With so much talk about pollution caused by air traffic. Has anyone stopped to thank their lucky stars for cheap air fares ?

As a world traveller I think it's fantastic that ordinary working class people can see so many Europeans counties for the cost of a weekend in a local hotel.

Flights twenty years ago to European counties were so expensive.

Love

I have a tendancy to agree there.. In the last 10 years I would never have seen so much of the world - not just internationally but my own country, had air travel not worked out cheaper short term than rail or road. Scotland used to be a 2-3 day drive or an overnight rail journey with prohibitive costs for me. Now I can fly there in a few hours and still have change from £100.

My generation is the first of our family to go abroad for purposes other than giving 'Jerry' and 'the Bosche' a good hammering. One upon a time, Italy was as unavailable as the moon, Denmark was a history lesson and America a bad example to us all. Now I can go there and see for myself.

I don't believe it but:

As a permanent pricing feature, Skybus plans to make 10 seats on all flights aboard its 150-seat Airbus A319s available at $10 each way. Average fares will be pegged at about 50% of the going rate of other carriers serving the same markets.

I can't say I agree with the super-cheap flights but neither am I enamoured of the superficial responses of politicians. UK Tories are suggesting that everyone gets a nice 2000 miles/year allowance so we can all have our nice holidays. OK - that means that my yob cousin (trust me: he is a yob) and his mates can jet off to Dublin or wherever for debauched stag parties, but I (and a lot of other immigrants) can't afford to go visit our relatives once a year.

When they knock private/corporate jets on the head, as well as world/business/first class seats and *very* short haul flights, I'll start taking them seriously.

Oh - and another thing about cheap flights. I work for a small arts group. Cheap flights make international co-operation and networking possible for us, whereas they used to be solely for the well-funded mainstream arts groups.

I'm actually very pro-conservation but the current proposals will just 'inconvenience' the rich or well-funded, while cutting the rest of us out of the picture all together. Level up the playing field, politicians!

I do hope flights will get much more expensive again even if that means I will not be able to do some journeys I certainly would enjoy. I will do other journeys instead.

Rich people will always be able to buy what they consider worth buying like for instance space travel. So what? Conservation is served best by many people changing parts of their way of life. Money is the best incentive to change and it will work not as good with people who have more money than others. I do not want to wait with conservation until the too big gap between rich and poor is closed.

You don't have to suffer a guilty conscience for getting cheap flights. Just make the most out of them. Instead of driving (which pollutes) fly, but don't hop and skip all over by air. Stay longer at your destination, use rapid transit when you're there, fly less in general, but do it affordably.

I drool over those Qatar Airlines advs. on the BBC News channel.
Limo from your door to their first class lounge with superb food and liquors, check-in facilitated for you, a seat on the five-star plane that reclines into a bed, five-star meal and fine wines, lovelies from the Arabian Nights to serve your wishes, and on to your reserved suite in a five-star resort in Doha.
Now leaving from New York and Washington, D. C.

Now that is what air travel should be!

Rationing by price always has the downside that the rich people can just sail through unaffected. It'd be better to have a ceiling on the number of flights anyone could have, or the number of air miles, or whatever.

Won't happen of course, the people whom make the rules would lose out and that can't be allowed to happen.

This planet has flourished, cooked, and frozen in irregular cycles since it first solidified, which was a considerable time before we arrived here. It has switched polarity an unknown number of times, and not one so-called scientific expert today can predict when this might happen again or even what would ensue if it did. For the last sixty years the major powers have blasted Earth with nuclear weapons without a thought of long term consequences. In these enlightened times power stations continue churning out radioactive waste that cannot be disposed of safely, and the best suggestion that scientists can come up with is 'Bury it.'
So my cheap'n'cheerful £40 return flight to Malaga is the harbinger of doom is it? Yeah, right.

Hmmmm, Monty Python time again, I see.
Did they ever do a sketch around a South Sea islander being harangued by journos and scientists for polluting the atmosphere by lighting a fire to cook on, while in the distance a mushroom cloud balloons up from what had been an island paradise?
Or one about a steward on the sinking Titanic being berated for leaving a tap running?

Cheap air fares are one thing, but then there's a matter of
lodging once you get there. I'd trade the air fares of the
1990's for a return to reasonably priced (in US dollars)
hotels in London. I know, I know, it's the exchange rate
and all.

There's a resurgence in tourism by North Americans to
Central and South America as a result of the high Euro.

Buenos Aires and Santiago, anyone? Tierra Del Fuego?

Irish carrier Ryanair, Europe's largest budget airline, are to start charging passengers for using the toilet while flying, chief executive Michael O'Leary said on Friday.

"One thing we have looked at in the past and are looking at again is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door so that people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny in future," he told BBC television.

He said this would not inconvenience passengers travelling without cash. "I don't think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound."

O'Leary has a reputation as a cost cutter, expanding Ryanair by offering low headline fares and charging extra for items such as additional luggage.

Last week, Ryanair announced it was to shut all check-in desks at airports and have passengers check in online instead.

"We're all about finding ways of raising discretionary revenue so we can keep lowering the cost of air travel," he said.

I just LOVE the "stop cheap flights because rich people benefit as well" theme that is emerging here.

I am what you might call comfortable, and travel all around the world, seeing what my parents could only dream of. (Flying over to Canada skiing tomorrow for example.)

I appreciate cheap flights too. I also appreciate the cost of bananas and Dulux paint.

the amazing arrogance of some people....

Writing songs about being poor is ok. Writing songs about being envious of others can be OK too. If I were to write about what troubles me these days, I would be a bore.

Oh, I wear my lovely Rolex and I fly Ryanair,
10 years ago I put my faith in a prat called Tony Blair
He went off, the markets crashed, whatever can I do?
Get off my arse and make my stash, if you thought on, you could too.

All together now....

What next from Ryanair.

Maybe taking the toilets out altogether for more seats.

Then charging a £1 for a sick bag with elastic band to seal it
Then charging a £1 for a bog roll
Then charging a £1 for a urine bottle
Then charging a £1 for a screw on cap for the bottle
Then charging a £1 for a bed pan
Then charging a £1 for a bed pan bag that holds the smell in.

What makes me laugh is the way you see adverts for £1 flights each way. You then go online and start booking.
By the time you have finished, the flight costs near to £100 return.

"There's a resurgence in tourism by North Americans to

Yes, that's one of the reasons we use the Pound Sterling in London.

Hotel prices have always been relatively high in London due to lack of space but I would expect prices to start coming down as it seems there is a budget price hotel being built on every other corner these days.

Are we sure Michael O'Leary wasn't taking the mike out of the press?

We decided to try to attend a nieces graduation from med school. We're not rich. I started adding up the possible costs of driving or flying. Hit the internet a little, and came up with round trip tickets, Michigan to St.Louis, under $50.00 each. Sorry, but it never occured to me to feel guilty about it for a second.

It will only "cost a pound to spend a penny" if you need to spend a penny... I'm pretty sure that if you don't take advantage of the airport bars (or the in-flight refreshments) before you fly, you can manage a couple of hours without needing to go. Or go before you board...

Or you can gorge on red meat, eggs and bananas the week before you go, then take a laxative before you board just so you can get your full pound's worth whilst in the air... just let me know if you're on the same flight as me so I can give it 10 mins, or open the window!

Whoops my finger slipped!

Cheap Flights and airlines are a blessing giving people the opportunities to holiday outside of the UK that they might not have done years ago. However, after having got over my fear of flying I decided to go for long distance and travel the 9 hours to Cuba and was amazed how quick the time passed by and it wasn't really so bad the good company of another couple sat close by it made the 9 hours seem like 4 or 5. Before the furthest I would have gone on a cheap (quick, less time up in the sky) trip would have been to Majorca or braver still to Turkey which is 4 hours, nothing wrong with Spain or the Balearics but there is a whole lot more out there to see. Cheap 'no frills' flights haven't encouraged me personally to fly anymore often.

We have found Aer Lingus on the LGW route to Malaga and Monarch on the LGW route to Alicante to be excellent and little if any difference in price from easyjet and the like.

It's well worth paying for extra legroom seats with Monarch - little difference bewteen that at BA Euroclub.

It's a great pity that GB Airways packed up - you could normally upgrade to Euroclub at Alicante for €50 on the return flight.

Count your blessings, y'all. From Juneau, Alaska to Seattle, Washington, our nearest out of state destination at 909 air miles, were I to step on a plane today it would cost me, with tax, $995.79. If I could wait for two weeks, the cost would be $539.79.

Alaska Airlines (Seattle based company- not Alaskan, at all) has no competitor in Juneau so we pay top dollar. If we could start our flight from Anchorage, a town with many airlines, we could find good deals. But first, we would have to fly to Anchorage and that would cost $292.

That's the bad part about living here. The good part is that I get to live in Juneau.

Cheap flights be buggered.
Last year I paid more for a return flight to Amsterdam from for my daughter, with BMI Baby from East Midlands about 1 and and half hours journey. Rob dogging bastards. In the end it cost more than if I had paid for my daughter to fly from Humberside to Amsterdam return with KLM, which is only 20 minutes journey.

We flew with KLM to Lima (Peru) and on another occasion to Quito (Ecuador). The cabin crew were excellent and we were upgraded to a flat bed on on the overnight leg of one trip because 2 Frenchmen in the seats next to us kept complaining about the headphones. The Purser knew all the tricks and upgraded us instead!

Never used BMI but a frequent flier friend refers to them as British Mudland.

After watching the 'Airline' programmes on UK TV I am surprised that people are still prepared to chance Easyjet. On the otherhand it makes people aware that you should take the time to read ALL the small printed rules CAREFULLY on the form before setting off for the airport, preferably.
