We're just still doing our regular stuff... working, knitting, fiddling, etc.

Mister's gotten to be quite the brewer lately. And, he's bought himself a German lute-guitar. And an oud, but neither one of us knows how to play it yet.

I've been doing whatever I can to make it rain. So far, I've tried washing the cars, leaving car windows open, leaving dry laundry on the line, and walking to the other end of the property without an umbrella. Under ordinary circumstances, any one of the above would guarantee a rainstorm within minutes, but not this year.

Had a folk festival last weekend, but saw little of it 'cause Rita & I were in the crafts. But we made some money, and we avoided the worst of the rain when packing up.....so we're doin' ok.

......but now I can see all the stuff I avoided while preparing for the festival. By my calculations, it now takes 14 months to recover from an annual event.

sore back, but that's normal, & I'm off to the (heated) pool soonish to do my normal walking-around-in-the-moving-water-to-help-strengthen-my-back thing.

It's cold & raining here (good thing in a water-restricted city, as long as it doesn't just wet the pavements), and I'm also packing for a festival this weekend.

Dunno why I want to spend a few nights on a very comfortable inflated mattress, with my snuggly 80% down quilt, in a tent in a town that the forecast sez. will be rainy & windy & cold. All I can say is the music & companionship better be good!

Hi, Kim-
Things are just ducky here in the California foothills. I went on a gold mine hike with Debby McClatchy today and got caught in a downpour, but we had a good time. Found petrified wood and square nails, but no gold (and, most importantly, no rattlesnakes).
My wife went to see a guru in San Francisco and missed the gold mine.

Weather is great, boy do I wish I would get actually hired at the job I've been temping in for months and months and months, the twins have turned 12(!!) and my leg is almost healed. Things are good or better, on average (oh, yeah, did I mention that I got to do some analyses, my favorite thing?). Nice to read everybody's news. Thanks for asking!

Let's see: a fire and intrusion alarm system, for one thing -- with a collection of paintings (including a 350-year-old Japanese ema) very conservatively valued at US$ 107,000; a photo collection valued at around US $15,000; about 80 or so computers and about 10 servers, not to mention a book collection with an estimated value of around US $10,000,000 I finally convinced the city that spending US$ 10K to protect it might just possibly be a Good Investment.

I'll order some scrim tomorrow, but the stage lights came yesterday. And I told one of the staff she could spend a hundred bucks to fix the top of the fish tank, more if she needed but she'd have to ask me.

US$2,500 to make a closet under the back stairs and to put a window in the back (employees') door.

Just, you know, generally wasting the taxpayers' money.

I'm with you, Sandra, the music & companionship better be BLOODY good. As I round up gumboots, raincoat, parka, extra socks, hot water bottle etc, I'm thinking I must be mad. I'm also considering a slightly bigger tarp. I put away a sopping wet tent after Snalbans (even with the giant tarp), and will probably do so again this time, but at least we would have a dry bit to sit under at breakfast time and when we aren't indoors with the crowd. You'll be glad to know that they have the evening sessions indoors, Sandra.

Otherwise, I'm doing very well. Haven't had a cold or anything for ages - I am thanking Astraforte for that. Ooops - now I've jinxed myself - I'll probably get a cold now. NO I WON'T, she said, thinking positively. My car is running well (it ought to be, with the fortune I keep spending on it!). Only just enough money and not enough to save - in other words, situation normal.

What have I been buying? A set of new cordless phones which I have yet to set up properly, and a lovely flame-effect heater for my fireplace space. Makes you warm just looking at it, and it does a pretty good job of heating the room, too.

My folk club is on tonight. The performers are "Just a TAD and Moz". They are from the Blue Mountains, where it is colder than Sydney, and are very good. One of them, Tom, is a Spooky Man. I just hope this weather doesn't keep my audience away!

I keep thinking of that poem that goes "I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in." I tend to not think about the creaky bits when I'm enjoying myself, although I find myself more and more often preferring a quiet weekend at home to anything else. I must be turning into an old fart. At least most of the time, I'm a happy one.

We are all doing pretty well. My constant companion, during the week, Morgan my 3.5 year old grandson:-), and I had a tea party today. We used my miniature tea set from when I was a very young child. It is a blue and white pattern from Japan. The cups are so tiny...they must hold about 30cc of tea and the teapot probably holds about four swallows. I heated about three cups of water and kept pouring it in the teapot. We used all of it! I didn't have any little cakes, so on the teeny plates we had carob-coated raisins. Morgan was so cute. He poured the tea and kept slurping and saying "yum-yum" and telling me how much fun it was. We sat there for at least an hour just having fun, drinking tea and talking. A few hours later he was asking for another tea party. It was such a special time for us. I love him so much.

Just had a baby boy! Life is pretty good on that front. He's cute, got lots of photos to send to family and friends. Went to spend the afternoon with the new Grandparents yesterday and photo albums came out to embarrass Daddy. Harry is the spitting image of Paul. It was wonderful to see the old baby photos!!

My brother got into the Royal Marines the other week. The family isn't too pleased about it but we're supporting him because it's what he wants to do. We just hope that he keeps safe.

Learnt a few more songs, been singing to Harry, Daddy has been singing to Harry too!!

I'm looking forward to my family coming to visit in July and am already getting things organised for that. Much too early, but the excitement level is way up there right now!

In between there's Old Songs and Kendall's operation next week, so a fair amount of travelling going on.

Life is good - a daily visit to the beach with Seamus and good friends to go to the Thrift shops with. Trips out in Genevieve with Kendall. Lots of crochet projects to be getting on with - afghans for my wonderful grandson and step-grandchild, due in September, shawls, cell phone holders........

Thanks in part to mudcat advice I got my mother's Apple stocks from 1977. It was four times the amount I was first told.

I first found them 10 years ago when I responded to spam regarding unclaimed funds. Overall spam has been vedy vedy gud to me.

I'm adjusting well to dialysis, which is driving the social worker at the dialysis center crazy, because her job relies on people like me not adjusting. She doesn't understand that the job I was forced to retire from was getting to be too much for me to handle, and I'm making more on dissability than I was at the job.

Steve - some social workers find it difficult to understand that sometimes they are not needed. Mudcat company excepted, of course!

Donuel - I'm glad that you got those shares sorted out - Mudcat can be a real asset sometimes, can't it.

Well, thanks for asking,Kim, I haven't been around for a while, either, and it's great to catch up.

I'm still doing my market stall "Bron's Crafts & Curios" on Welshpool market on Saturdays and mondays, and I run a Flea ans Craft Market once a month at the same place.Saturday afternoons, when it goes quiet, we clear the place by doing a few tunes and inviting local musicians to join us. Asmall start, but it will grow.

We're rehearsing for bits of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" for a picnic in the woods on 23rd June, kids games, storytelling, music, of course, and the rude mechanicals doing their stuff.

The diabetes is pretty well under control, the garden isn't, and I've never been happier, or tireder.

Cheers, Bron.

Congratulations Liz. Well done!

I must admit I've had a downright slothful weekend on account of the weather. The camping and session weekend was called off on account of one of the worst storms in history around here. The Hunter area which we were going to was declared a natural disaster. The Central Coast and Sydney and the Illawarra also received a buffeting from this storm, 9 people died, there was widespread flooding, roads closed, power cuts, trees down, a wharf at Cremorne in Sydney sank, a huge tanker ran aground at Newcastle, beaches were eroded, and there was massive damage to buildings.

Fortunately we watched all this from the comfort of the lounge room. With wind and rain lashing all around us, we decided the best thing to do was to lay low. So we spent all weekend in a nice warm house, watching episodes of Dr Who on UK TV, or the latest news and weather, or the Lifestyle Channel, or on the computer. John did more than I did - he drew a lot of characters for a pirate poem he has written to entertain children.

We ventured outside briefly on Saturday afternoon to drive down the road and see how high the Cooks River had got, and watch thousands of seagulls helping themselves to worms and things that must have come up for air on the flooded golf course. We are high and dry on a hill here, so the only damage we had was that the tarps we had over the BBQ area are in shreds and there is a mess of ropes and poles and things all over the ground.

Even the tender plants in the no-dig garden which had the protective plastic ripped off them seem to be okay. I cleaned up a bit today and partly unpacked the car (probably having another go at camping in about 3 weeks) Yes, I feel quite relaxed!

I've had ups and downs this week. Had some friends from Vermont here for a long weekend and we had a wonderful time, as always. I don't see them nearly enough.

On a sad note, there was a story here on Monday about an elderly woman struck and killed while crossing the street in the city I grew up in. I found out today that it was one of my favorite teachers from high school, Mrs. Paxon, whom I had the pleasure of having as a substitute for 1/2 year in German class. She was a hell of a woman! Hearing her name today brought back some fun memories but I feel terrible about the way her life ended.

My family comes to stay for two weeks on the 19th and then it looks as if we have stuff happening for most of August.

I have a toothache. I've had it for nearly 2 weeks now...

I'm on penicillin for it, but the pain gets unbearable at times. It's in a tooth that was filled about 6 months ago... oddly enough, I had no trouble with it until it was filled.

I'm down for a root canal on Tuesday, but if the infection hasn't cleared, it could be another week. Application of ibuprofen, paracetamol and ice packs is not helping but it's amusing my work colleagues, watching me clutch bottles of frozen water to my face.

I'm not a happy bunny.

Well, I'm having to put up with vicious rumours that have NO truth in them whatsoever from someone who should really know better and people that can't help but stick their noses in business that does not concern them in anyway shape or form....but such is life.

Other than that things are pretty good. My son is growing well and we saw his first smile the other week, and no it wasn't wind, although he gets plenty of that!

I've lost over a stone in weight and it's still dropping off, I feel fantastic! I've been enjoying walking and have recently managed 10 miles which is a wonderful achievement, mind you Harry is good company on the walks and gurgles away merrily in his pram!

We had some good news as far as my partner's father is concerned this week.

My brother is getting set to go into the marines in a few weeks time and after speaking with him I know it is something he really wants to do and I am supporting his decision 100%, but I'll continue to send energy to keep him safe when he is posted.

Thanks for asking...Doing pretty good. I had an excellent smoke the other day. Dunhill Nightcap in a beautiful rusticated Cavicchi billiard that was given to me by one of my pen friends whose doctor forbade him to smoke any more. He has serious health issues, including an inoperable brain tumor. I think of him and quietly wish him well each time I smoke it. And I am thankful that I don't have a fraction of his health issues. The bowl lasted a blissful hour and 20 minutes while I watched The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and then some MSNBC news.

Two weeks ago, I got a cute, sporty little Miata convertible, and I can't get this shit-eating grin off'n my face. The wife and I had a nice inauguration ceremony with for it. Poured a little champagne--OK then, sparkling wine--on the hood, and sat in the car (not moving) with the top down and drank the rest of it and talked/dreamed about doing Route 66 next Summer.

And my neck and shoulder are feeling much better since I started physical therapy and doing the assigned exercises more regularly.

Other'n the wars, pestilence, global warming, and the boobs still in the White House, I am feeling pretty good.

Liz, I had a toothache experience similiar to yours a few years ago. I had heard that cinnamon oil (from the pharmacy, not the smelly candle store) would help deaden the pain. Desperate, I decided to try it late on a Saturday night to perhaps make it through til my Monday-morning dentist appt. I'm guilty of the mindset of "If a little works well, alot will work better". Went all over my tongue and for some hours all I could say, when TomCat (chuckling) asked me how I was feeling, was "Wthath thoo joo thlink, dthon'th thalk thoo mwe anythmore."
You have my sympathy, dear.
Doing ok except that we've had no real rain for 4 months now. Very worried about fires. My family reunion is coming up next week and I'm dreading all the remarks from the elderly aunts about the pounds I've put on in the 3 years since I saw them last. Oh well.

Housecat - I'll get Kendall to do a rain dance for you dear - hope it comes soon. Enjoy the reunion and just tell the aunts you're better value now.

We had a great time at the picking party but not a lot of sleep and one very hungover husband this morning.

Jacqui - I think gnu's referring to Kendall's alcohol consumption. heh heh

Well, my day started with a missing earring - my favorite one. Big Surprise! So I tore the house apart and found nothing. It seems that one of the kitties pinged it out of the little dish I kept them in and now it's gone walkies. So I grabbed a yardstick to see if it was under the refrigerator or stove. That led to Part II of the saga. I thought the refrigerator coils were on the back and always meant to pull it out and vacuum...they're not. So the next hour involved removing a blanket of cat hair from under the fridge. I found multiple cat toys, champagne corks, straws, etc. but no earring. And of course as soon as my aged knees hit the floor the phone rang and I had to abandon the search temporarily. Getting down is worse than getting up.

In comparison to the leaky roof, falling tree, broken fence and wet basement complete with washing machine fire, this is nothing but it is the uppermost in my mind at the moment. Wonder if anyone would notice if I wore two mismatched earrings?

Good news? A Bar-B-Que on the Fourth of July complete with sparklers. And July 17th is Baby Fred's sixth birthday. Alice and I will celebrate with Temptations and champagne.

Life is good.

And it's only 11 weeks and 4 days until we go to Canada to see our wandering son, and meet his lovely Canadian girlfriend for the first time, and meet our little black grandcat.

Cheers
JennieG

Kendall doesn't know his own strength. That burn on his arm is from a lightening bolt which came with the rain.

I have a job interview today. Good thoughts, please, that I can make a decent living at it and that it be interesting enough for me to stick with it.

Hope it works out well, SINS. Good thoughts your way.
Off to my family reunion today. Lucky me, an unwed thirtysomething cousin has, to quote one of the elderly aunties, "Gotten HERSELF pregnant, and she's HAPPY about it.". (The TomCat is anxious to inquire as to how a woman might get HERSELF pregnant, he's been laboring under the delusion that some sperm was needed from some source. He gives the aunties the devil at every turn.) This should provide a nice distraction away from the subject of my excess poundage, and I think Cousin will make a lovely Mommy.

It's nice to see someone caring to ask how people are.

This comes to mind.

Around the corner I have a friend,

In this great city that has no end,

Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,

And before I know it, a year is gone.

And I never see my old friends face,

For life is a swift and terrible race,

He knows I like him just as well,

As in the days when I rang his bell.

And he rang mine but we were younger then,

And now we are busy, older men.

Tired of playing a foolish game,

Tired of trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on Jim,

Just to show that I'm thinking of him."

But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,

And distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner, yet miles away,

"Here's a telegram sir," "Jim died today."

And that's what we get and deserve in the end.

Around the corner, a vanished friend.

Remember to always say what you mean.

If you love someone, tell them.

Don't be afraid to express yourself.

Reach out and tell someone what they mean to you.

Because when you decide that it is the right time it might

be too late.

Seize the day. Never have regrets.

And most importantly, stay close to your friends

and family, for they have helped

make you the person that you are today.

The toothache is better, apart from a twinge or two which (hopefully) will settle down, after the root canal treatment this morning. The sky is an incredible variety of shades fo grey, there's a fantastic thunderhead moving in from the west and you can almost see the cloud swelling with rain.

Wish it would piss off to Kendall's house. He needs it.

I hope the tooth gets better fast.

Clove oil didn't touch this one - the root has been "killed" now so it's just got to settle down and then have the permanent filling put in. I know it's already better, my glasses aren't crooked!

"Got herself pregnant" maybe she's a Newt?

That was a common saying back home. It always makes me chuckle.
They also used to say "They took him out and got him drunk".

I always wondered about that.... thought that maybe there was a way of doing it that was a) less messy and b) less fun but did involve turkey basters.

Fifteen comebacks and I daren't use a one!

Well, I start tomorrow night at the Mutual Window at the local trotting track. In September, a Senior Teller position opens and I will be training for it.

Drawbacks? I can neither bet nor drink on the job. Go figure.

Should be fun, at least.

Hey Liz, I had a tooth infection in April, antibiotics for a week, root canal treatment in May, tooth out in June!! Would have been easier to have it out back in April and would have cost less. Alright, I've got a gap where an upper pre-molar used to be, but it certainly is a lot less painful these days!! Still, I hope your treatment works better than mine did and you keep the tooth. We should be like sheep - they grow their teeth back and never have to visit the dentist.

Human teeth are a compelling argument against the idea of "intelligent design". If we humans were "designed" by some intelligent deity, why do we have such crappy teeth?

We were fine last week but Sunday night my dog got into the garbage and chewed up a rancid turkey carcass, and now she's in the hospital with the worst case of pancreatitis the vet has ever seen, bacterial gastroenteritis, peritonitis, and had surgery this afternoon to remove a foreign body. It looked like a turkey bone sliver on the x-ray but it turned out to be an old piece of wire, ingested a long time ago, that had worked its way through her stomach lining and into her abdominal cavity. Not the cause of the current problems but probably an aggravator. Her pancreas and peritoneum looked so bad that the vet took biopsies to be screened for cancer (our first dog, unrelated but of the same breed, developed cancer at the same age. Diamond's about thirteen), just in case.

She is one sick little dog. I went by to visit her once she was awake and she was medically OK (well, as OK as she was going to be, considering) but looked as though she wished she were anywhere but here. The vet seems to think she'll come out OK but we're pretty damned worried about her.

Poor little doggie! Hope her recovery ges well and quickly, Scoville. We do suffer right along with our pets when they're ill, don't we?

As for me, I'm going crazy from going nowhere fast! I have an audition coming up on Sunday, for a 15-minute singer/songwriter showcase slot at the Bethlehem (Pennsylvania) Musikfest. Doesn't sound like much to the world at large, I guess, but it's got some prestige locally. There are 14 acts in all, competing for 4 of these showcases, and I'm up against some stiff competition.

What's driving me crazy (or rather, who's driving me crazy) are the side men accompanying me at this audition, a dobro player and a blues harmonica player. None of the three of us are pros, just friends who like to play music together, but I'm having trouble getting them together to rehearse! When we do, I have trouble getting them to relax and enjoy the songs -- they're too nervous about their performance to let the music flow out of them. I have confidence that they can do it, so I hope they gain confidence in themselves over the next few days!

Whatever happens, the 14 auditions are going to make for a great show on Sunday. But any good thoughts that anyone would care to aim toward my side men and me would be much appreciated!!
