I'm looking for the origins and the tune for a song originally titled
"Run On", which also has alternate titles; and variations of the tune.

Hi, Jay -
Hope you don't mind that I moved you over to a specifically-titled thread. Can you tell us anything more about the song? Who sings it, what are the lyrics, where did you hear it?
If you have lyrics, please post what you know of the song. Titles can be misleading, so it's best to share whatever you have.

Very good overview here. (I was directed to this by a friend.)

NB: There is a link to the words Johnny Cash used at the bottom of the page. FYI.

From Elvis Presley: Original Versions of Songs He Sang:
Run On recorded by Elvis on Wednesday, 25 May, 1966
Written by: Traditional
Originally recorded by Golden Gate Quartet in 1947
Hear Elvis's version on: How Great Thou Art; Amazing Grace (CD 1)
Originally called the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet, the Golden Gate Quartet started singing together in the mid-1930s. They gradually moved from a pure gospel repertoire to include pop and jazz numbers. They moved from the USA to France in 1959 where they enjoyed considerable popularity. The Golden Gate Quartet's version of this song was released on Bluebird under the title," God's Gonna Cut 'Em Down." The number has also been recorded by Odetta, with the similar title, "God's Gonna Cut You Down."

GOD'S GONNA CUT YOU DOWN (RUN ON)
(Traditional)
As recorded by Johnny Cash on "American V: A Hundred Highways" (2006)

You can run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time.
Sooner or later God'll cut you down.
Sooner or later God'll cut you down.

Go tell that long-tongue liar.
Go and tell that midnight rider.
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter.
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down.
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down.

Well, my goodness gracious! Let me tell you the news.
My head's been wet with the midnight dew.
I've been down on bended knee
Talkin' to the man from Galilee.
He spoke to me in the voice so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of the angels' feet.
He called my name and my heart stood still
When he said, "John, go do My will!"

Go tell that long-tongue liar.
Go and tell that midnight rider.
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter.
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down.
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down.

You can run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time.
Sooner or later God'll cut you down.
Sooner or later God'll cut you down.

Well, you may throw your rock and hide your hand,
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man,
But as sure as God made black and white,
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light.

Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down.
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down.
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down.

There's a broadband connection at the Women's Center, so I was able to watch YouTube for the first time. The video for this cut was terrific.

Does anybody out there know who owns the rights to the song lyrics or if they are public domain?

"Traditional" lends me to believe they are so old they can be recorded by whomever.

Thanks!
