

The programme includes interviews with Martin Carthy, Brian Protheroe, Al Stewart and many more and features a hitherto un-heard Paul Simon song, "The Northern Line", recorded in an Exeter Folk club in 1965.
